American Beauty
A very beautiful film... hence the name American Beauty. If you needed any other reason to state that Kevin Spacey is one of the best actors of the 90s this is it... in fact, this alone is it. Se7en and Usual Suspects are really cool and all, but here he's everything from funny, strange, cool, perverted, and I'll use this word again 'beautiful'. Everything in this film is. It's really hard to explain why you should enjoy this, but you will... it's pure American beauty.

6
Children of Men 2006,  R)
Children of Men
My favorite movie of 2006.
7
American History X 1998,  R)
American History X
This movie is incredible and moving and so much more than I ever expected. Nearly flawless story and performances. It touches on racism more perfectly then any movie I've ever seen and makes Crash seem corny and week. I've seen Edward Norton in great movies like The Illusionist and Fight Club, but neither performance was as powerful as this one. The movie is realistic and makes you feel for every character you see. One of the very few fives I'll give out. Great movie don't hesitate to see it.

Into the Wild 2007,  R)

Sin City 2005,  R)

Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime)
This is quite possibly the best movie ever, even though it's animated, but still awesome. So much awesome action and great storyline.

Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2002,  R)
Cidade de Deus (City of God)
Not really sure what this was about going into it besides that it was about the rough of life of Rio de Janeiro, the city of god. I was quite pleased with what I saw even if it wasn't very easy to watch. A true story of how a city can turn boys into these complete animals and how revenge just turns into war. So many stories wrapped into one and too much to tell. Watch it.
17
Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)
18
The Machinist 2003,  R)
The Machinist
If you liked Fight Club you'll like this. This one is even darker and scarier, but also deals with an Insomniac and troubles functioning in reality. Christian Bale was a skeleton, but he was still able to act great. Thank god they stopped him at 120... 100 lbs is way to light for any guy. Anyways if your into films that mess with your head. This is for you.

Platoon
The poor are always fucked over by the rich, but boy they can take it. They are the grunts of Vietnam. Charlie Sheen does a decent job as Chris Taylor the one person who dropped out of college to go to war, the rest of them had never even thought of college, but quickly he is able to fit himself in among a rich cast including great performances by Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Forrest Whitaker, Johnny Depp and John McGinley. Chris go through moral battles in his head deciding which sgt between Elias (dafoe) and barnes (berenger) he is going take over, but after a run in with villagers things turn nasty and rather than fighting the gooks they begin to fight themselves. Great war film, more about the people and less about the fighting, but it captures everything wonderfully.

Lucky Number Slevin 2006,  R)
Lucky Number Slevin
Morgan Freeman vs Ben Kinglsey as rival gangsters and happen to live in identical buildings straight across the street from each other. Both have brought it in Slevin (Hartnett) by accident and have some deal with Bruce Willis the assassin. The movie is not very dark and a bit funny kind of like Pulp Fiction though it's no copy at all, completely different really. Then of course it has a surprise ending that makes it all add up to an enjoyable experience.

There Will Be Blood 2007,  R)

The Painted Veil 2006,  PG-13)

Kaze no tani no Naushika (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) (Warriors of the Wind)

By far the greatest comedy of all time. Clevor unique FUNNY humor, and also actually smart. So many memorable lines in this movie.

51
Inside Man 2006,  R)
Inside Man
A good story about a heist. Smart criminal and interesting plot line making the motives for the robbery of a bank perhaps a little different than you may expect. Clive Owen has a pretty good American accent actually and Denzel plays a detective! OMG! So yeah go see this.
52
Seven (Se7en) 1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
In an interesting murder story indeed involving seven murders for the seven deadly sins. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman do a good job in playing the two detectives on the trail of a serial killer. All of it comes down to a climatic ending which makes the slowish start, which is brought to life by the grusome deaths and quality acting, all worth it.
53
Forrest Gump 1994,  PG-13)
54
Black Hawk Down 2001,  R)
55
A Clockwork Orange 1971,  R)
56
Monsters, Inc. 2001,  G)
57
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys) 1995,  R)
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys)
Very interesting movie dealing with the insanity, animal treatment, time travel, and just about anything you can think of. The best part of the movie is Brad Pitt's acting. I've always known him to be a good actor, but in this he plays an insane (literally) left wing animal rights activist (the son of man who tests chemicals on animals). This sci-fish journey to the past to stop the terrorist group 12 monkeys from unleashing a chemical disease on to the world to kill 5 billion people is a good one.

Pi 1998,  R)
Pi
One of the strangest movies I've ever seen and one of the best directed. There are a lot of good mainstream movies out there, but they aren't art. This is a true and indie film and a true artistic film. Sometimes movie with that status can tend to be unwatchable, but this one grasps you with it's interesting concepts of god, math and the equation of life.
78
Good Will Hunting 1997,  R)
79
Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson 2007,  R)
80
Independence Day 1996,  PG-13)

Letters from Iwo Jima 2006,  R)
Letters from Iwo Jima
The theme of this story reminds me a bit of All Quiet on the Western Front. The patriotism is what brings many of them to their deaths, they are still loyal to their country in a hopeless battle that is clearly lost. The best moment of the story is when General Kuribayashi read the letter from the dead American soldier whom he tried to keep alive, truly touching. This was the most moving war movie I have seen.

Pulp Fiction
I was expecting something a bit more spectacular than what I saw, but this is a quality film none the less. Tarantino is one of the only people that can turn disturbing, semi-corny, action-thrillers into something interesting. I wasn't a big fan of John Travolta's scenes and was looking forward to seeing alot more Uma Thurman, but Samuel Jackson played his role he plays and every movie and Bruce Willis saved the day with his performances in the watch scenes. Overall it was good, but I thought there'd be more.

Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies)
It's the most depressing movie I've seen. Don't be discouraged because it's Japanese and animated it's a really good movie like all the Studio Ghibli films. It's a magical film, but really gets you when you realize the evil that caused all the sorrow is coming from American planes.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
I don't have much to say about this one, but when you get inside the heads of two guys on one humongous acid trip prepare to see blood orgy dinosaurs, flooded hotel rooms, flying bats in the middle of the dessert, and a hell of a lot of near death situations and its all really funny. Johnny Depp is bald and Benicio Del Toro is fat as hell and the way they act towards each other is so good you'd think they really were drunk, stoned, or whatever. Apparently a fly swatter is a good standoff weapon against a gun. Who knew. Johnny Depp knew... Johnny Depp knew.
113
Training Day 2001,  R)
Training Day
Yeah. Another Denzel movie. I want to say this one's different, but they are all different. Ethan Hawke is the rookie brought up by the veteran (denzel) who doesn't seem to respect the rules of law enforcement. At first it seems to just be his character, but you find out more. Most of it is pretty intriguing and genuine, but a few action parts are kind of stupid and impossible that belong in Die Hard not this. Still good movie.
