There are some films that you just love in spite of their shortcomings. In this film the mediocre plot and middle-of-the-road filler songs are more than made up for by the talented cast, the chemistry between Gene Kelly and Judy Garland, and two legendary music/dance sequences. I love this film unapologetically. |

I cannot boil down a review of this film to a few sentences. I've seen it four or five times now, think it's a great example of adapting a theater piece into a movie, must be watched (you can't just get the soundtrack to understand the performances), and is well worth watching -- especially if you get the Angela Lansbury/George Hearn DVD and 4 or so different album recordings of Sondheim's musical masterpiece. |
