My Favorite Movies

1
Dune 1984,  PG-13)
Dune
Based on the best Science Fiction novel of all time of the same name. It does well in rendering a story closer to the heart of the book than most adaptions. The result is a direction that lends depth and delivers a very strong performance.
2
Heat 1995,  R)
Heat
I rate this movie the best of the best of action gangster movies. Perfectly cast characters, top acting, and it takes the genre to a higher level.

This is definitely my most favourite role that De Niro has played, he has a very strong believable presence in his character.

The fact that I was living in L.A. at the time this was shot and released, it had a very distinct reality to it, and I have been in many of the places where the film was shot.. making it really come ALIVE!!

(Beware the green tow-truck...)
3
The Outlaw Josey Wales 1976,  PG)
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Spectacular period action/drama western!! At the end of the Civil War, not all the southern boys feel like bending over and taking it up the rear end by their conquerors... and Josey Wales is out for a reckoning - justice to avenge his family lost by the violence. A classic role and one of Clint's best films.
4
Tombstone 1993,  R)
Tombstone
My all-time favourite western. An immaculate script with some of the most memorable one-liners. There is an excellent cast, with very methodically acted roles played to the full. Overall a very colourful and involving period piece, lending a accurate feel for life in the Arizona silver-rush.
5
American Psycho 2000,  R)
American Psycho
How dark must my sense of humour be to laugh at this movie? Chilling, yet with clever verbal wit (particularly in the narrative) Set in the 80's, it includes a very good snapshot of the music of the era, a running commentary of which is twisted into this psychotic tale.
6
The Postman 1997,  PG-13)
The Postman
More post-apocalyptic excellence by Kostner! Full storyline, for which they could have easily added a lot more... in fact, this could have been done as two movies to really fill it out... But its very enjoyable as is..!
7
The Crow 1994,  R)
The Crow
Brandon Lee's passionate performance is nothing short of awe-inspiring. A well-laid out world.
8

High Plains Drifter 1973,  R)
High Plains Drifter
Fantastic piece - What happens when a town is cursed to hell? A small town supporting a local mining firm is living in fear of their pathetic little lives, and for good reason! A couple of hired gunmen, hired to protect them, got a taste for powermongering, and began a reign of terror over the previously innocent townsfolk. When a man is brutally bullwhipped to death in the street while the whole town watches, he curses them all to hell.
It is after this has happened that the 'Stranger' appears, tough, no-nonsense, and life looks like it will take a turn for the better for the town if they can only enlist him to protect them from the rampaging gunfighters, just released from prison.
However, nothing is what it seems with this stranger......

One of my most favourite Clint movies, a fantastic period western! Great gritty one-liners and a picturesque cross-section of life in the lawless west. Directed by Clint Eastwood. (Tough Hombre)
13
The Chronicles of Riddick 2004,  PG-13)
The Chronicles of Riddick
Originality is hard to come by in modern sci-fi.. but the universe of Riddick is Awesome!! It is exciting, a cousin to the star-wars galaxy
14
Blade Runner 1982,  R)
Blade Runner
AWESOME!~! One of those few films with a combined script/soundtrack/characters that gives a very rewatchable feel to the film. Excellent direction.... by someone who obviously hates predictability and shallow endings.
15
1492: Conquest of Paradise 1992,  PG-13)
1492: Conquest of Paradise
A very evocative picture of life over 500 years ago... superstitious, with the unknown to the west.
This movie does a great justice to bring that era to life, with spectacular sets, costumes, and of course, the ships!!

For lovers of history, this is one of the best films in the 'historical epic' genre, and Vangelis' score creates an eerie presence that probes the depth of their struggle and existence.

It is more a story of the life of Columbus, from just before he gains approval to sail in search of Asia to the west. The man Columbus was an incredible character in history, and the casting of Depardieu in this role was perfect, as he has the screen presence to carry the burden-ful role. I cannot imagine any american actor who could have pulled it off in his stead.

Not designed to be a super-blockbuster, it was made in honour of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the New World, and lend a real representation of what happened.

Overall, it is a highly under-rated film; has such a depth of character; and captures the spirit of the era!

Very passionate... not for the shallow.
16
The Last of the Mohicans 1992,  R)
The Last of the Mohicans
An incredible historical epic, bringing the very substance of life in the early new world to life.... Wonderful soundtrack, and excellent acting and direction. Even if you are not normally a fan of a sweeping historical drama, WATCH THIS, as it is also an action, and romance movie at the same time.
