Almost Famous 2000,  R)
Almost Famous
Great music flick. Shows a new perspective on rock and roll. Performances are stellar and the soundtrack is very appropriate.
2
Blood Diamond 2006,  R)
Blood Diamond
Very moving picture with an important message. So you wanna say that they overdo the sentimentalism of the blood diamond crisis? Maybe so, but it is necessary to show the world a true evil. DiCaprio and Djimon have great performances. Slightly erratic in pacing, but not enough to affect the impact of the movie as a whole.
3
The Departed 2006,  R)
The Departed
Does "Infernal Affairs" well. Great performances and screenplay. The last 30 minutes are great with deception and violence (and f***) on hand. One of the best of 2006.
4
The Devil and Daniel Johnston 2005,  PG-13)
The Devil and Daniel Johnston
Most amazing documentary I've ever seen. It peers into the soul and creation of Daniel Johnston's music so creatively. The music is used well as the director tells his tragic story.
5
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Beautiful film, visually and emotionally. Jim Carrey is incredible, as well as Winslet. Gondry is so inventive and non-convential. Incredible filmmaking.
6

One of the most underrated thrillers I've seen. The pacing and thrills are definitely present, with great style and editing. Ending is great. Interesting concept on religion, in a way.

Zach Braff makes a real personal film that speaks to many in this generation. He is a voice that really influences others, including their music. Great indie soundtrack. Script is smart. Good performances by Braff, Portman, and Sarrsgaad.
8

High Fidelity
Smart romantic and hilarious. Cusack is perfectly cast and does a great job of carrying the clever script. Jack Black is again a genius of comedy.

Works with a great storyline, insane twists, and dashing cinematography. Top notch thriller.
11
Knocked Up 2007,  R)
Knocked Up
Hilarious with a deep, mature side as well. Apatow uses real situations to entertain the audience with smart (though sometimes risque) humor. Long, but worth it. *Now have seen it three times in theaters. Great in each screening.*
12
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004,  R)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Another quirky comedy with a great soundtrack, especially from Seu Jorge. Murray stands out once again. Effects are done in a very interesting way. Smart and touching.
13
Little Miss Sunshine 2006,  R)
Little Miss Sunshine
What makes this movie incredible for me is the rewatchability. The first time I watched it, a feeling of magic and tenderness surrounded me. And at each repeated viewing, this smart comedy replicates the same feeling. Incredible performances and message. Great picture.

18
The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
What is there to say about Shawshank? Robbins and Freeman give the performances of their careers. Amazing cinematography. The feel of the movie is great. Ending will pull on your heartstrings a little. Wonderful.
19
Signs 2002,  PG-13)
Signs
Greatest Shyamalan film, bar none. By keeping the action in a small setting (just one family rather than an entire country) he scares the living bejeezus out of me. Great pacing and acting.
20
Snakes on a Plane 2006,  R)
Snakes on a Plane
What a blast of a movie. So much fun to watch. If you go in looking for a movie you can just let your mind go in, it's perfect. Hilarious, exhilerating, Samuel L. Mother-f***ing Jackson.

There is so much more to this movie than meets the eye. The colors of wardrobe and scenery all coerce with the feeling of Truman. Carrey does an amazing job. Beautifully shot and scripted.
