Almost Famous 2000, R)
As a director [Crowe] has an extraordinary gift for drawing out rounded, complex performances even in supporting roles and for indicating the fine emotional shadings in the relationships among his characters. You don't just watch Almost Famous, you listen to it. You groove on it. oh yeah it also made the song Tiny Dancer cool again. |

We Were Soldiers 2002, R)
the ending was classic how they fought for each other in a war that nobody knew what the meaning of was. While some will object to the idea of a Vietnam picture with such a rah-rah, patriotic tone, Soldiers ultimately achieves its main strategic objective: dramatizing the human cost of the conflict that came to define a generation. |

Rocky 1976, PG)
The memorable combination of the torturous gym workouts, the runs through the streets of Philadelphia and the carcass-beating in the abattoir all combine beautifully as Balboa trains 'to eat lightning and crap thunder'. Rocky is an old-fashioned fairytale brilliantly revamped to chime in with the depressed mood of the '70s. |
