1
On the Waterfront 1954,  Unrated)
On the Waterfront
The perfect movie. Perfect cast, directing, writing and score. Flawless.
2
The Godfather 1972,  R)
The Godfather
The gold standard. All others are imitators.
3
Diner 1982,  R)
Diner
One of the greatest films about male friendship ever made. Barry Levinson's best.
4
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World 1963,  G)
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Arguably the greatest cast of comedic actors ever assembled. Stanley Kramer's masterful allegory about greed is long but somehow not too long. Phil Silvers is a genius and Jonathan Winters destroying the gas station maybe the funniest scene ever filmed.
5
Blue Velvet 1986,  R)
Blue Velvet
Weird, unique, funny, creepy and brilliant. David Lynch's masterpiece.
6
Stardust Memories 1980,  PG)
Stardust Memories
It's one of the Woody Allen films that somehow manages to get overlooked. It's one of his most personal and my favorite. (Yes, Annie Hall and Manhattan are brilliant too.)
7
All That Jazz 1979,  R)
All That Jazz
Like Stardust Memories, this film is Bob Fosse's most personal. It's breathtaking and brilliant. Roy Scheider is stunning. And it's got Ben Vereen, so what more do you need?
8
A Serious Man 2009,  R)
A Serious Man
Probably my 2nd favorite Coen Brothers movie of all time, behind Fargo. (Honorable mention goes to Barton Fink, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing and O' Brother.) It is an absolutely talmudic tale of a search for answers, both tangible and spiritual. Stuhlbarg is brilliant and the ending blew my mind. I kept sitting there saying "Wow" to myself.
