Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) 1981,  PG)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark)
My all-time favorite movie. Every shot and line is iconic. After thirty years, it's still complete perfection.
2
Rear Window 1954,  PG)
Rear Window
Hitchcock's best is one of the most imitated films ever made. The staging, suspense sequences, and performances are nothing less than brilliant.
3
Edward Scissorhands 1990,  PG-13)
Edward Scissorhands
The first Burton/Depp collaboration is also probably the best. Everything in it is so strange and out-of-left field, yet it also manages to be very funny and moving. It feels like a very personal project for Burton (its the most 'pure Burton' of all his films) and remains Depp's best performance.
4
The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
A good thriller turned into a masterpiece by the superb scenes featuring both Foster and Hopkins. Unforgettable.
5
Moulin Rouge! 2001,  PG-13)
Moulin Rouge!
It's truly bizarre, but it has a way of eventually pulling you into the story. Filled with manic musical numbers, there's been nothing quite like this before or since.
6
Pulp Fiction 1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
It's propelled along by these absorbing little conversations, with each story just as engrossing as the last. The best work by nearly everyone involved.
7
The Shining 1980,  R)
The Shining
It's too long and lacks Jack's character development from the book. Yet, it's genuinely unnerving and masterfully directed. A textbook example of effective horror.
8
Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1974,  PG)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Is there a movie more quotable? It ends with a fizzle, but until that point, it's one quirky, out-of-left-field gag after another.
9
Alien 1979,  R)
Alien
A stylish and suspenseful horror film. The dinner table scene is classic.
10
American Beauty 1999,  R)
American Beauty
Stands out as a true original against the other recent Best Picture winners.
