The Train 1965,  Unrated)
The Train
An absolute must for any train lover. This story of the French Resistance doing their all to prevent the Germans from shipping their priceless artworks back to Germany has an appeal that eclipses many other war movies.
2
Runaway Train 1985,  R)
Runaway Train
The feeling of cold steel against the arctic cold makes you feel so cold, you could watch this in front of a heater and still feel like freezing to death. This is a thoroughly brutal film in both the scenery and its theme.
3
Oh, Mr. Porter! 1937,  Unrated)
Oh, Mr. Porter!
One of the funniest movies from the Thirties. The slapstick is still easy to appreciate and it's another good opportunity to laugh at the Irish.

Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb 1964,  PG)
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
One of the best movies ever. You've really got to see it several times to appreciate multitude of remarks, names, locations and even the shadow of the B17 bomber against the photo of the B52 bomber in flight. The climax with Slim Pickens riding the bomb down yelling "Yahoo" is a hoot.

The Bedford Incident 1965,  Unrated)
The Bedford Incident
Between Fail Safe, Dr Strangelove or this one, it's hard to pick the best nuclear holocaust film. With the first two, you know that this is always on the cards but with this one, what starts out as a relentless chase of a Soviet submarine by an obsessed captain with a tired crew, it ends in one of the junior officers mistaking a statement as an order. This has very unexpected and totally horrendous consequences for the submarine, the ship and the rest of the world. A very good movie, particularly as much of it was done in Britain.

Flight of the Phoenix 2004,  PG-13)
Flight of the Phoenix
Not as good as the original but just as watchable. You can see that much of this movie was done with CGI whereas the original was done with a real plane.
75
The Flight of the Phoenix 1965,  Unrated)
The Flight of the Phoenix
If you want suspense, just wait until James Stewart tries to start the engine. Enough said about that. A terrific movie that doesn't pull punches about surviving while lost in the desert with no hope of being found or rescued by a search party. I could watch it over and over
76
Flight of the Navigator 1986,  PG)
Flight of the Navigator
A must see for kids. A bit dated but the message and the humour ensures that it stays at their level

Malta Story
A good movie based on fact. Very enjoyable to watch. The entry of the SS Ohio into Valetta harbour was all actual film footage and protrayed very well the conditions under which the Maltese lived during the war

This movie is still pleasing to watch and the the dialogue between Jack Lemmon and Joe E Brown at the very end is hysterical to watch.

Silver Streak
Train movies are always enjoyable and this one is no exception. It does however follows a standard format, ie; man hops on train, meets girl, meets fat man, gets into trouble over girl, gets put off train, gets back on train, rescues girl, kills the bad guy then the train crashes spectacularly. It works for me though

The Cruel Sea 1953,  Unrated)
The Cruel Sea
A movie that I can watch again and again. Stark and realistic without the "Hollywood" propaganda type add ons. This movie shows the effect war can have on people both in their professional lives and personal lives. Also brilliantly protrayed is the cost each has to pay to take part in something they didn't even have a part in making happen. A must see for anyone who's had it too good for too long.

The Ship That Died Of Shame 1955,  Unrated)
The Ship That Died Of Shame
A very watchable movie about a wartime torpedo boat having given exemplary service during the war being rescued from the scrapyard by its former commanding officer and executive officer. Beginning by running bootleg alcohol and nylons, the pair begin to use the boat for more seemingly lucrative but noticeably darker jobs and the boat begins to give them trouble. After the boat is used to transport a child murder away from justice, the boat seemingly gives up and eventually smashes itself onto rocks, destroying itself. Another good Moserrat story made into an equally good movie.
