Ocean's Eleven is probably one of the best light-hearted films I've ever seen about a robbery. The characters of the film are perfect and carefully designed to portray an array of unlikely personalities. And they band together to pull off one of the greatest jobs of all times- robbing the vault of the Bellagio.
George Clooney plays the infamous Daniel Ocean, the idea man of the crew. Ocean is a charming, witty, and absolutely lovable character. Brad Pitt, who plays Rusty Ryan, Ocean's right-hand man who puts the job into action is hilarious and always eating in the film... Matt Damon plays the rookie, and is son of a legendary thief. Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia) is a robot in the fashion he runs his life and hotels. The perfect antagonist. The brothers Virgil and Turk Malloy, played by Affleck and Caan respectively, add a slap-stick humour to the film. They are immature and hilarious, but are the ideal duo to assist in pulling off the job.
Overall, Ocean's Elven is a terrific film. It has wonderful characters and an unbelievable cast, great setting and atmosphere in Las Vegas, and is 100% pure entertainment. This is a definite must see!!
The Devil Wears Prada- Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci. (02/10/07)
A phenomenal film with an equally phenomenal cast! This is easily one of the best films I've seen this year. It is wonderfully written, and talentedly cast. A story about a young, smart, and ambitious college graduate Andrea Sachs (Hathaway) who comes to New York hoping to pursue a career in journalism. So she becomes the personal assistant to the ruthless and cynical fashion editor, Miranda Priestly (Streep) at the prestigious Runway magazine, where after a year she will be able to write for any newspaper. But what Sachs does not know is her own lack of fashion sense and knowledge of the fashion world makes her stick out like a sore thumb.
This is The job that "all girls would Die for."
First assistant Emily (Blunt) and photo shoot designer Nigel (Tucci) are Priestly's loyal followers. Both making Andrea's life a living hell, until eventually befriending them. Nigel changes her wardrobe and style; and eventually Sachs entire personality is altered. Now entering the world of fashion of free designer clothing and glamorous parties and people, and living it up. Eventually she begins to disregard her friends and boyfriend all for her job. She takes a phenomenal job with Priestly to Paris, where she discovers the ugly world of fashion and how people are stomped over. And Andrea must decide what she wants.
Anne Hathaway, in sort of another Princess Diaries style-like transformation is wonderful yet again. Going from geeky style-less college grad, to chic, fashionable and egotistic. Meryl Streep puts on by far the best performance as the cynical and ruthless "villain" Miranda Priestly, and I absolutely loved her. Stanley Tucci is hilarious, and utterly hilarious. Those one-liner insults are fabulous. But Emily Blunt truly surprised me, with her snobbish character Emily who literally worships Priestly giving up her life for her job.
This is a Fantastic film that is witty humoured and terrifically cast. The Devil Wears Prada is pure excellence and entertainment, and I recommend that it been rented and seen!! (But I noticed that there was only one Prada bag in the entire film.)
A film about a rivalry between two magicians, Jackman and Bale, to the best and most original. This movie keeps the audience guessing and on their toes. It captures the curiosity of human nature, and keeps one emotionally hooked until the very end. The plot is fantastic, and the ending/prestige was vicariously shocking, and twisted. Definitely a movie to see.
This film was sweet and charming and Ryan Gosling was put on an unbelievable performance. He gained so much respect from me after this film, (because he used to be in that teen series which was absolutely dreadful). Rachel McAdams was great too, and they made such a lovely on screen couple. The ending's the part of the film that really gets to you.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl is one of my favourite films and by far the best of the Pirates trilogy. (I felt obliged to rewrite my review after seeing all three films.) It's one hundred percent pure entertainment, there is not a moment in the film where the audience loses interest. The cast is Amazing (Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Jack Davenport), and it's chalked full of witty humour. One may be skeptical about seeing a film about squash-buckling skally-wags, but do not be deterred by the stereotype.
The film is absolutely unbelievable. I have seen it more than several times myself, and I was equally thrilled to see it each time. The plot is phenomenal and very original. The crew of a pirate ship commits mutiny, abandons their captain, steals and plunders hundreds of pieces of Aztec tresure, only to find out it's been cursed. And like most films nowadays, there is a brewing romance.
Johnny Depp who portrays Jack Sparrow Captain of the Black Pearl is by far my favourite fictional character. And obviously this is my favourite performance by Depp. He is awkward, witty, reckless, and an absolute scoundrel, but totally lovable nonetheless. Geoffrey Rush is also amazing as Captain Barbossa, he's frightening, has that maniacal laughter and the perfect antagonist. Davenport, Knightley, and Bloom were also solid in portraying their characters, and the rest of the cast did a wonderful job as well.
The biggest contributor to the film being such a success besides the casting has to be the cinematography and costumes. It made the film seem more like a reality and blatantly, what it is. You have to see the extras on the dvds to appreciate the extents to which were taken in producing the film. All I can say is that Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl is exciting, original, humourous, and that I recommend it.
Four interlocking stories all connected by a single gun all converge at the end and reveal a complex and tragic story of the lives of humanity around the world and how we truly aren't all that different. In Morocco, a troubled married couple are on vacation trying to work out their differences. Meanwhile, a Moroccan herder buys a rifle for his sons so they can keep the jackals away from his herd. A girl in Japan dealing with rejection, the death of her mother, the emotional distance of her father, her own self-consciousness, and a disability among many other issues, deals with modern life in the enormous metropolis of Tokyo, Japan that is literally the size of the state of California. Then, on the opposite side of the world the married couple's Mexican nanny takes the couple's 2 children with her to her son's wedding in Mexico, only to come into trouble on the return trip. Combined, it provides a powerful story and an equally powerful looking glass into the lives of seemingly random people around the world and it shows just how connected we really are.
Ocean's Thirteen is a superb "comeback" from the previous installment, Ocean's Twelve. The film wanders back to the roots of the original Ocean's film; and is kept simple and in Las Vegas.
The plot and characters were solid, but the film started off a little slow. The new hotel that Banks (Pacino) builds in Las Vegas is phenomenal and modern. The con this time is to avenge Reuben (Gould) for being betrayed by Banks and suffering a near fatal heart attack. They devise a scheme to have Banks take a half million dollar loss, and steal his five priceless Royal Review Board's Five Diamond Award for which he has won for each of his hotels. But the gang requires financial assistance for this dangerous, and near impossible con, and in comes another "Ocean."
George Clooney who reprises his role as the infamous Daniel Ocean possessing a charming debonair, and is witty in humour. It's nice to see Clooney in a light-hearted film, instead of serious, political power films. Brad Pitt as Rusty is the same old also charming right-hand man. The chemistry and interaction between Clooney and Pitt in the movie is genuine and hilarious for they say things that only a "true" friend could say. Pacino who portrays Banks is a terrific villain, and truly acts and looks like a confident, pompous jackass. Andy Garcia also reprises his role as Terry Benedict in this third installment, and alters the gang's plans when he becomes an accomplice. Affleck and Caan are hilarious as ever, starting riots in Mexico for being underpaid and poor working conditions. And Ellen Barkin plays Pacinno's right-hand woman, and she still looks real good for 54!!
The cinematography of the film was beautifully done. The setting of which parts of the film were shot were stunning and truly was free advertisemtn for Vegas. The computer graphics were amazing as they created the unbelievable structure which is "The Bank."
Ocean's Thirteen is an entertaining, exciting, and witty humoured film. And although it is not as good as the first Ocean's installment, it is a film I would definitely still recommend. And similar to films such as X3 and At the World's End, there is the possibility of there being another Ocean's film.
Wow! All I can say is: Clint Eastwood has directed yet another masterpiece. The film is in Japanese so there are subtitles!
A WWII film about the battle at Iwo Jima from the Japanese perspective. I absolutely loved this film. It is a million times better than Flags of Our Fathers. Ken Watanabe (Last Samurai) put on another phenomenal performance. A film I would definitely recommend, and have to see again.
I bloody well loved this film. An inspiring, heart-warming tale of one woman's dream to succeed as a female boxer. Clint Eastwood directed and acted in it so I couldn't ask for much more. Hilary Swank had an amazing performance as the determined, hard-headed female boxer. A must see film!
A film packed full of big stars, and it did not disappoint. Sean Penn was phenomenal portraying a corrupted Southern politician. Definitely a film to keep.
I've seen it three times already, but it's still pretty good. It was creepier, but I think i still prefer the first one. The ending should've been done less of a cliff hanger because it's not a televisioin series but a major film production.
Half Nelson is absolutely phenomenal. One of the many many brilliant films that just fly under the radar.
Ryan Gosling put on yet an unbelievable performance in Half Nelson. It's a film about life, and friendship. Being a low-budget film, it was a cast of mostly new comers. This might make you skeptical, but do not assume. New commer, Shareeka Epps was just tremendous, just imagine all that undiscovered talent out there.
So get your butt out the door and down to your video rental store. Because this is a film you need to see!
The Sound of Music is a classic, and classics are timeless. I fell in love with this movie when I was five years old, and over a decade later I still adore it. It's so cheerful, witty, and full of catchy little songs and tunes. This had to be my absolute favourite Julie Andrews film.
Indiana Jones, what more is there to say about him. He's intelligent, good-looking, and saves the world, what more could one ask for? But seriously, it was extremely entertaining; humourous, witty, and exciting. Definitely a keeper, and I would suggest that you watch the entire trilogy of Indy adventures.
The Bourne Identity was a fantastic film. A man rescued from sea has no idea who he is, and people are constantly trying to kill him. The plot was well developed and the twists were what kept a viewer's eyes glued to the screen. Matt Damon is brilliant in the Bourne Identity.
A politically charged epic about the state of oil industry and those who it affects. Syriana may not sound like the most enticing and exciting film of all time, but the acting is amazing and the plot is spectacular. Although the story unfolds somewhat slowly, and it's one of those fantastic films that requires your undivided attention. Otherwise, you will have no bloody idea what's going on!
George Clooney puts on a surprisingly phenomenal performance, as CIA operative Bob Barnes (which is probably why we won an Academy Award).
This movie really surprised me in the best of ways, it is definitely a shame that another fantastic film like this one flies under the radar. You just need to see it.
Throughout the movie I was sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what happened next! Nicole Kidman was fantastic, and the twist at the end was definitely a surprise.
This film is absolutely amazing. It shows the contrast between the old and the new, and that anything dream is achievable. Sean Connery is his usual talented self, but new-comer Rob Brown as the black kid with the potential to be a phenomenal writer attends a private "wealthy" school on a scholarship. The film has it's moments of hardship, love, and laughter. This is a must see film.
Nicole Kidman and Jude Law had a great on screen chemistry. It is a tragic love story, where Inman (Law) is conscripted to war, while his lover Ada (Kidman) and her friend Ruby (Zellweger) fight to keep her land. Overall a very entertaining film, that I would watch again.
This is such an emotional, powerful film, which really tugs at your heart. The story about two close brothers conscripted to fight in the war. It's a heart-warming and heart-breaking tale. A must see film!!
I've seen the original 1988 Hairspray and I loved it, so when I heard there was a remake my expectations were high. And I was definitely not disappointed by the film as a whole. It was equally as witty and entertaining as the original.
Hairspray is a film about integration and standing up for what one's beliefs regardless of whether or not it is socially acceptable. Set in the 1960's in Baltimore, Tracy Turnblad is a short, plump girl, with big hair who's dream is to dance and join the cast of the popular teen show and win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin on The Corny Collins Show. Tracy is a character who tears down all stereotypes set by society and becomes a role model. Showing anyone can achieve their dreams and with perseverance comes accomplishment. One may say that detention, changed her life.
The cast of the film is spectacular with big names like Walken, Marsden, Travolta, and Pfeiffer. The most prominent, exciting. spectacular character is hands down, John Travolta, who portrays the bodacious, protective mother of Tracy. Christopher Walken is Mr. Turnblad and hilarious as well. The little dance scene between Walken and Travolta is unbelievable and the Best scene of the entire film. Amanda Bynes added to the comedic factor of the film as Penny Pingleton, and the "demon child" scene was quite hilarious as well. Michelle Pfeiffer is phenomenal as the antagonist/villain Velma Von Tussle. James Mardsen as Corny Collins is spectacular as well, looking very sharp and handsome and is one of the few characters who were portrayed better than in the original film. And Queen Latifah was grand and diva-esque as Motormouth Maybelle. This is a wonderful film for newcomer Nikki Blonski (Tracy Turnblad), she was a very lovable character.
A spectacularly hilarious and entertaining film that I suggest you see. Even if you're not a huge fan of musicals, Travolta's wonderful performance will definitely make you die laughing.
Michael Clayton- George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Sydney Pollack, Tom Wilkinson. Directed by Tony Girloy. (12/11/07)
A snazzy NY corporate law firm fixer Michael Clayton (Clooney) who is a former criminal prosector is sent to take care of a loose end. Arthur Edens (Wilkinson), one of the firm's a brilliant but guilt-ridden attorney tries to sabotage the company by distributing discriminating eveidence agsinst the firm. Clayton's biggest challenge to the date.
George Clooney was absolutely phenomenal in Michael Clayton. One of his very best performances to date. His performance commanded all the attention on the screen. What an amazing role, perfectly suited for Clooney. And I sense another Academy Nomination here!
Tom Wilkinson was unbeleivable as well. His performance was so raw, and believable. I was astounded. Tilda Swinton - Best Supporting Actress Nomination. I could go through and critique each cast member, but all you need to know is that the talented cast were all wonderful.
The only little negative thing I have to say is that the film progresses rather slowly, but it's absolutely intriguing. And the flashbacks at the beginning, were a little ocnfusing, but obviously if you keep watching the plot unfolds.
One of my favourite films so far this year, and I can confidently say it will be receiving several Academy Nominations for the phenomenal cast. If you have not already seen Michael Clayton, you're missing out. Get out and see it.
American Gangster- Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Chiwetel Ejiofor. Directed by: Ridley Scott. (08/11/07)
The true story about the life of drug lord, Frank Lucas (Washington). Had a touch life growing up in segregated North Carolina. Starting out as the driver and eventually becoming the predecessor of an infamous powerful coloured man in Jew Jersey. When his teacher mentor passes away, Frank takes over the reigns to become the most infamous drug dealer in history. Traveling directly to Asia's Golden Triangle to purchase pure cocaine, and importing it back into the US, where he sells "Blue Magic" which is twice as potent for half the price. Easily he becomes a millionaire, but also making many enemies due to his success.
In the meantime, cop Ritchie Roberts (Crowe) is working the case, to take down Frank Lucas and his organization. Ritchie is that cop, who finds a million unmarked dollars, and turns it in to the authorities, who end up swindling the cash for themselves. Honesty is his policy, or maybe he's just retarded like his partner and everything else thinks he is. In an environment of dirty cops, bought politicians etc it is nearly impossible for Roberts to touch Frank Lucas without inside help.
Frank Lucas is taken down by his greed when the Vietnam War ends, but cooperates with Roberts as an informer to take down his own kind. Over three quarters of the drug-enforcement officers are arrested and charged.
Director Ridley Scott is phenomenal. His classic style of film is wonderfully refreshing, because it puts more weight upon the cast's actually ability to perform. Hence, we expect to see nothing but the best, and that is what we are given in American Gangster.
Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe both give solid phenomenal performances for their portrayals of Frank Lucas and Ritchie Roberts, respectively. Strong, emotional, and believable. Denzel's performance is extremely intense, and his character makes you edgy and nervous.
All together, a very strong film with wonderful performances by the cast. Direction was terrific and it is easily one of the best films of 2007. I smell a couple of Academy nominations.
Ratatouille- (Voices) Patton Oswalt, Lou Romano, Ian Holm, Brad Garret.
Directed by Brad Bird. (17/11/07)
One of the best animated film this year by far.
Ratatouille is a film that matches the other animated masterpieces like the Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Shrek, and Cars. A very cute, humourous, light-hearted story with a moral lesson which is suitable for all ages.
A story about a rat names Remy (Oswalt) with a nose for the good things in life, food. He idolizes famous French chef Gusteau (Garret) and learns the secrets to cooking from his book "Anyone Can Cook." One day after receiving a terrible review from infamous food cridict Skinner (Holm) Gusteau passes away.
Gusteau's distraught son Linguini who lacks all sense in the kitchen is the heir to his father's enterprises. After getting sepearted from his family, Remy finds himself in the kitchen of Gusteau's restaurant, tempted by the immaculate kitchen. He begins to cook, in an anti-rodent environment. Linguini saves and befriends Remy. And the two pair up to become the ultimate chef.
Just a wonderful all around film, and if you haven't already seen Ratatouille, I highly recommend that you do.
