A film by the dramatic G.W. Griffith that was so massive in 1920 - though now it is all but forgotton. Gish plays a young naive country girl who gets herself in a right mess with a dodgy philanderer. The print currently available is like many classic silent movies - crying out for restoration. The DVD available displays awful scratches and emulsion damage.

Chaplin's first big movie after years of shorts. Well judged humourous characterisations overplay the obvious sentimentality throughout the film. Hard to believe this innocent child actor would become the macabre 'Uncle Fester' from the 'Adams Family' television series in the 1960's!

The first really effective vampire film. The look of Count Orlok obviously influencing the look of 'Mr Barlow' from Tope Hooper's 1979 television movie 'Salem's Lot'. The film has atmosphere in bucket loads. German silent cinema was unbeatable at this time, rivalling early Hollywood in it's production and cinematic themes. The production of the film was fictionally tributed in 2000 by 'Shadow of the Vampire' starring Willem Dafoe as Orlok and John Malkovich as director, F.W. Murnau.

Went the Day Well?
A shockingly realistic, though obviously propaganda-driven British film from 1942. Made during the middle of the Second World War, by an Italian director, the idylic 'jolly hockeysticks' vision of the home counties in England during wartime is given a shake-up as Nazis infiltrate an English villiage. It's up to the villagers to fight off the hun before the army arrive, and as the film progresses many characters that you grow to know get picked off in the most gratuitous manner by the invaders. Obviously meant to frighten the British public into being alert around others, it must have actually terrified them, as not much British cinema from this era has ever shown such brutality onscreen.

Excellent portrayal of the shift to sound films in Hollywood at the end of the 1920's. Great songs, and though Gene Kelly was a hard taskmaster, the pure dedication he had to this picture shines through.

A film for the fan boys. A visual homage to all that was good in old Hollywood using CGI. The observant will notice many Flash Gordon serial and original King Kong references, aswell as those to Capra's 'Lost Horizon'. There's also homages to more recent films such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the animated modern classic 'The Iron Giant'.

Pan's Labyrinth
Del Torro's beautifully made film that balances fantasy with harsh realism. The CGI doesn't dominate the story, with each character and plotline being given time to develop around the stunning visuals. Ivana Baquero as the child Ofelia, steals the movie with her touching, innocent portrayal of a little girl emotionally isolated in the Spanish hills of 1944. Sergi López as General Vidal plays menace at the right level without ever becoming a pantomime villian. A fantasy movie that is definately not for children.
