My Favorite Movies

  DuchessNukem's Rating My Rating
1
Sons and Lovers 1960,  Unrated)
Sons and Lovers
Fine performances from all, especially a young Dean Stockwell doing a fantastic English accent. Fantastic direction by Jack Cardiff and a "true to the novel" script
2
The Werewolf of Washington 1973,  PG)
The Werewolf of Washington
Okay, not a masterpiece, but a film that is so bad it's good. Cheesy dialogue, bad effects and overall appaling script, the film is only saved by the performance of Dean Stockwell (you can see a pattern in my favourite films)
3
Brief Encounter 1945,  Unrated)
Brief Encounter
A classic! I defy anyone to bad mouth this film.
4
Psych-Out 1968,  Unrated)
Psych-Out
A great film to watch when you are either drunk, very happy or high on something. A psychedelic rollercoaster.
5
Blue 1993,  R)
Blue
Derek Jarman's final film as he discusses life with AIDS. Very moving
6
Paris, Texas 1983,  R)
Paris, Texas
Brought it on a whim and Im glad I did. Very touching story and nicely filmed
7
Dawn of the Dead 1978,  R)
Dawn of the Dead
The best of the trilogy (I dont count Land...). When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth
8
Carry On... Up the Khyber 1968,  Unrated)
9
Carry on Doctor 1968,  PG)
10
Carry on Spying (Agent Oooh!) 1964,  Unrated)
Carry on Spying (Agent Oooh!)
My favourite Carry On. Kenneth Williams and Barbara Windsor are at their best here.
11
A Matter of Life and Death (Stairway to Heaven) 1946,  PG)
A Matter of Life and Death (Stairway to Heaven)
Visually stunning and a great film. There is nothing, in my view, that is bad about this film
12
Withnail and I 1987,  R)
Withnail and I
If there is a better British film then this, then I havent seen it! Richard E. Grant has never been better, the script is full of wit and humor and the entire cast are on top form.
13
Blue Velvet 1986,  R)
14
McHale's Navy 1997,  PG)
McHale's Navy
Funny in places, but overall an appaling attempt to bring the classic series to a modern audience. Too much effort put on SFX and bad acting all round, with the exceptions of French Stewart, Debra Messing and Dean Stockwell who are very much wasted in this film.
15
The Godfather 1972,  R)
The Godfather
I made myself sit through this and Im happy that I did. I can understand why people call this such a great film now
16
The Boy With Green Hair 1948,  Unrated)
The Boy With Green Hair
Another Dean Stockwell film, but this time when he was a young lad. A controversial film at the time, its message about war orphans is very touching.
17
Hot Fuzz 2006,  R)
Hot Fuzz
Brilliant. Makes you hope it wont be too long before another Pegg/Wright film comes out
18
Shaun of the Dead 2004,  R)
Shaun of the Dead
Who would have thought zombies would fit in so well within the romcom genre
19
Ready to Wear (Prêt-à-Porter) 1994,  R)
20
Gosford Park 2001,  R)
21
The Player 1992,  R)
22
Rites Of Passage 1999,  R)
Rites Of Passage
Very touching story about a father and his sons trying to resolve their problems in a log cabin...oh, and trying not to get killed by two escpaed convicts at the same time
23
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 2006,  Unrated)
24
Compulsion 1959,  Unrated)
Compulsion
An absolute must-see. A great court room scene, attempted rape scene and fantastic performances from Dean Stockwell and Orson Welles makes this film one of the greatest films I have seen for a long time
25
Long Day's Journey Into Night 1962,  Unrated)
Long Day's Journey Into Night
A triumph in the history of film, with superb performances from all involved. Hepburn is nothing more than magnificant as the morphine addict mother surrounded by a family falling to pieces. Ralph Richardson and Jason Robards Jr give the performances of their lives as does the extremly talented, ever suprising Dean Stockwell, whose depiction of the youngest son suffering from consumption is perhaps his finest role to date. At three hours, its a film which requires much patience. However, the rewards and merits after viewing this film will stay with you forever.
26
Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1974,  PG)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The best Python film. The Black Knight, the Knights who say Nee and killer rabbit are only three reasons why this is one of my all time favourites
27
Monty Python's Life of Brian 1979,  R)
Monty Python's Life of Brian
A great film, but I dont find it the best film of the Pythons. Nevertheless, its still a great film to sit down and enjoy
28
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life 1983,  R)
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life
Overlooked, but it has its moments. Death at the dinner party has got to be the best thing the Pythons ever wrote
29
The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)
30
Schindler's List 1993,  R)
Schindler's List
Simply inspiring and very emotional. If you dont cry at the end of this film, you have no soul.
31
Straw Dogs 1971,  R)
32
The Wicker Man 1974,  R)
The Wicker Man
The original and the best. Just goes to show we Brits know a thing or two more when it comes to making horror films. The horrible remake? Nicholas Cage? What were they thinking?
33
Vertigo 1958,  PG)
Vertigo
My favourite Hitchcock film. Fantastic music and visuals
34
The Exorcist 1973,  R)
35
Still Crazy 1998,  R)
Still Crazy
Again, a film which shows British cinema is still kicking. Bill Nighy has never been better (well, maybe)
36
West Side Story 1961,  PG)
West Side Story
You can't beat a good musical and they dont come any better than this
37
Guys and Dolls 1955,  Unrated)
Guys and Dolls
Love the music, but not entirely sure whether I like Marlon Brando in this film or not
38
Dead Again 1991,  R)
Dead Again
Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh and Derek Jacobi give a great performance in this supernatural thriller
39
Kim 1951,  G)
Kim
Errol Flynn and a young Dean Stockwell work well together in this classic tale
40
Married to the Mob 1988,  R)
Married to the Mob
A nice little film aided by great actors. And damn it, Dean Stockwell should have gotten the Oscar for this, instead of Kevin Kline with a moustache in a movie about a fish!!!
41
Passport to Pimlico 1949,  Unrated)
Passport to Pimlico
A nice little film from the Ealing collection
42
City Lights 1931,  G)
City Lights
Charlie Chaplin, again, being both comical and heartwarming at the same time.
43
Anchors Aweigh 1945,  Unrated)
Anchors Aweigh
A firm favourite of mine, with catchy songs and great performances. Sinatra and Kelly work so well together and are aided by the fantastic talents of Kathryn Grayson and a very young Dean Stockwell.
44
Day of the Dead 1985,  Unrated)
45
Night of the Living Dead 1968,  R)
46
The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog 1927,  Unrated)
The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog
