1
The Killing Fields 1984,  R)
The Killing Fields
My favourite movie of all time - heart wrenching drama made with real intelligence. Best movie music as well by Mike Oldfield
2
Monty Python's Life of Brian 1979,  R)
Monty Python's Life of Brian
Consistently funny throughout which raises it above the other Monty Pythons. Stunning script, faultlessly executed. Overflowing with quotable lines.
3
Requiem for a Dream 2000,  R)
Requiem for a Dream
Ever wanted to do drugs ? You wont after watching this. Searing portrayal of how drugs can come to own your sole. The only film I've seen where fast editing is used effectively. Ellen Burstyn is simply astonishing. Every aspect of the film is perfect.
4
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back 1980,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
The best of the original trilogy forming the heart of the saga. My sentimental childhood favourite.
5
Hunger 2008,  R)
Hunger
Faultless masterpiece which blew me away. Film of the year. Harrowing, profoundly moving window on the extremes men will go to for their beliefs. From the breathless opening through the much vaunted central stand off, McQueen never puts a foot wrong and brings a mesmeric pace and artist's eye. I could gush all day ........ you must see it.
6
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Michael Gondry's best film with excellent performances from all involved. This takes a fantastical approach to the tribulations of romance but ends up nailing the pain and confusion which often results. A grown up film about relationships - hoorah !
7
Aliens 1986,  R)
Aliens
Best film of the sci-fi horror genre to date.
8
The Shining 1980,  R)
The Shining
My top horror film and probably Kubrick's best work. Nicholson is in his element as he descends into madness.
9
Seven (Se7en) 1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
Chilling and utterly convincing - easily Brad Pitt's best performance
10
Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
Supremely intelligent dissection of modern man's malaise. Brimming with interesting ideas delivered by a cast on top form.
11
Kinsey 2004,  R)
Kinsey
Intelligent biopic which cleverly captures the crusade of one scientist to bring some rationality into the world of sex. Liam Neeson is stunning as the driven protagonist but is matched scene for scene by the ever reliable Laura Linney. Illustrates better than any film I've seen the struggle of scientific rationale to overcome societal superstition and suspicion.
12
Magnolia 1999,  R)
Magnolia
Epic character study which deftly intertwines stories of love and loss - easily Tom Cruise's best performance
13
The Grifters 1990,  R)

Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys) 1995,  R)
22
Dancer in the Dark 2000,  R)
23
Children of Men 2006,  R)
Children of Men
A chilling and all too plausible vision of the future with stunning set design. The long takes allow you to orientate yourself in the environments so you really feel there - no flashy jump cutting to spoil the action, the plague of modern action cinema where you can't work out who's doing what to who. I loved the gritty grey tones used to highlight the future's shortcomings. The future tech was also very well integrated without being obtrusive. Best sci-fi film I've seen in a long time.
24
Team America - World Police 2004,  R)
Team America - World Police
Funniest film of the year - well done to americans for spoofing yourself with no mercy !
25
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan 2006,  R)
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Goes way out there to force you to challenge your prejudices. You will laugh consistently and then wonder if you should have. Brave and thought provoking.
26
Ed Wood 1994,  R)
Ed Wood
Beautifully observed piece with real affection for the oddball characters involved. Johnny Depp plays Ed with a wonderful deluded enthusiasm.
27
The Nightmare Before Christmas 1993,  PG)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Best stop motion animation feature by far. Great pace, sense of humour and unusally for this type of movie, songs that work.
28
Léon (The Professional) 1994,  R)
Léon (The Professional)
Luc Besson's masterpiece
29
Nikita (La Femme Nikita) 1990,  R)
Nikita (La Femme Nikita)
Classic super stylish Luc Besson thriller which is a gripping and wonderfully acted in all the ways its shoddy US remake fails
30
Insomnia 2002,  R)
Insomnia
Al Pacino in imperious form as a washed up detective, ably supported by Robin Williams and Hilary Swank. A seemingly hackneyed plot is enlivened by a sharp script and convincing acting. Reminds me of Silence of the Lambs in quality and execution.
31
The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
Antony Hopkin's performance gets all the attention but around him Demme has crafted a gripping tale

The Thing 1982,  R)

Don't Look Now
An unsettling classic which instills a sense of unease and sustains it till the unexpected climax
40
American Beauty 1999,  R)
41
Raising Arizona 1987,  PG-13)
42
Pleasantville 1998,  PG-13)
43
South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut 1999,  R)
South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
Big screen outing delivers consistent barbs and laughs. Funny songs superbly executed.
44
Akira 1988,  R)
Akira
The movie which opened my eyes to Manga and sets the bar for all that followed. Becomes a little incomprehensible towards the end but just sit back and enjoy the ride with astonishing animation (for its day), stunning music and more inventiveness than a summer of blockbusters !
45
Carlito's Way 1993,  R)
Carlito's Way
Pacino and Penn make for an explosive combination in DePalma's best film since 'Blowout'.
46
Lilya 4-Ever (Lilja 4-ever) 2002,  R)
Lilya 4-Ever (Lilja 4-ever)
Devastating but thoroughly gripping
47
Glengarry Glen Ross 1992,  R)

The Remains of the Day 1993,  PG)

51
The Sweet Hereafter 1997,  R)
The Sweet Hereafter
Atom Egoyan's best film
52
The Big Lebowski 1998,  R)
The Big Lebowski
Infused with a screwball energy like no other, this scatological fable says little but has great fun doing it.
53
Finding Neverland 2004,  PG)
Finding Neverland
Beautifully composed tale of JM Barrie and his inspiration for Peter Pan which explores death from a child's perspective with a stand out performance from Freddy Highmore. Depp and Winslet are as dependable as ever. A magical family film not afraid to tackle some big issues - rare indeed.
54
Lost Highway 1997,  R)
Lost Highway
My favorite Lynch movie.
55
The King of Comedy 1983,  PG)
The King of Comedy
Squirm inducing satire on the distorted world of fame and those who seek it. Skewers the forced civility celebrities must present to their public and ably illustrates the old adage, ' no publicity is bad publicity'.
56
A History of Violence 2005,  R)
A History of Violence
Cronenberg comes of age with a mature treatise on the impulse for and effect of violence. A stellar cast led by a brooding Mortensen and emotive Bello carry off the tricky central revelation convincingly. The context justifies the extreme violence on show.
