1
Magic 1978,  R)
Magic
Awesome mix of romance and horror. Manages to provoke great pathos at the same time as it provokes effective chills
2
Marathon Man 1976,  R)
Marathon Man
Amazing nail-biting thriller, despite changes it was every bit as good as the book! You just may need a few watches to "get" it, but certainly not to enjoy it
3
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974,  R)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Perhaps the most perfect true horror film ever made. Nearly every shot is a bit unsettling, and the scenes of actual horror have you on the edge of your seat
4
White Heat 1949,  Unrated)
White Heat
A great character study of the American gangster. His relationships with his ruthless yet doting mother and the cop infiltrating his gang are brilliant. Very violent and hugely engrossing for a film at the time.
5
Amadeus 1984,  PG)
Amadeus
Though the venomous relationship Salieri had with Mozart is fictional, it does manage to put the film in an important historical context and deepen the messages of jealousy and mediocrity.
6
Take the Money and Run 1969,  PG)
Take the Money and Run
Woody Allen's first work is my favorite of his. The jokes are hardly ever groan-worthy, and they come fast and clever enough to drown the stinkers out. Left me feeling good and has the power to make me laugh even on repeat viewings.
7
Dark Star 1974,  G)
Dark Star
Truly a great film, especially for the budget. Highly entertaining characters and hilariously lighthearted portrayal of intellectual subjects.
8
Dog Day Afternoon 1975,  R)
Dog Day Afternoon
Most "based on a true story" films are either very-loosely based, or so tightly based on their source that they are almost hard to watch. This film has the advantage of being based on an incident that according to reports, truly was as strange as what was portrayed, with a few discrepancies for character development. The actors do an amazing job with this. Everyone is sympathetic to an extent.
9
Falling Down 1993,  R)
Falling Down
Really a film for the malcontent working man in these times. It evolves/devolves from a simple story of a good man desperate for satisfaction into a bit of "rampage" sort of fantasy, but keeps an air of realistic drama and dark humor to keep it from getting pretentious.
10
Metropolis 1927,  PG-13)
Metropolis
Beautifully staged, with a good message.
