Star Trek 2009, PG-13)
The much-anticipated reboot of the 'Star Trek' franchise by TV wunderkind JJ Abrams doesn't disappoint. It includes plenty of kisses to long-time Trekkies while still bringing plenty of action and wonder for non-fans. While there's no replacing William Shatner's swagger, Chris Pine does admirably as James T Kirk, the headstrong and reckless cadet born to lead. Zachary Quinto not only looks just like Spock, but becomes the half-human, half-Vulcan first officer (and will make 'Heroes' fans forget all about Sylar). The most amazing performance comes from Karl Urban, best known as Eomer to 'Lord of the Rings' fans and from various action movies. Urban, as Dr Leonard 'Bones' McCoy, perfectly channels the late DeForest Kelley's irascible country doctor without coming off as a cheap imitation. |
