Cidade de Deus (City of God)
Amazing. This film is not about violence of criminals. This is a cultural 'based upon a true story' type thing about life in Brazilian favelas. I think this is the only Brazilian film I've seen / even heard of!
5
Italian for Beginners ,  R)

Last Life in the Universe 2003,  R)
Last Life in the Universe
An amazingly inspirational movie about a suicidal Japanese, fastidious, librarian, man's strange love affair with a messy Thai prostitute. Very funny, if the plot sounds a bit random please don't be worried it DOES make sense and isn't hard to follow / understand. This is the only Thai film i've ever seen but on this basis I'd love to see more.

Y Tu Mamá También 2001,  R)
Y Tu Mamá También
Do I like this for the movie or the memories that come with it...? This proves that 2 guys and a girl just can't work! Honestly this is a GREAT if slightly over-sexed coming of age movie. A good bittersweet twist at the end as well. One to watch more than once.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot) 2002,  R)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot)
The bleakest movie I have ever seen in my life! I love it! Chan Wook Park is a genius. I really want to see his Lady Vengeance film.
9
Spirited Away 2001,  PG)
Spirited Away
Hayao Miyazaki films are a joy to watch. This one is basically Alice in Japanese Wonderland. Bizarre, fun and inspiring!
10
Donnie Darko 2001,  R)
Donnie Darko
Strange thing to say about a movie but the 1st thing that really impresses me about this is the AMAZING soundtrack and use of 80's music. A film of OUR generation (if you have a Donnie Darko poster on your wall you are tres cool!). You have to watch this film.
