Hedwig and the Angry Inch 2001,  R)
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
This film has fantastic music, mesmerizing performances, and transcendent thoughts about self-discovery, love, and wholeness.
2
Summer Stock 1950,  Unrated)
Summer Stock
There are some films that you just love in spite of their shortcomings. In this film the mediocre plot and middle-of-the-road filler songs are more than made up for by the talented cast, the chemistry between Gene Kelly and Judy Garland, and two legendary music/dance sequences. I love this film unapologetically.
3
Millions 2004,  PG)
Millions
This movie creates a magical world that perfectly fits the character whose imagination has created it. This film is a modern fairy tale that I will definitely be sharing with others.
4
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) 2001,  R)
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
One of the defining films of our DIY generation, proving the merits of imagination and whimsy.
5
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 2007,  R)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
I cannot boil down a review of this film to a few sentences. I've seen it four or five times now, think it's a great example of adapting a theater piece into a movie, must be watched (you can't just get the soundtrack to understand the performances), and is well worth watching -- especially if you get the Angela Lansbury/George Hearn DVD and 4 or so different album recordings of Sondheim's musical masterpiece.
6
Enchanted 2007,  PG)
Enchanted
The perfect antidote to too much irony, sarcasm, and cynicism. Manages to both lampoon and love Disney's princesses. Gives Susan Sarandon crappy puns, but lovingly references nearly all of Disney's classic animated films.
7
Spirited Away 2001,  PG)
Spirited Away
Alice in Wonderland with more heart and a cultural twist.
8
Hipsters 2011,  Unrated)
9
Company 2008,  Unrated)
Company
This musical is a thorough and honest exploration of relationships. This staging is especially exquisite. That the actors are also the musicians only deepens how they relate to each other and intertwine more than verbally.
10
MirrorMask 2005,  PG)

Holes 2003,  PG)
12
Hero 2002,  PG-13)
13
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert 1994,  R)
14
Penelope 2006,  PG)
