Passchendaele 2008,  Unrated)
Passchendaele
Passchendaele is a gem! This movie was written, directed, produced and stars Paul Gross. It takes place in 1917 during the first World War. Paul Gross plays a Canadian soldier who falls in love with his nurse and takes responsibility when her younger brother enlists in the army. The battle scenes are excellent and unforgettable. Most war films have a love story and often find that they slow down the movie. I didn't feel that way in this case. This is the kind a movie that make a Canadian proud.

18
The Night of the Hunter 1955,  PG)
The Night of the Hunter
NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955) is one of my all-time favorite movies. It is the only film that Charles Laughton ever directed. Its cast is excellent and unforgettable. The cast includes Robert Mitchum, Lillian Gish, Shelley Winters and Peter Graves. Mitchum plays an evil "preacher" who has just been released from prison. He had shared a cell with Graves' character who has confessed that he has $10,000 hidden. Meanwhile, Graves is hanged for his crimes which leaves a door open to opportunity for the preacher to meet and weasle his way into the family and steal the money. Grave's children know where the money is but the oldest son doesn't like or trust the preacher especially when he marries the mother played by Shelley Winters. (By the way - Winters' death scene in the water is unforgettable). The children run away and are rescued by a kindly woman who takes in children of need played by the legendary Lillian Gish. I highly recommend this movie.
19
Bad Santa 2003,  R)
Bad Santa
BAD SANTA is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Billy Bob Thornton plays Willie, an alcoholic, washed-up safe cracker who every year works in a different mall playing Santa. His side-kick 'elf' played by Tony Cox (who by the way steals every scene he is in) is his partner in crime who tries to keep Willie in line (not always successful). Every year they work in a different mall, and when Christmas Eve comes around, they crack the safe and steal the cash from the department store's safe. Canadian Brett Kelly plays 'the kid' who is a sad 8-year old, who has no mother, his father is in prison and lives with his grandmother (played by Cloris Leachman) who loves to fix sandwiches. Willie figures someone (the mall's head of security, played by chain smoking, orange eating, played by the late Bernie Mac) is on to him, and stays with the kid and his grandmother. Watch for John Ritter (his last role in a feature film) as the straight laced head of the department store.

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World 1963,  G)
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" is probably my favorite comedy movie of all time. It was released in 1963 and no matter how many times I see this movie, I laugh so hard. Its got the greatest cast (Ethel Merman, Spencer Tracy, Phil Silvers, Buddy Hackett, and Mickey Rooney - just to name a few). The story line is pretty simple, a bunch of greedy people are on a road race to find a buried treasure (it's under a big W). Great movie.
24
New York Doll 2004,  PG-13)
New York Doll
This is the by far one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. This documentary is about Arthur 'Killer' Kane as he re-unites with his old band 'New York Dolls'. Kane was the bass player for the group. The ending is pretty surprising. Well done! A+++++++++Excellent!

I give "The Day The Earth Stood Still" five stars! This is a fantastic movie from 1951. Michael Rennie stars as an alien (who looks human) who lands on earth with his space ship and his robot Gort. He wants the people of earth to get along and have no more war, or he will have no choice but to destroy it. 46
Pale Rider 1985,  R)
Pale Rider
PALE RIDER (1985) is one of my favorite Clint Eastwood movies. Eastwood not only stars in Pale Rider, but he also produced and directed this film. It features a strong cast that includes Sydney Penny, Michael Moriaty and late Carrie Snodgress and the late Chris Penn. Eastwood plays a stranger in town only known as "Preacher". There is an on-going conflict between a group of poor, panning miners and the most powerful man in the nearby town who wants their land. Eastwood defends the miners. Pale Rider in many ways pays tribute to the classic western "Shane".

The Dead Zone 1983,  R)
The Dead Zone
THE DEAD ZONE was released in 1983 and is based on a Stephen King novel of the same name. Directed by Canadian film maker David Cronenberg, this movie though not entirely true to the book, is still a very very good movie. Christopher Walken is Johnny Smith, a teacher who is almost killed in a traffic accident, and wakes up from a coma after five years. As he heals, he discovers that he has the psychic abilities. I am not only a fan of this film and book, but also of the television series that this is based on. I have lost count of how many times I have seen this movie. It is definitely one I recommend.

The Queen 2006,  PG-13)
The Queen
Many of my friends had recommended that I see THE QUEEN. I finally had the chance to sit down and watch it, and was blown away. This movie tells the story of the relationship between the Queen and Tony Blair during 'unusual circumstances' - the tragic death of Princess Diana. Helen Mirren is so convincing as Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Michael Sheen was equally amazing as Prime Minister Tony Blair. I thought that the story line involving a beautiful stag was so symbollic of Diana and the Royal Family. I highly recommend this movie.
83
Some Like It Hot 1959,  Unrated)
Some Like It Hot
Some Like It Hot stars Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. This is a fun movie and I have seen it many times. Lemmon and Curtis play two musicians who have witnessed a mob hit and hide amongst an all girl band heading to Florida - dressed in drag. Joe E. Brown plays a memorable part of a millionaire who has the hots for Lemmon (who he thinks is a lady). Very funny.
84
The Frighteners 1996,  R)
The Frighteners
I love this movie. The Frighteners was released in 1996 and stars Michael J. Fox who plays Frank Bannister, who develops psychic abilities who can see, hear and communicate with ghosts. This happens after a tragic car accident that claims his wife, so he cashes in on his new abilities. When he discovers that an entity resembling the Grim Reaper is killing people, marking numbers on their foreheads beforehand, Frank tries to help those who are next to be 'reaped'. This film has a good story, good acting, some wonderful comedy, some scary moments and great special effects. I have to add that John Astin has a memorable part playing 'The Judge" - a hanging judge that has been dead for over a hundred years. I recommend this movie to those who love a good ghost story.
85
Waking Ned Devine 1998,  PG)
Waking Ned Devine
Waking Ned Devine (1998) was written and directed by Kirk Jones. The story is set in a small Irish town called Tullymore (population 52). Ian Bannen and David Kelly play best friends who find out that someone in their town has won the lottery. They discover that Ned Devine is the winner, but the problem is that he has died of shock holding the winning ticket. The jackpot totals almost 6.9 million Irish pounds. Together with the entire town, they launch a scheme to defraud the money by having David Kelly's character inpersonate Ned. But things get a lot more complicated when a representative from the Lottery Corporation comes to town to verify the winner and present Ned Devine with the winnings. This film is a favorite of mine. I especially love the Ian Bannen and David Kelly's performance as the best friends. I recommend this light hearted comedy. As its tagline says - "Finally, a comedy that will make you feel like a million bucks".
86
Bridge to Terabithia 2007,  PG)
Bridge to Terabithia
Bridge to Terabithia (2007) is a wonderful film for all ages. It stars Annasophia Robb, Josh Hutcherson and Robert Patrick. It tells the story of a lonely pre-teen boy whose life changes when a girl with a huge imagination moves next door. Together they create Terabithia, a magical place of trolls, monsters, giants, and ogres, and they are king and queen. This movie is based on a Newbery-winning novel and was filmed in New Zealand. The story is wonderful and the cast was excellent. A truly fantastic film which is now one of my favorites.

Little Miss Sunshine
Little Miss Sunshine is a great movie and consider it one of my favorite movies. I first saw this movie when it first came out in theatres. Now I watch it on tv, every chance I get. Anyone who wants a good laugh, should see this. Perfect performances by the entire cast. Alan Arkin won an Oscar for his performance as the grandfather which was well deserved. He was certainly a scene stealer!
88
Year of the Dog 2007,  PG)
Year of the Dog
I loved Year of the Dog. Molly Shannon plays a young woman with a nice house, a good job as a administrative assistant and a dog. When her beloved pet dies unexpectantly, her life changes. Having recently lost a well loved pet of my own, I could identify Molly Shannon's character. I recommend this movie especially to those who love animals.
89
How the Grinch Stole Christmas 1965,  Unrated)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1967) is one of my favorite Christmas movies. Boris Karloff, who narrates and provides the voice of the Grinch is excellent! I grew up watching this movie every year, and I never tire of it. I always look forward to seeing it. Shame on those who made a live version in 2000 with Jim Carrey!
90
The Blues Brothers 1980,  R)
The Blues Brothers
The Blues Brothers was released in 1980, and I have probably seen it at least a dozen times over the years. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd plays the brothers who just want to get their band together and help raise money for an orphanage run by the Penguin (that's what they call the head nun). There are so many cameos from so many great start (many who are still with us - Cab Calloway, James Brown, Ray Charles). Also, the music is great, the comedy is hilarious and just an overly movie that I consider a classic.
91
It's a Wonderful Life 1946,  G)
It's a Wonderful Life
IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE is a wonderful movie. Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed have fantastic chemisty, its like they were born to play their parts. The story line is terrific, the dialogue is memorable at times, and Frank Capra's direction make this a holiday favorite and a classic. Christmas wouldn't seem to be the same, if this movie wasn't playing every Christmas eve. I never tire seeing this movie.
