Requiem for a Dream 2000,  R)
Requiem for a Dream

Elsa y Fred 2005,  PG)
Elsa y Fred
The cutest film ever! I had never felt such a jumble of feelings between sadness and happiness, in some time I found myself getting ready to cry with some tears in my eyes and smiling at the same time, just breathtaking and heartbreaking.

The story about true love is memorable and life changing... China Zorrilla is impressive, inspiring and touching: what an actress.

To sum up, the best way to describe the plot is a Picasso's quote printed on the movie poster as a tag line: "It takes a long time to become young" (I'm not sure about the translation from the spanish). Definitively one of my favorites, I do recommend this movie to everybody, you'll never forget it and...

Lovely story which teaches you how to enjoy the life in the simplest way, even when you feel the biggest (but most stupid at the end) problems over you. The conception of the simplicity about love and happiness is priceless in this movie, it's a perfect guide to realize how we complicate our lives unnecessarily, when we have so much to see and learn from the people who surround us, the simplest things that we see every day of our routine, forgetting in the process wishes, dreams and, of course, actions can make a huge difference in the way we live... As I said before, just priceless and wonderful.

Technically, as well as the plot and the whole conception, is perfect... I love the special effects on this kind of films, just made to understand what Amelie and the characters are going through and not to impress you with useless explosions or trashy stuff like that. This movie is really a must.

WALL-E 2008,  G)
WALL-E
Simplemente impresionante.

Make a comment for this film is quite easy... This one will change your life, as simple as that.

A Clockwork Orange

It's a funny movie but also has a lot of dramatic moments on a well done script full of memorably quotes and unforgettable characters, making the movie very interesting and entertaining.

Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies)
You have to see this film and it's amazing without a doubts, but if you only are looking for two hours for cry, it´s not for you. By far is the saddest movie that I've ever seen, and I cried like a little baby, but don't go to see it expecting to cry, this is the worst thing that you can do, as same as go to see a horror movie expecting that it's going to scare you to death, it's not going to happen and you won't enjoy it, just see it and try to get involved with the characters, and for sure you'll see yourself immobilized, overwhelmed and why not crying. It's a excelent and different way to see the war through cartoons, but you won't realize thar the war is bad... that is obvious for everybody.

The camera management is awesome, the story is a little bit complicated but very simple at the same time... put this together with the black and white filming effect , and you will get this great film which easily can drive you crazy.

Awesome flick, this one shows perfectly how the drama movies should be filmed, as well as Memento, the order of the scenes confuse you but at the same time keep your mind busy and make you don't want to blink (and you shouldn't!)

The Unbearable Lightness of Being 1988,  R)
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Just marvelous. For some people it may be slow, but this film has everything you can imagine; its political debate is tremendously interesting and remarkable, but in the next scene your are laughing because some stupid line or acting. This is itself amazing, but when you blend this with a superb love story between four tremendously dissimilar persons (well the love with the animals is incorporated too), including therefore all the paradoxes that the love is able to give you, the result is this exceptional piece that you should see at least once.

I can't picture the beauty and splendor of the Milan Kundera's book, I can't wait to read it.

Battle Royale 3D 2001,  Unrated)
Battle Royale 3D
Asombrosa!

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
This is the type of SciFi which is great to see: is almost impossible to get bored watching this film, the story is magical and it will give you a whole redefinition of what relationships are, their inevitable link with the past and the human behavior when it comes to love... very original.

On the other hand, it keeps your mind busy all the time and, ironically, you have to have a good memory to enjoy it in a full way, but if you don't, it would be great watch it over and over again, I'm pretty sure that you'll find something different every time, excellent for those who loves trying to discover continuity goofs in the development of this plot, which offers a great package of feelings in just less than 2 hours...

Surprising cast, even when I didn't like completely both the Elijah Wood and Kirsten Dunst parts in the story, but they are "necessary" though.

Run Lola Run (Lola rennt) 1998,  R)
23
The Lives of Others 2006,  R)
The Lives of Others
Outstanding film based on amazing performances (in special the brilliant Ulrich Mühe as Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler), since the plot is usual and predictable, but this is the best cast I recently can remember, that characteristic indifference of the Germans combined with a variety of sensations and emotional conflicts is just awesome. Great work, and I am so glad of the different approaches that the German directors are taken to show the well known socialist stereotypes among other issues, it's a shame that this film is incredibly underrated, so few people is interested in going to see it.

In conclusion, a brilliant and terrifying sample of a system and its human side, with flaws, decisions, tears, fears and why not some happy times.

Special movie for special people, very intelligent and there you'll see love in the most strange, bizarre, common, beautiful, imaginable and unimaginable way, all of them condensed in creative and wonderful short-stories created by the best directors... You can't ask for anything else.

Magnifique et intéressant, but, once again, just made for special people, otherwise, it'll become extremely boring! ;)

P.D.: If I have to choose my favorite short-story I pick "Faubourg Saint-Denis" directed and written by Tom Tykwer: just awesome, flawless and beautiful; all executed and thought perfectly.

Finally an universal movie which recaptures the magic from the classic movies, with an awesome management of the colors and the silence on a beautiful story for kids and adults from all the countries and cultures.

Definitively this film is one of kind among the movies made in the 21st century.

The Asians are geniuses for this genre, but before to watch it, be sure to develop properly your concentration skills, and if you have to see it two or three times, do it, you'll enjoy every time and new details will be discovered for sure. Bluff
Unlikely and very silly story, just like the most of the Latin American "soups", but it's as unlikely as funny, and I think that it's a parody of this typical and awful TV shows; just because of that and to step aside from the usual Columbian movies about poverty, drugs and war, this is probably the best movie from my beautiful country in the past 4 or 5 years (Just like "Al final del Espectro")... It's hilarious but in a very Latin American way, so I'm not sure about its succeed abroad, but locally you definitively have to see it, maybe you will like it or not, but seen it is a very good way to support our cinema industry as well as to spend a rainy evening in Bogotá.

Go for Zucker! (Alles auf Zucker!)
Very refreshing, clever and entertaining; it makes a pretty good try defying the well known German stereotypes with the jew community, in the most laughable way possible. Even when it is not as good as "Good bye Lennin", I had been waiting for a movie like this from Germany since then.

Waltz with Bashir
Awesome and powerful. Making a documentary out of animated images instead of the "real thing" and real interviews, might sound like a mistake... Well, Folman shows us that you can mixed a little bit of both, ensuring your attention throughout the film and finishing off perfectly just in case that the spectator had not believed in the animated format.

It's very nice to find a film of this kind, different from WWII or Vietnam stories, (which, by the way, are awful as well) but sometimes it feels like we have seen it all (not true off course)... This changes our view of war in a very "recent" way, since the Israeli conflict is still current, leaving hundreds of deaths every year, most of them children with no participation whatsoever.

Totally worth it.

Inglourious Basterds 2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
Usually, I'm always think twice before I go to watch a movie about WWII (Nazis), Vietnam, etc. because out there's a lot of great flicks which literally diminish any new attempt to film some story about them. However, I've had a few surprises recently so I've decided to give to most of them a shot, especially when a genius like Tarantino tries.

¿The result? Black humor everywhere and an entertaining script executed beautifully. I enjoyed so much, particularly the Christoph Waltz's performance, every time he was out of camera, I was looking forward for the next appearance: just extraordinary.

The movie format has the Tarantino signature written all over, following, principally, what he did in Kill Bill: Volume 1, except for the industrial quantities of blood, so it's inevitable to chuckle when you often identify the obvious resemblance.

Totally worth it, and one of the best movies in a year extremely poor in good productions. Unbelievable, but after all this years, Tarantino and Pitt, do again an excellent job. Amazing.

This is something really special. I'm becoming a graphic novels fan and, most importantly, their movie adaptations. The plot is amazing and blends magisterially some of politic history (even though you at the end realize that it isn't the main purpose) with a strong personal story.

It probably may offend some people, specially those whom are really "attached" to the Islam culture (don't want to use the word fundamentalist), but if you really "read between the lines" the film is simpler than a decisive debate over government regimes. And that is because Mariane Satrapi does a wonderful job, not just adapting the graphic novel she wrote, but telling her own story and the details in which it developed.

The animation is flawless: I love its simplicity and the old-fashioned way they did it, but still keeping it perfect, always trying to avoid an over "cartoonish " look.

Definitively a must for those looking for a movie that approaches in a balanced way, politics, religion, culture, costumes and a touching humanist tale, told in an unique and neutral form.
