This movie is bold, honest, and true to life. The cast was just about perfect, and what damn fine acting everyone did. I also love that it is in black and white. The film was adapted from a semi-autobiographical novel, and I just looked up Larry McMurtry (who wrote the novel and co-wrote the screenplay) and just found out he also co-wrote the screenplay for Brokeback Mountain, hah, learn something new every day. Anyways, seems that with the team of Larry McMurty and Peter Bogdanovich that made for a stellar movie.
Just watched this amazing movie again. It means even more to me now than the first time I watched it, for one because my sister has been in a hospital for 3 years now. I don't remember what I got out of this movie after my first viewing, but after this viewing I got a great deal out of it. I saw the light of day. It was a rewarding experience. I get a similar feeling when I watch The Shawshank Redemption. "Get busy living, or Get busy dying", eh? Freedom is something most of us take for granted. Some of us don't even know how lucky we are to have our sanity, that is a freedom in itself, freedom from insanity. The brain is fragile and minor damage can change your life. The best moment of the movie is the final scene. It will always be one of my favorite moments of any movie. That scene lifts me up. No matter how big of a hole I may find myself in in my life I know I can always come back to this movie and wait for that final scene to help me out of it. It brings me to an even greater high than The Shawshank Redemption, if I were to make comparisons. I think it's time for me to read the novel.
Read the story. Rewatched the movie. Both are fantastic.
Andy Dufresne: That's the beauty of music. They can't get that from you... Haven't you ever felt that way about music? Red: I played a mean harmonica as a younger man. Lost interest in it though. Didn't make much sense in here. Andy Dufresne: Here's where it makes the most sense. You need it so you don't forget. Red: Forget? Andy Dufresne: Forget that... there are places in this world that aren't made out of stone. That there's something inside... that they can't get to, that they can't touch. That's yours. Red: What're you talking about? Andy Dufresne: Hope.
I Love It. If I had to choose one musical I'd be able to watch for the rest of my life.. and I wouldn't be able to watch any other.. I'd choose this one hands down. It's not even a musical, but it is, and that's what makes the music numbers so great.
"It's a strange world isn't it?" This movie is beautiful. The events that happen in the movie aren't "beautiful" but the movie as a whole is beautiful. I'm in love with the way this movie looks and sounds. The "bad" stuff that happens in this movie is in direct contrast with the beautiful parts of this movie. You want the robins to come. You have to go through a graveyard of dead robins to find any that are still alive. It's a lot like life. You want the love, but there is a lot of shit you have to go through to get to it. The great thing is Dennis Hopper is both haunting, scary, and HILARIOUS all at the same time. The cast in this film is perfect. It all works. This movie is strange and beautiful. I feel the same about most of David Lynch's movies. Strange and beautiful. That's why it's so great.
One of my favorite films. Repeated viewings are a must. Remember your first viewing and then wrap the other times you see it around the first time. Wonderful direction and writing. An imaginative take on love and losing it.
You haven't seen an ending of a movie until you've seen this one. If you haven't seen it you probably have no idea about some of these magnificent quotes that appear in this gem. You may have heard the phrases before, but they don't have any relevance until you see where they originated from. This movie is just so good. The ending makes the meal.
This is the newest addition to my favorite films list. It's a powerful film. It will forever be a powerful film, and I love it for that reason. It really hits me deep. The way only a great film/story can. It will stick with me. I know that much.
Just watched this for the third time. I think this is my new favorite movie of all time. From now on I'm going to say that it is. Just so that I can have one and get weird looks from people when I tell them.
I just watched this for the second time. It had a profound impact on me. You will not forget this movie. There is no explanation for what occurs in this film. If you want an explanation you will have to create one for yourself. If you have a clear definition of weird, this movie might alter that definition. Ultimately this film is about a man who ends up becoming a father, unknowingly. Then once the mutant deformed baby arrives...all hell is let loose. Nightmares mix into reality. Reality mix into nightmares. By the end you are left confused and unsettled. It leaves you wondering what it all means. All I can say is that the unclear answer is staring you in the face during the full runtime. It's there for you to decipher.
One of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. You just might cry by the ending, I can't think of another film that would have a better chance of filling your eyes with tears. I've seen nearly all of David Lynch's films and this is my favorite. I recommend this film whole heartedly.
Finally watched this film that I have been meaning to watch for the longest time. I watched this once a long time ago, I might have been 10...so let's say 10 years ago. I had no idea what exactly it was about. Now I certainly do know. It's full of visuals, sex, violence, and Beethoven. If you have any interest in those or brainwashing than this film will certainly float your boat. I love it that Bart Simpson dressed up as the main character in one of the Halloween episodes. Go look that episode up if you haven't seen it. : )
It's the Vietnam War in a nutshell. A powerful film with a great ending. The whole thing is like a poem of the Vietnam War's affects on small town people. All of the American soldiers that died over there, there must have been many different stories. It was a shitty "war" and shitty things happened. This movie sums that up in 3 hours time. The war and movie can be summed up from the quote we get from the first (returned) soldier we see in the film "Fuck It"
I finally made myself watch this. I'm so happy I did. :D It was very touching, and also a lot funnier than I thought it'd be. I am thankful Billy Bob Thornton made this into a film. I recommend it to every person out there. It's really worth watching.
This one is growing inside my head. If you wanted to see a writer's mind decay in fascinating form, than you have no doubt have to watch this film. If you have any interest in the Coen brothers this is an absolute must see.
Blew me away. Best Batman film/super hero film ever. I don't care how the 3rd one turns out at the moment because this one was fully satisfying. It will be interesting to see what they do with the 3rd one..sure..but this one will be hard to top. Batman Begins is child's play compared to this masterpiece...?...Yeah..masterpiece is close enough to how to describe this film.
Funny, Sad, Cynical, Buscemi, Music, this film has it all and a lot more. One of my favorite films and also a high recommendation. If you pass this film up, you pass up an absolute Gem.
So today I watched this for my third time. This kind of movie makes me calm and collective. It brings me to a point of happiness. For me...Amy Adams' performance is as real as real can get. She lights up the screen and makes me feel good inside. A bittersweet movie that brings northern city folk to the south and one man who revisits his family bringing back his new wife who is very different from his family. No one is in a hurry in this movie, it all comes with one easy flow. Tranquil, Genuine, Heartbreaking. This film has buried itself into my soul. It makes my thoughts organized and very easy to understand. Anything that can do that to me is worthy of my time. These movies make life more real for me, they let me understand more, they teach me, they make me more passionate, more responsive, more accurate, these types of movies are as real as films can get and that moves me. To appreciate this type of film you have to be able to realize that films like this that seem so real mean more than films that don't seem real. Bottom line through all the fog i'm spitting at you is this movie moves me.
Am I giving this one too high of a rating? It's a great film in my book..I might lower it's rating to a 4 1/2 but I think I'll watch it again and make that call.
One of the best of the series. Holds up well after all these years. The characters are real enough to like and the creepiness is always there. The ending I'm sure is a dream sequence in itself, but it does leave a question mark in the air. This one sets the bar for the sequels, two of those sequels come close if not topple the original for the title of best of the series.
A great zombie comedy. I haven't been this happy with a zombie comedy since The Return of The Living Dead, but honestly how many Zombie Comedies can you think of?
A brilliant maze of a film that may make you lost until you find the key to the exit. I've found that key. I watched this for the second time just now (the first time was many years ago) and (now) I know (and understand) what happened in this film and it was brilliant how David Lynch leads you to the end. I love movies that put the audience's mind to work.
This movie gets better every time I see it. Just watched it for the umpteenth time and I liked it even more than the last time I saw it. I guess I keep learning more about relationships and going through the different things and I can relate to this Rob Gordon in a good few ways. I also keep learning more and listening more to the music in the film, a lot of the time, not even realizing it was in the film. I have listened to Bruce Springsteen's The River in the past couple of years and I didn't remember it was in this, and that just made the movie even more enjoyable. This whole film is gold. There are so many quotable moments. I love the script.
I watched this once around 10 years ago and I don't think it made complete sense to me then, but I just watched it again today and it makes perfect sense now and it's an incredible movie. I just watched this again today and it's an incredible movie and I had watched it 10 years ago but I don't think I remember what I thought of it back then but it makes perfect sense to me now.
I love the soundtrack and Sandler in this film. I also love Emily Watson, and how can I forget Philip Seymour Hoffman's role either. Sandler needs to stick with serious roles, it shows he has a lot of passion for what he does.
"Gay Cowboys?" Slightly, but more like Bi.. maybe even confused cowboys.. but this film is really more than that. If you've seen it you know that it's more than "just" that. So what about the two leading ladies in this film? Are they gay cowboys too? No. They are not. This film is a story about people, and two of them happen to be sexually confused cowboys. How gay of a cowboy are you if you get married and have children with Michelle Williams? If you secretly have relations with a male (Jake) this can mean one thing. You are Butters' Dad (from South Park) or Heath Ledger's character in Brokeback Mountain. So this film features Heath Ledger in (probably) his second best role. I find this film more tragic now after the death of Heath Ledger. It's a really great film. With some great performances, nice cinematography, and oh what a score :) AND Anne Hathaway boobies TOO!, Oops! how did that slip in there. LOL Ummmm... So if you haven't seen this film because you are afraid of it or don't want to watch a movie that has been hailed as the "gay cowboy movie". You really should reconsider it. You don't have to be a homosexual male or a female to like this film. There is nothing wrong with liking a film about two cowboys having feelings for one another, and ESPECIALLY there is nothing wrong with liking a film when Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are the two cowboys *eye brow wiggle* lol Okay.. well maybe there could be something wrong with you then. You might want to talk to Butters' Dad about that. lol Okay but uhh nevermind about Butters' Dad... he won't help you, he can hardly help Butters! lol ANYWAYS ANYWAYS It's a great film and a great love story, and I recommend it.
After watching this film I had a dream about being chased around by the villian. After that dream I realized how much I wanted to watch the movie again. I love the Coen Brothers.
As a pair Episode IV and V are the best of the 6 hands down. And V is the best of the 6. Truely a wonderful film. If only I could say the same about the 2nd trilogy..but I never will..it is being SHUNNED from my life lol
This one is in need of a second viewing. The second time around a lot of things pop out at you. This one was really something great and it has a beautiful ending.
If you have heard any of Joy Division's music this is a must see. I wasn't a big fan of Joy Division..although I was unsure why. The only full album I had heard of theirs was Closer. I found myself listening to a lot more New Order. After watching this I found out I needed to get Unknown Pleasures immediatly. I downloaded the collector's edition from Itunes with a bunch of extra live tracks, now I'm hooked to their music. The film is a worthy biopic that takes a look at Ian and how he lost control of his life. It showcases some of their best work and really makes you interested..or it did me in like this at least. It's a tragic affair. I never knew tragedy could be such a beautiful thing...or well I guess I did..but this film reminded me that tragedy is all to real and life sometimes takes control of you and your actions. I learned a lot from the 2 hours.
One of my favorite films to watch in the middle of the night. A man gets himself into a night from hell and you won't believe what happens! hahahah. Lots of familiar faces pop up along the way, including the mother and then the father from Home Alone! xD..
How this made it's way on AFI's top 100 films and not Return of The King..I may never know..but still a wonderful film...Great Trilogy..I really enjoyed them..
It sure was epic. 3 Hours 26 Minutes. I didn't feel like sitting through it in one sitting so I watched it all over a week. In the future I am going to make myself sit through it all at once, I'm sure it has a bigger impact that way. What a great cast of characters. It's a great one.
This was my introduction to anime. I caught it when it came on the Sci-Fi channel in the late 90s. Today I can tell you it has a bit in common with the movie/book Dune. I was fascinated by it as a child. It was unlike anything I had watched up to that point in my life.
After I saw this I caught other anime films/series on the Sci-Fi channel including:
Galaxy Express 999 (and it's sequel) Tenchi Muyo! The Movie Record of Loddoss War Fatal Fury The Motion Picture Armitage Akira
Damn excellent film. One everybody should see. Put it on your list of must see films. I now know where Cartman's "Sucky Sucky, Five Dolla" thing came from. When he turned into a prostitute after falling off a bull?, or something. Yeah, now I know that's a Full Metal Jacket reference. Damn I love the first 1/3 of this movie. It's all excellent, but the boot camp part is superb. A major highlight. If you haven't seen this film, do so.
Damn. Quite sure I liked this part more than the first film. I know I enjoyed watching this one more. No Brando, but instead you got Robert De Niro as young Brando which more than makes up for it. The 3rd act was all kinds of whoa. I could talk about this one for a while. If you combined the two films together it would be a 6 hour masterpiece, but since it's in two parts we get 2 masterpieces. Haven't seen Part III yet. I do know from what I've heard about it.. it seems unneeded, after Part II I can't imagine what happened in Part III, but will watch it because I'm curious to see does happen. Anyways Part II was the icing on the cake.
Welp, this got under my skin like few horror movies can. I really enjoyed it. I was fully enthralled by the story. One of the most horrifying things in the movie I'd say was the face that would appear for a split second every now and then. Also when the faces warped, that also was super freaky. There is a lot more I could say about this. If anything it made me think a lot more about people with mental illnesses more than anything else.
No surprise here. I loved this. Love both the books and the movie. AND that just makes 3 Edgar Wright films that I absolutely love. He gets it Sooooo "w"right. HAH! Loved the soundtrack as well!
Jeepers. It was one continuous never ending thread of dialogue. I loved the score/soundtrack. Great performances. It was a bit much to take in, will be watching it again for sure, until then I leave this amount of stars if only because it was just that enthralling.
The inclusion of Totoro was a classic move. I was leaking raindrops by the end of this. I don't remember a movie giving me this much of an emotional response in a long time. One reason it got such a response out of me is because for the longest time I had feared growing up. This delivered closure very much like Return of the King delivered closure for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Close to the ending there gave me chills of deja vu from when I was young and watched The Brave Little Toaster.
I liked this a lot. I really like how they used the word "cuss" for all the "cussing" hahah! That was great. Love the style of filming/animation here. Great music too, like all other Wes Anderson films. I loved the opossum. My favorite part of the movie was the wolf scene. It was moving. This film was so cute and awesome.
Watched this for the second or third time tonight, then watched a documentary on the filming of the film which came with the 2 DVD set. The documentary makes me like this film just that much more. I think it was the fascinating crew, director, and actors talking about the film and the filming of it. Hearing about how the set was made, the scenes were shot, the funny stuff that happened during filming, all of that stuff really adds to the film itself. These people are as ordinary as they can be, and this documentary is just great. The movie itself is right up there with Night of the Living Dead. If you have any interest in film making or horror films I suggest you watch the film and the documentary(s).
Best Halloween film ever. It's twisted, hilarious, spooky, scary, and a hell of a good time. If you have any interest in Halloween you must see this ;)
Sucks you into the city and the world that now surrounds Robert De Niro's character. He was a marine, probably a Vietnam Vet, now he's got a job driving a taxi. Then the film all begins to set in motion. Scorsese is a man that knows his angles. Love the camera work. "You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Then who the hell else are you talkin' to? You talkin' to me? Well I'm the only one here. Who the fuck do you think you're talking to?" De Niro says this to either a mirror or the wall. This and the rest is just brilliant to the very end. The wonderful, wonderful ending :D
The creepiest PG movie ever. Freaked me out as a kid and if any movie can freak me out now this one has the best of chances. Also one of the creepiest things to do is watch documentaries about the film series. All about the weird things that happened while filming, the people who died, and Heath O'Rourke who died shortly after they filmed the third film. That just adds to the creepy factor of it all.
After a second watch I can say this is not only a great Christmas movie but a great Halloween movie. Already came to the conclusion it's a great horror movie. This movie is great to watch any time of the year.
(What I said before) Directed by the director of A Christmas Story. So he made an excellent Christmas horror/slasher flick 9 years before A Christmas Story? Awesome :) And the movie is excellent as well. One of the very first slasher flicks and Halloween and Friday the 13th and others took the killer's first person view from this film and used it in theirs as well. Interesting eh? Great movie.
*updated August 2010* It took me a few years, but I watched this again and it's still as great as when I watched it the first time, I probably even like it more now.
*original comment* One of the best romantic comedies ever.
