Inglourious Basterds 2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
I must be in film heaven.
Since when do I get to see two amazing movies in the theater practically back to back. "Distinct 9" and now "Inglorious Basterds". Basterds has completely surpassed my expectations. I have never been a huge Tarantino fan. Sure, Pulp Fiction is quite good but everything else he's done has been so-so in my book. This film is something totally different. Tarantino manages to approach typical scenes and completely break them away from the "rules". This film is NOT typical! The cast is top notch and even Pitt's ridiculous accent has a purpose. By far, Christoph Waltz' fantastic performance was the most unexpected. And when it comes to the soundtrack, It's easy to say that it makes this movie. The opening scene couldn't be better. All I can say is how dare you mature audiences choose to watch "GI Joe" over the Basterds!
2
District 9 2009,  R)
District 9
I never thought that I would be this happy to see the "Halo" movie project fail. District 9 is by far the greatest sci-fi action film that I have had the pleasure to see in years. Everything is crafted with originality and enough imagination to have people watching over and over again. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see some alien guns destroy crap straight out of video game land. It's a thrill ride worth the watch, the buy, and the praise. Just a word to the wise, watch out for the people popping....
3
Oldboy 2004,  R)
Oldboy
Wow, here is an amazing foreign film. Truthfully I can't see any of our American directors pulling this one off. Min-sik Choi is excellent. Expect a very gritty masterpiece.
4
Dawn of the Dead 1978,  R)
Dawn of the Dead
This is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the greatest zombie movie of all time. Its got the corny 70's feel, the gore, the mixture of horrible and fantastic acting and zombies everywhere. I was a fool to think that the classics couldn't come out on top.
5
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father 2008,  Unrated)
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father
This is by far the hardest movie I've ever had to watch. In fact It's safe to say that I've never emotionally experienced a film like this one ever before. That being said I could never watch it again. Buy it and lend it out, yes. This is a story that deserves a watch by everyone, including those few who tend to stay away from R rated material. I'd go as far as to say that Dear Zachary may be the best documentary you will ever have the privilege to watch...
6
Shaolin Soccer 2001,  PG-13)
Shaolin Soccer
This is brilliant and just a tad better than Kung Fu Hustle. I personally find it amazingly fun and entertaining.
7
Mutant Chronicles 2008,  R)
Mutant Chronicles
Are you kidding me? No one likes this movie? You go and blatantly love on movies like "Spiderman 3" and "The Fast and the Furious",...but no love here? "The Punisher" has a better rating?... You guys are severely breaking my balls. This film has a small budget. I mean c'mon, it's got to. Nearly everything is done in front of a green screen. However thanks to a fantastic cast, an awesome story and some massively creative art design "The Mutant Chronicles" soars over most of its million dollar, blockbuster competitors. I watch alot of movies. ALOT. As far as I can tell this is one of THE most entertaining films I've seen this year. It's like watching a long video game cinematic. It really makes me happy to see a film that can hold its own without selling out. Plus, Thomas Jane (for the first time ever) didn't make me mad. I swear, after I buy this DVD I will use it to physically knock the sense into everyone who curses it. Watch out "The Godfather: Part 3" fans!
8
The Big Lebowski 1998,  R)
The Big Lebowski
This one's classic. Nearly every line is a ruby. The plot and characters are amazing. John Goodman is priceless, as are the rest of the cast members. Its this kind of humor that fuels me through most days. If you can handle dry humor and a jank load of Vietnam inspired cursing, you had better check this out.
9
There Will Be Blood 2007,  R)
There Will Be Blood
Awesome. It was just what I was hoping for. Though I was expecting to walk away from it finally being able to decide which was the better of 2007, between this and No Country For Old Men. Now that I'm at that point, I simply can't decide. They both are rather slow. But man, It's definitely not the bad kinda slow. All I can say is that Daniel Day-Lewis is a phenomenal actor, the soundtrack is pure gold and the story doesn't let me down a bit. I recommend it to everyone.
10
Dark City 1998,  R)
Dark City
Wow. Why on earth is this not popular!! Dark City is my new favorite science fiction movie. It's alot like a mixture of "Brazil", "The Matrix" and (possible spoiler) "The Truman Show"! The story is genius. Everything else (the acting, art style, dialogue, etc) was perfect! My only, ONLY small complaint was with the speed of the film. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge fan of slow movies. It's just that sometimes It felt like the scenes were flying by a little too fast. It in no way ruined anything for me though. (I like to think that they didn't have a choice as no one wants to sit through a 4 hour movie). All in all I say that you can't call yourself a movie buff until you give this film a chance.
11
Children of Men 2006,  R)
Children of Men
So well done, I was blown away. It had its flaws but they can be overlooked by anyone who really cares. Loved the story and the characters. Very realistic emotion and feel to the whole thing.
12
Shaun of the Dead 2004,  R)
Shaun of the Dead
Classic. Shaun of the Dead is THE zombie comedy. I'm a zombie fan. No, I'm an extreme zombie fan. I'll be lucky to have only 2 zombie dreams a week. You laugh, but there is no denying my elaborate zombie dreams. What's more, my zombie dreams are always fun. Always.
So when you put this information together you can see why this film is on my top ten list.
13
Son of Rambow 2007,  PG-13)
Son of Rambow
This completely original film is a real winner! It was excellently directed, written and stylized. The cast (mostly consisting of children) was fantastic. Will Poulter especially has a great deal of talent. Son Of Rambow is one of my new favorites and I recommend an immediate watch!
14
28 Days Later 2002,  R)
28 Days Later
This is my all time favorite zombie movie. Fantastic cinematography. I love Danny Boyle's choice of music. The story is pretty solid as are the characters. Every zombie movie creates its own form of zombies. In this case the zombies move very fast (as does the camera, which is sweet) and they turn seconds after the virus is in their system. To top all that off, the zombies don't just bite. The virus heightens their aggression and sends them into furies. The opening scenes are amazingly stunning. AND its british. What more could you ask.
15
Anchorman - The Legend Of Ron Burgundy 2004,  PG-13)
Anchorman - The Legend Of Ron Burgundy
This movie is so dumb. And its so loud and just...just dumb. I can't help it. Its too funny, and one of my favorites.
16
3:10 to Yuma 2007,  R)
3:10 to Yuma
The best western I have seen as of yet. Fantastic cast (besides the obvious, Tudyk is always great and Foster looks freaking awesome!). This film seems dead on when it comes to wild west period realism. And the action packed storyline was completely entertaining. Watch it!
17
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Hype or no hype, Heath ledger is phenomenal. His joker is my absolute favorite representation of a super villain ever put on the big screen. The movie itself: Phenomenal. Its the best superhero flick you have ever seen and probably ever will see in years. I was afraid that after all this buzz my point of view going into the theatre would be completely biased. Not possible. Screw 5 stars; "The Dark Knight" gets 6!
18
The Matrix 1999,  R)
The Matrix
Not much to say. You don't run into someone who doesnt feel this way about The Matrix very often...
19
Old School 2003,  R)
Old School
Let it be known that I am NOT a fan of the language, nor a fan of the nudity. I'm a fan of Will Ferrell being hilarious, Vaughn's wit and a funny storyline. Plain and simple.
20
The Host (Gwoemul) 2006,  R)
The Host (Gwoemul)
I hate it when great movies get bad reps! This is my all time favorite monster movie. Very well done. Good story and fantastic effects. I didn't hate anything about it.
21
The Machinist 2003,  R)
The Machinist
This movie seems to be overlooked by alot of people. But all you have to do is watch it to see how dedicated Christian Bale was to this film.
22
Hot Fuzz 2006,  R)
Hot Fuzz
Obviously way better than Shaun of the Dead, (which is amazing)! No excuse is good enough. Its the most enjoyable and action-packed film that I have witnessed in as long as I can remember.
23
The Boondock Saints 2000,  R)
The Boondock Saints
Action packed and Irish with a hint of Dafoe and Connelly! C'mon now!!
24
Office Space 1999,  R)
25
Lady in the Water 2006,  PG-13)
Lady in the Water
I can't help it, this movie just makes me feel good. Its one of "those" movies for me. I don't even know if I can explain it. On a side note, I'm always a Giamatti fan.
26
Snatch 2001,  R)
Snatch
My favorite Guy Ritchie film. It's the perfect entertainment package. Great characters played by great actors, fantastic story, awesome cinematography and vision, the list goes on.
27
The Prestige 2006,  PG-13)
28
The Fountain 2006,  PG-13)
The Fountain
This movie was powerful, vibrant, and loaded with vision and creativity. Great emotion. Hugh Jackman really fooled me. I was not confident that he could pull it off.
29
Army of Darkness 1993,  R)
Army of Darkness
Who doesn't love this movie! Personally I like it better than Evil Dead 2, mostly because of the 1300's setting. It added the extra fantasy, horror, comedy, zaniness that I crave. I may go as far as to say that Army of Darkness is the greatest rainy day film in existence.
30
Kung Fu Hustle 2004,  R)
Kung Fu Hustle
It may appear stupid but don't be fooled. This is no R-tarded, "Kung Pow! Enter the Fist". Its pure entertainment and a very well done karate movie. And funny! In my mind it is matched only by its predecessor, "Shaolin Soccer". Stephen chow gets two thumbs up for taking chances and being creative.
31
Death to Smoochy 2002,  R)
32
Memento 2000,  R)
33
The Godfather 1972,  R)
The Godfather
Anyone who has taken the hours to watch the trilogy knows which one is the greatest. This is where I can argue that reading books isn't always better than watching movies. Loved every second of it, even the quiet seconds.
34
Good Will Hunting 1997,  R)
35
Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991,  R)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Here is another movie that just makes me feel good. It is a fantastic apocalyptic movie. (Apocalyptic and post are my favorite movie scenarios) The effects were ahead of their time. And the cast was just right. I can't think of anyone better to play the bad guy than Robert Patrick. Fun movie.
36
Léon (The Professional) 1994,  R)
37
Neverwas 2005,  PG-13)
Neverwas
This is one of my new favorites! Great cast and great story. Everything came together well and left me wishing there were more films like it. Nolte and McKellen were swell. And this movie was amazingly clean. (something I imagine effected its popularity...)
38
The Kingdom 2007,  R)
The Kingdom
First of all, the opening credits immediately told me that I was in for a good time. I could not find anything about this movie that I did not like. The action was superb and super intense. The story and the emotion of the story was definitely on par. And the cast was great! I've never been a Jamie Fox fan, but I can honestly say that I enjoyed him in this one. I think this is an important movie to watch, for those who can handle a great deal of violence.
39
Everything is Illuminated 2005,  PG-13)
40
Little Miss Sunshine 2006,  R)
Little Miss Sunshine
Fantastic cast. Not only is it very funny, its also very real. Whoever feels differently wouldn't know a good movie if it jumped up and bit them in the face.
41
300 2007,  R)
300
I don't know how many times i'll watch this one before getting sick of it.
42
Rescue Dawn 2006,  PG-13)
Rescue Dawn
So good! Its hard for me to believe that anyone could seriously give this under 4 and a half stars. Sure some scenes could have been done differently, story could have been told differently, the ending could have been different, etc. But the fact of the matter is that this is a true story, told truthfully by a dedicated director and preformed by dedicated actors. Some of the scenes were shot in a way where it feels like whats going on is real. As if you're watching it happening live feed on cnn. The story is amazing and sad but sometimes throws in the comedy. Besides all the other fantastic actors, Steve Zahn really gets my respect for this one. Rescue Dawn if definitely on my top ten war movie's list.
43
Fiddler on the Roof 1971,  G)
Fiddler on the Roof
This is a classic and a masterpiece. I know not everyone likes a musical...or the Jews for that matter...but really those who give this film a bad rating are most likely children...
44
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
You just can't find a movie like this one. Original and imaginative. Directed brilliantly. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are fantastic together. Definitely one of my favorite films.
45
American Splendor 2003,  R)
American Splendor
Very Original and creative. Who could have guessed this could come out of such a plain, seemingly boring guys life. Paul giamatti is perfect and the film doesn't dissapoint.
46
The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo del diablo) 2000,  R)
The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo del diablo)
If you liked the ever popular "Pan's Labyrinth" you have no reason not to like this one. In my book The Devil's Backbone is it's superior. Not by alot, but by enough. I recommend a watch. Oh and c'mon people, this wasn't meant to be a horror movie...
47
Wristcutters - A Love Story 2006,  R)
Wristcutters - A Love Story
This is a really enjoyable, entertaining, and original movie. Great characters, great plot, and the list goes on. I recommend it to all those looking for something different.
48
I Am Legend 2007,  PG-13)
I Am Legend
One of my favorites for sure! First, the story concept and art concept is fantastic. Abandoned NY looks just as it should and the opening hunt scene really sparks the imagination. Secondly, the emotion is real and raw. I thought Will Smith creates a great character. The only things I wish were different have to do with the mutant's CGI (still great as it is though) and a bit of storyline to back up the enemy. If only the movie could have been an hour longer...
49
No Country for Old Men 2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
I loved it. The cast (especially Bardem) was perfect. The cinematography was rock solid as was the plot. Love how the story panned out. Not sure if I'm a fan of the ending yet. I won't be able to make that decision until I've watched the movie a second time. I will say that it is typical of the Coen Bros.
50
Juno 2007,  PG-13)
Juno
For a while I was worried about this one. After seeing Superbad, I figured this would follow in its lude and sexual footsteps. Not so. Thankfully Juno is a fantastic film with alot of heart. Expect a great cast, great story and something out of the norm.
51
Once 2007,  R)
Once
Very true to life. The soundtrack is fantastic and the ending is perfect. Not typical. Worth the watch
52
The Lady Vanishes 1938,  PG)
The Lady Vanishes
This film is amazing. Why you ask is this film amazing besides the mere fact that it was created by Alfred Hitchcock? Well my friends this gem was way WAY ahead of its time. It has dry witty humor, delayed comedic reactions, a mystery that is actually mysterious and a really fun cast. If this movie lost its dated edge (the lack of computers and color for starters) it would fit right in with todays blockbusters. I suggest you watch it. Though I'm afraid you'll have to find it first...
53
Kung Fu Panda 2008,  PG)
Kung Fu Panda
This is the most entertaining animated flick I've seen in a long while. ( I think it might have even beaten "Indie", actually.) The animation is top notch. The cast is amazing, as expected. Jack Black WAS the panda which is very surprising. Normally you see actors "playing" their roles but rarely do you see them just playing...themselves. Jack Black is playing Jack Black in this movie and I couldn't be happier. Props to the guys in charge for this decision. Oh and yes, this is a karate movie. The action is very fast and quite cool. Its times like this when I wish they could throw in a bit more violence...maybe up the rating. Keep everything else the same though. Just add more stank to the punches and maybe a few blood splatters...
54
In Bruges 2008,  R)
In Bruges
I loved it. Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes are always amazing in my book. And as for Farrel, I was impressed. I've only witnessed a few of his roles that have deserved respect. Thankfully this is one of them. The story was good too. It was a bit slow in parts (don't expect a consistent high paced shootout) but overall original, interesting and funny.
55
Tropic Thunder 2008,  R)
Tropic Thunder
The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that after waiting forever for a movie like Tropic Thunder it's always hard not to be a little disappointed when it finally comes out. There are a few things I wish were different. For instance: the constant swears. Sure it makes sense to swear in a Vietnam movie. However, if 50% of the F-bombs were replaced with funny banter I would have had so many more chances to laugh! (And Jack Black didn't have that many laugh out loud scenes. This was something I didn't expect...) Don't get me wrong, I do still love this movie. They definitely pushed the limit. I can see people hating this film with a passion. All in all if you can handle alot of gore and language watch this movie!
56
The Birdcage 1996,  R)
The Birdcage
This is one of my most favorite comedies ever! Nathan Lane and Robin Williams are awesome together and Azaria just plain old makes my day. The story is completely original and fun. I love that I love this movie!
57
Alien 1979,  R)
Alien
I finally got the chance to watch the whole movie from beginning to end! Its no lie that Alien is a true classic and one of the greatest science fiction films ever made. The cast is totally believable and everything was ahead of its time. Completely entertaining.
58
Gremlins 1984,  PG)
Gremlins
Love it. This is classic 80's puppets and animatronics. The great cast and creative direction leads to a funny and entertaining little movie. Everytime I see Gizmo it makes me happy.
59
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Wow. This is one of those creative, heartfelt epics that can be compared to the likes of Big Fish and Forest Gump. The cast is completely right. Blanchett especially blew me away. Easily one of my favorite films of the year, maybe even of the last few years. The hype is well deserved. (finally)
60
Coraline 2009,  PG)
Coraline
One of the most creative and original claymations I've seen in years. These guys are at the top of their game. Coraline manages to not only impress with it's cast and imaginative art design, but also with the storyline itself. Classic and definitely not just for kids.
61
Up 2009,  PG)
Up
What a fantastic film! Great for any age. I'm so amazed by how Pixar can still dish out creatively animated, brilliantly acted, and truly heartfelt stories after all these years of hits. Keep them coming!
62
Outlander 2008,  R)
Outlander
Many people won't agree with the high rating I've given this one. But here's the thing; "Outlander" has a strong cast, sturdy and original (though not hugely in depth) storyline, and fantastic artistic design. I was very entertained. That being said, why shouldn't I give this unpopular and unheard of film a good rating. When you compare it side by side to some of the largely popular and high grossing films of '08 you'll see that It's more deserving than It's perceived to be.
63
Pandorum 2009,  R)
Pandorum
The best sci-fi flick I've seen in ages! It's a ride from beginning to end with great acting and creative design through and through. Don't expect the typical. By the ending I was left wishing It was a trilogy! If only that was logically possible!
64
The Usual Suspects 1995,  R)
The Usual Suspects
Love it. The amazing cast coupled with a great story (though not neccessarily "technical") makes this film different than the rest. It mixes things up a bit. By the end I was stuck with the word "original" but couldn't come up with..why. I even figured out the ending long before and still loved it! That I like. Keyser Söze!
65
Sherlock Holmes 2009,  PG-13)
Sherlock Holmes
Way better than expected! And to think I was actually reluctant to watch...
"Sherlock Holmes" is quick and witty, the cinematography is fantastic, the cast is near perfect (one of my new favorite characters of Downey) and overall extremely entertaining. Guy Ritchie needed this after his last few films. Luckily his style makes the movie. By the end credits I was was still being entertained by the sheer amount of artistic work done on each "page". I can only hope that the sequel exceeds my expectations like the first has.
