Great film that will appeal to vast majority on many levels. Socially conscience, well acted and just plain likeable. Great date movie, just the right amount of cool and endearing

Sense and Sensibility
A good book made into a good film. Kate Winslet is a vision and to think a Taiwanese Lee Ang directed it!
8
Caveman 1981,  PG)
Caveman
Ringo Star as a caveman. What a concept! Shelly Long is goofy and cute. Barbara Bach is Va va va voom! Love the giant omelette scene.
9
Kung Pow! Enter the Fist 2002,  PG-13)
Kung Pow! Enter the Fist
Slapstick, silly and totally hilarious. 70's Hong Kong kung fu film spliced with an american actor, voice overs, a one boob chickand a fighting cow.
10
American Beauty 1999,  R)
American Beauty
An american film that feels decidedly unamerican. Sam Medes does a stellar job of uncovering the filth that harbours under the facade of the american average family. Dark and wonderful.
11
Empire Records 1995,  PG-13)
Empire Records
The coolest record store in the universe. Lots of budding talent in the form of Liv, Renee, Robin and Ethan. Killer soundtrack that defined my 90's teenage years.
12
L.A. Confidential 1997,  R)
L.A. Confidential
This film is so smart, so taut, so gorgeously filmed and with such a terrific cast that I still can't belief it actually was made! Cast is perfect all round. This is film noir of the highest degree.
13
Beautiful Thing 1996,  R)
Beautiful Thing
Sweet film destined to be missed or forgotten. Coming of age film with tricky questions. The ball busting mother is a real treat and the internal struggle of young love is a crowd pleaser.
14
Heavenly Creatures 1994,  R)
Heavenly Creatures
Once again Kate is a marvel. This girl can do no wrong. Her debut film and a very good one by Peter Jackson it is too. Adolesence and killer tendencies are a dangerous mix
15
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) 2001,  R)
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
Everyones' favourite foreign film, and rightly so. Heart warming and quirky with a pixie face lead actress. The most beautiful greens and reds can be found in this film's images. Without a doubt the prettiest film I've seen in awhile.
16
Shaun of the Dead 2004,  R)
Shaun of the Dead
Well technically not a zombie film as the people are infected with a virus and are not dead. Whatever the case its damn funny!
17
Fright Night 1985,  R)
Fright Night
Scared the crap out of me when i was a little kiddie but was funny too. made me giggle nervously till the next scare while watching behind pillow.
18
Y Tu Mamá También 2001,  R)
Y Tu Mamá También
Sexy show if somewhat slow moving. The ending no one saw coming and made me go huh?! Still well acted and interesting enough to hold an audience.
19
Amores Perros 2000,  R)
Amores Perros
A three part movie about the lives of random strangers. Good style of filming and gritty street smart, urban feel to it.
20
Speed 1994,  R)
Speed
The action film du jour! Clever, well scripted characters and extras and action packed from start to finish. It never lets up the adrenaline. Dennis Hopper is great as the villian. Made Keanu and Sandra into household names worldwide.
21
In the Name of the Father 1993,  R)
In the Name of the Father
Serious film about the Belfast Four pub bombing. Daniel Day Lewis is once again pitch perfect as wrongly imprisoned man accused of crime he didn't commit. Great Sinead O'Conner song titled "You Made Me the Thief of Your Heart" used in the film's ending. First film I've ever watched in secondary school to make me feel like an adult due to the emotions and thoughts it provoked while leaving the cinema.
22
Shrek 2001,  PG)
Shrek
The first in a new wave of cartoons to usher in the idea that its not just for kids. I laughed till i cried when Fiona sang till the bird exploded to steal its eggs. Totally didn't see that coming but much appreciated wit and smarts applied to kiddie medium, that made smart kids and adult love fairytales again.
23
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot) 2002,  R)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot)
First in a trilogy of ultra violent korean stylised films. I'm treating this entry as a nod to Old Boy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance too. Director Park brought a new respect and more importantly reached new audiences with this film.
24
Ringu (Ring) 1998,  Unrated)
Ringu (Ring)
The first and easily the best in a new era of asian horror cinema. The lack of sound in scary parts made the whole film even more terrifying as one never knows what to expect. Even now, I still have to say one of the scariest films of all time.
25
The Sound of Music 1965,  G)
The Sound of Music
A classic that no one can say doesn't have the feel good factor. Julie Andrews is perfect and the 7 children are adorable. If i didn't like it so much I'd totally diss it!
26
Kill Bill: Volume 1 2003,  R)
Kill Bill: Volume 1
Stylish film with enough substance to make it work all round. Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu are stand outs in an excellent cast. No one beats Tarantino in his own self created genre.
27
Pulp Fiction 1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
Here Tarantino creates his own genre of film. A melting pot of action, drama, noir, comedy and parody. A wake up call to all cookie cutter hollywood films. Killer soundtrack works with the film so well its scary.
28
Dangerous Liaisons 1988,  R)
Dangerous Liaisons
Terrific cast led by the great Glenn Close makes this the period film of the 80's. Deception never looked or sounded so posh. Had such a cool ending with a socially destroyed Close wiping her makeup off.
29
Baby Boom 1987,  PG)
Baby Boom
Diane Keaton is smart and ditzy in equal parts in this greed is good 80's comedy. Of course she goes on to play this type of role a dozen or more times but hey its still a pleasure to watch.
30
Bridget Jones's Diary 2001,  R)
Bridget Jones's Diary
The ultimate chick book gets turn into the ultimate chick film. Renee pulls of the accent and nuances of being english perfectly. Hugh is smarmy to the point of vomiting and casting Mr Darcy (Colin Firth) as Mark Darcy was nothing short of genius. A great supporting cast adds this film greatly too. All round crowd pleaser.
31
Crash 2005,  R)
Crash
Angry film that finds its own logic and redemption. Clever interweaving of characters and it seems like half of hollywood is in it! A film that had something to say and said it well.
32
Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)
Pan's Labyrinth
Great imagery and fatastical landscapes makes this film a mind boggling journey. Visually stunning and at times very violent. A film that has to be seen cause its so hard to put into words.
33
Kal Ho Naa Ho 2003,  Unrated)
Kal Ho Naa Ho
Funny, cute and ultimately touching. never watch this one without tissues. Three leads have wonderful chemistry. With this film, Bollywood proved it could give tintsle town a run for its money in the rom com dept. The music for the movie deserves mention for its melody.
34
Ju Dou 1990,  PG-13)
Ju Dou
Gong Li's breakout performance that led her to become an international star. A quiet film that required nothing but great acting which it delievers.
35
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2001,  PG)
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
Another Hindi film that has all the right elements to make it a classic. Funny, moving and entertaining. All the big players of Bollywood are present in this movie. A great film to intoduce to newcomers of Indian film.
36
Zatôichi (The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi) 2003,  R)
Zatôichi (The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi)
Best dance sequence in any samurai movie! Never thought I'd say that in the same sentence. Seeing is understanding what i mean.
37
Hero 2002,  PG-13)
Hero
Visually stunning with clever use of colours to portray loyalties and emotions. The usual highly entertaining acrobatics are on full display here but its the acting that wows.
38
Ba wang bie ji (Farewell My Concubine) 1993,  R)
Ba wang bie ji (Farewell My Concubine)
Set against the Chineses cultural revolution and social uncertainties, its a story of 3 friends and the paths they choose which leads them to rather tragic ends. Gong Li and Leslie Chueng give outstanding performances.
39
The Lives of Others 2006,  R)
40
The Others 2001,  PG-13)
The Others
The film that made me realise I actually liked Nicole Kidman. She steals the show in this film. Totally controlled and beautifully nuanced acting. The twist in the end can rivial Sixth Sense's. Rare horror film that relies on acting instead of screaming.
41
Babettes Gćstebud (Babette's Feast) 1987,  G)
Babettes Gćstebud (Babette's Feast)
Slow moving and I realise not to everyone's taste. That said, a worthwhile movie with its own sense of calmness and beauty. Mysterious stranger takes up job of parish cook and later spends all her lottery winnings on a lavish feast for the town's folk.
42
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt) 1998,  R)
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt)
Hyper and kenetic sort of movie with alot of varients on what could have happened scenarios. Exciting and adrenaline pumping. You end up rooting for Lola to beat the clock and save her boyfriend.
43
Eat Drink Man Woman (Yin shi nan nu) 1994,  Unrated)
Eat Drink Man Woman (Yin shi nan nu)
Three sisters and a father who happens to be a cook that has lost his sense of taste. A family struggling to stay united and probably the best usage of food in any film. Not only does it look good but it actually helps tell the story of the generation gap between father and daughters. Lee Ang's most touching film to me.
44
A Place in the Sun 1951,  Unrated)
45
Romy and Michele's High School Reunion 1997,  R)
Romy and Michele's High School Reunion
Total fluff of a movie but fun nonetheless. Two best friends pretend to be something they are not to impress their high school classmates at their 10th year reunion. Its predictable and hokey but there are quite a few gems jokewise. Watch it if you're feeling silly.
46
The Story of Adele H (L'Histoire d'Adčle H.) 1975,  PG)
The Story of Adele H (L'Histoire d'Adčle H.)
Serious story of Victor Hugo's obsessive and overly high strung daughter. Isabel Ajani is spectacularly beautiful, she's a marvel acting wise too. Probably need to be in the right mood to watch this one.
47
The Fifth Element 1997,  PG-13)
The Fifth Element
Sci fi film that has all the right elements. Good dose of comedy, stunning visuals and costumes, more action in its first half hour than in most action films totalled. But what really impresses is its not mindless action. Good storyline and believable acting with great direction saves it from being just good and makes it great entertainment.
48
What's Eating Gilbert Grape 1993,  PG-13)
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Quiet gem of a movie. So well casted that you forget they are actors sometimes. Leonardo, Johnny and Juliette give great performances. Rarely does hollywood produce films like this but boy do i wish they did it more often. Heartwarming but not hokey, Simple score aides its flow as a movie.
49
Hard Candy 2005,  R)
Hard Candy
Like opening a whole can of worms. Raw, uncensored and in your face. Made every single male wince and cross their legs in the audience. Great acting from two leads. Gritty film that says something without getting preachy on you.
50
Tsotsi (Thug) 2005,  R)
51
Átame! (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!) 1990,  NC-17)
Átame! (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!)
What can I say, I love this film. Almodovar does his magic with Banderas and April. I realise its the quirkiness that i like about Predro's films. This ones a great starter for the uninitiated.
52
All About My Mother (Todo Sobre Mi Madre) 1999,  R)
53
Audition (Ôdishon) 1999,  R)
54
Chungking Express 1994,  PG-13)
Chungking Express
Wong Kar Wai finds his mojo with this film. Super stylish without being fake. Gorgeous cast and good soundtrack makes this film the hippest film of its time. Controlled acting and good script makes it a great film even without the hype.
55
Fallen Angels 1995,  Unrated)
56
Untamed Heart 1993,  PG-13)
Untamed Heart
I hated the film even before i saw it. Once i actually saw it, I was nicely surprised. Intimate film that touches the heart. Its about how normal everyday people find love and sometimes lose love. Three leads does this sweet film justice.
57
The Constant Gardener 2005,  R)
The Constant Gardener
Hard hitting film that asks uncomfortable questions. Yet for all its bite, its essentially a love story. Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz are luminous as the leads. Easily the smartest film of 2005. Wins hands down for cinematography and script too.
58
At First Sight 1999,  PG-13)
59
Match Point 2005,  R)
60
The Wings of the Dove 1997,  R)
The Wings of the Dove
Has all the prerequisites of a period piece, beautiful sets and costumes, good adapted script and nice direction. However it is its three leads that steals the show with its brittle and cunning plot. Tragic and sad but you can't shake the feeling that they kinda asked for it. Still a very beautiful film with Helena Bonham Carter doing a very fine job.
61
Labyrinth 1986,  PG)
62
Pleasantville 1998,  PG-13)
Pleasantville
Smart movie that kinda disguises itself as fluff to 'make the medicine go down'. Very socially aware without bordering on preachy too much. Great cast helps pulls attention from the fact that its plot is basically two teens being sucked into a black and white tv show. Use of Fiona Apples's version of 'Across the Universe' is nothing short of perfect. Joan Allen, Tobey McGuire, William H Macy, Jeff Deniels and Reese Witherspoon are spot on with their roles.
63
Election 1999,  R)
64
Swept From The Sea 1998,  PG-13)
65
Evil (Ondskan) 2006,  G)
Evil (Ondskan)
Great Swedish film with tension so taut at times, you'll find it hard to breath. A new boy at school becomes the centre of hate and envy with his ability to be the best at everything. He habours a dark past though.... Well worth a watch.
66
Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso) 1988,  R)
67

The funniest of the trilogy. This film always brings back good memories. Exciting and hilariously silly at times makes this a great popcorn flick.
