This is a must see for anyone that enjoys a good space based action adventure. It is especially great if you are already a Star Trek fan.
The casting was almost flawless, and the storyline was true Star Trek fair.
Yes, they did take a few liberties with some things, but they provided a reasonable explanation of the chages. For the sake of those who may not have watched this film yet, I will not go into any details about that. Let me just say that you will not be disapointed. A true feast for the mind and senses.
I heard one critic say that there was nothing in this film to make you connect with any of the characters. I find it sad that he could not see what to me was so obvious. That being the fact that this film was made for people who were already connected to the characters. No one else really mattered, because if you were not already a Star Trek fan, it is unlikely that any movie would be able to change that fact.
The story storyline represents one of the most important aspects of the Star Trek saga. That being the mutual love, respect and trust that the key characters had for each other. Regardless of who ordered them to stand down, or what the odds were against them succeeding, there was quite simply no possibility that Captain James T. Kirk, and his people were going sit back and do nothing when their friends were in need. If there was even a one in a trillion chance of saving Spock?s life and McCoy?s sanity, they would do whatever it took to do so.
This is the kind of spirit and courage that exist in the hearts and souls of the young men and women serving in defense of this nation and our liberty. I know this to be true, because my son is serving in the military, and he and his fellow defenders of freedom have continually displayed that same spirit and courage. They will tell you in an instant that they do not serve the U.N, They do not serve the government. No, these fine young men and women, THE VERY BEST AND BRIGHTEST serve the American people. Even those people that are too foolish understand why or from what. Even those people who are too self-absorbed to appreciate the sacrifices these fine young men and women have made and continue to make.
It is a point of great sadness to see how B.H.O. and his band of globalist simply kowtow and bow at the alter of the U.N. and thereby spit, no piss into the blood, sweat and tears of our military personnel. That band of socialist elite; who think they know better than we do what is best for us. Well I say to them and their simpering submissive followers in no uncertain terms; that REAL AMERICANS do not need their mommy state to take care of us.
And I promise without fear of contradiction that regardless of who might order us to back down, or what the odds might be against us succeeding, there is quite simply no possibility that REAL AMERICANS are going to sit back and do nothing while B.H.O and his henchmen try to drag this country into what they see as a global socialist utopia. If there is even a one in a trillion chance of saving the freedom and liberty that we love and hold so dear, we will do whatever it takes to do so.
Iron man was always one of my favorite superheroes as a kid. This move brought back all the fun and excitement I would feel whenever I read an Iron Man comic book. This first in what I hope will be a long line of sequels is a redemption story of sorts.
Tony Stark is a brilliant and successful young man who suddenly finds himself the captive of an evil terrorist. On top of that he finds out that someone has been providing this terrorist with weapons he has designed and manufactured. The terrorist want him to provide them with his most recent and powerful non-nuclear weapon design. He pretends to concede to the terrorist?s desires and begins to work along with another brilliant captive. He learns from his fellow prisoner how his work has been subverted and used to kill and enslave thousands.
The two great minds plan their escape, but during the attempt, his new friend reveals that his family has already been killed by the terrorist, and gives his own life to insure that Tony can escape.
Having faced death and seen evil face to face, Tony is a changed man. Wanting to make amends for what he sees as his past sins, he endeavors to use his money and talents for the good of all people, to protect the innocent and to put a stop to the evil men who have misused his creations.
Well cast, well written and well presented, with plenty of action, and some humor thrown in.
This film is said to be based on Shakespeare, "The Tempest". If so, maybe all of Shakespeare writing should be updated into science fiction movies.
Forbidden Planet was released the year I was born, and is the film that introduced Robby the Robot to the world and in so doing created s science fiction icon.
The use of a Theremin to provide the background music (called electronic intonations due to the fact that that perfomers were not members of tthe musicians union) is perfect and the mat paintings used for landscapes and for the power plant deep within the planet are true treasures.
The space cruiser, the Krell lab, and Robby are both abslute works of art.
The cast is wonderful and I really can't find no bad thing to say about this movie.
If you haven't seen this film, I need to ask what planet you have been living on. If you say the Earth, then I can only assume that you do not like science fiction, and therefore you must be some kind of (insert your favorite insult here)
I keep hearing about a remake in the works. If this turns out to be true, I sure hope that they do not screw it up as badly as the remakes of "The War of the Worlds", and "The Day the Earth Stood Still" were screwed up.
I know, I know. This is a silly kids film. But then, I was only a kid when I first saw this movie and fell in love with it. In fact, this is the film that birthed my life long love of robots. Not only was Tobor the coolest robot I had seen up to that time (I did not see Robby, the robot in "Forbidden Planet, until a couple years later), he was also the first robot I had ever seen that was the good guy.
So what if the plot is a bit contrived, this is still a fun film. Especially if you happen to be a young boy (of five or six) back in the early sixties when I first saw it on TV.
If you get a kick out of robots, precocious kids, evil enemy agents, and other B-Movies icons, give this one a chance.
I loved this movie. No it does not have a lot of action. No it does not contain quality scenery or props, or spectacular special effects. And no it will never rise above the status of (at best) a b-movie, cult classic.
What it is, (to me anyway) is a think piece. In fact I consider it a forerunner if Spielberg?s ?A.I.? (which I also loved). In both films, a part of human society has decided that robots are bad and will lead to the destruction of mankind. But in the end, it is the robots that keep mankind (or at least his culture and legacy) alive.
Bothe films parallel the racism in the world today. People who hate human beings for no more reason than the color of their skin, yet without those people of other colors; much of what is good in the world today might not exist.
Okay, I understand why some Isaac Asimov fans did not care for what was done with (or they might say too) some of characters and ideas contained in Asimov's writings. But I loved this film. Personally, the connection to Asimov was only a small part of the draw to this film for me. I just love robots, and there were plenty of them. As usual, Will Smith (Del Spooner) did a great job, as did Bridget Moynahan (Susan Calvin).
The story line may not have been a purely Asmovian construct, but it was interesting (exciting in fact) and it did contained the one thing made most of Asimov?s robot stories work. The question of what happens if something goes wrong and the "Three Laws" don't work. At least not as intended. But then, that is why a smart roboticist should always makes sure that he or she incorporates an easy to use "off switch" into the machine. I know I do. 8^)
I especially liked how Will Smith's character looked beyond the apparent surface benefits that the society he lived in had come to rely upon (in particular the robots), to see how any flaws in the system presented a real danger, if not closely monitored by that society.
Kind of like how our society has come to trust and rely to much on the government, and far to little on what made this nation great in the first place, the individual?s own efforts.
Today too many people are far to willing to let a paternalistic government take care of their perceived needs. And worse than that, they feel entitled to use that government to rob and steel from those that have worked hard, taken risks, and succeeded, to provide for their wants.
One day, those people will find that any government that is big enough to provide for your every want and need, is also strong enough to decide how you will live and what your are allowed to do. Then it will become apparent that it will cost them much more to turn that government off, than all the perceived benefits that they have ever received from that government were worth.
This is a wonderful film. I know that many people didn?t like it. But for the life of me, I don?t really understand why. I have heard it called too dark, to sappy, too confusing, too this, too that?
Well I don't know what these people were expecting, or looking for in the film. But it was everything I was expecting and more. In fact for me, it works on at least two levels.
First, there is the obvious front story. A heart tugging tale of the journey taken by a very childlike robot; who?s only desire to become a real boy so that his mother could love him. Only to learn in the end that she always did love him.
Yes I know, but everyone points out the Pinnochio aspect of this film. I would rather compare it to how so many of us try so hard to become good enough in the eyes of GOD to be loved by him. The thing is, HE already loves us. So much so that he sent his son, Jesus, to pay the price for all of our transgressions, so that we could one day come home to be with HIM. All we have to do is realize and except HIS love.
Second, there is the not so subtle story happening in the background. This is where the film becomes thought provoking. This back story is a close cousin to main storyline of a 1962 film titled "Creation of the Humanoids".
Put a simply as possible; the story goes like this?
Robots have increased in number, and are not only becoming all but indispensable, they are becoming more and more life like, more human. This of course leads to fear and resentment in some people, who take it upon themselves to hate and ?dehumanize? (so to speak) the robots. This dehumanization makes their hatred and cruelty towards the robots more palatable to other humans, many of whom then turn a blind eye to the Flesh Fairs. In the Flesh Fairs, unlicensed robots that have been captured that held in cages are torn to pieces, destroyed with acids, and tortured to the point of shutting down, all for sport and the amusement of the ?Flesh and Blooders (a term I took from the afore mentioned 1962 film).
But in the end, it is the robots that keep the better aspects of humanity and its culture alive, long after mankind has ceased to exist upon the Earth.
It appears obviously, not all humans hold the robots in such distain. If they did, the robots could never have reached such numbers. Nor would the robots at the end of the film have shown such reverence and awe at the memory of the long deceased humanity.
Does anyone else see a parallel to the story of ?The Good Samaritan? (Luke 10:25-37). Too many people know the story but don?t realize that the Samaritans were a hated people. Most Jews of the day would never even speak to a Samaritan, let alone treat them with any kindness. Yet a Samaritan man, when he came upon a Jewish man who had been beaten, robbed and left for dead, stopped to help. The poor victim had been deliberately passed by and ignored by his own people. But the Samaritan, knowing that the man who lay broken and dying in the ditch was Jewish, and probably would never have even considered helping the Samaritan had their situations been reversed, not only treated and bound the wounds of the victim, he brought him to an in and paid for his further care.
In so doing the Samaritan saved the Jewish man?s life, and became an example to the world when Jesus told his story in an effort to teach us all; that all men, even those that who at best would do us no good, and at worst would do us great harm, are our neighbors. And that as much as it lies within us, we are to love and care for them.
A quick side note here?
The Samaritan?s act of kindness was done as a voluntary act and out of love for his neighbor. He was not forced by law or regulation to render aid to the victim. And any so called good that is done not in love, and in accordance with ones own free will amounts to nothing. Government compulsion to give assistance of any kind to others can only lead in the end to anger and distain towards the ones receiving that assistance.
A wonderful adaptation of Tolkien's masterful work of fantasy. The battle between good and evil has never been more effectively portrayed than it is in original written trilogy, and this film and its sequels do those writings great justice. I first watched this film on the midnight (actually it started about an hour before midnight) showing on New Years eve. I could think of no better waty to bring in the new year. I was as totally absorbed by the movie as I was by the original story. The extended cut DVD is even better than the theatre release.
The casting is superb, special effects are great and the cinematography is some of the best I have ever seen. A must see film that has earned all the praise it has received.
As with the first in this trilogy of films, this is a wonderful adaptation of Tolkien's masterful work of fantasy, which does great justice to the original material.
The casting is great, the special effects are wonderful, and I can think of nothing bad to say about this movie. And the extended cut DVD is even better.
A must see film that has earned all the praise it has received.
As with the first two films in this trilogy, this is another wonderful adaptation of Tolkien's work. It deserves every award it was given and all the praise it has received. Like the two previous films trhe casting is superb, but the special effects completely blow away those in the first two films. The extended cut DVD is well worth the extra money. Don't scimp on this purchase.
If you haven't seen this move, or its siblings; I need to ask you WHY on GOD's green Earth NOT? Go out right this moment and rent it, or better yet buy all three films. If you are supposed to work today, you need to call in sick, stay home, make a huge tub or three of popcorn (salt and extra butter on mine please) and watch them in order, one after the other. I cannot think of a better way for a fan of Tolkien's writings, fantasy in general, or great movies to spend a day.
These films belong in every movie lover?s collection.
Come on, you know you love bad b-movies as much as I do. And this is one of the worst. It has it all, cheesy spaceship, even cheesier robot, bad raygun effects, etc. You'll love it.
As is so often the case, the critics are so far off base it is shameful. But then this is not the artsie fartsie type of crap that critics seem to think is so wonderful. Nor is it the kind of left wing propaganda piece that so many of the fools praise and cheer for (despite the lack factual data, or any semblance of truth contained within. Yes I?m talking about the likes of algore and moore).
This is purely a fun film, full of fast paced action, and good old fashion, good verses evil, hero stuff. The bad guys do their damndest to take over and/or destroy the world (Islamo-fascism comes to mind). In response, the good guys stand up and say "Oh hell no!!" and despite a few set backs here and there, they end up kicking the bad guys? asses.
No this is not one of those preachy Hollywood left, "Can't we all just get along" utopian fantasies, in which they try to shove their empty headed, "let's ignore history and pretend that everyone is really a nice guy deep down inside" ideas down your throat.
In fact, the left wing liberal obamantion, representing the "let's just sit down and talk with them so we can work things out" mentality makes a complete fool of himself in this movie. I love how when Hollywood wants to make some real money, it is forced to make movies that uphold and glorify everything it stands in opposition too, while it has to poke fun of the very concepts that it so foolishly clings too,
Now if the left wing idiots in the current administration would take the lesson, then they would do exactly what needs to be done to keep freedom loving people free. What's that you ask? Well it is really quite simple. If north korea and iran want nuclear weapons so badly, then the good old United States of American should "DROP" a couple off for them 8^)
Still the best of all of the body snatcher films. As much as I like the 1978 remake, (and I really do like it) this is and will prabably always be my favorite version.
Just suppose for a moment that it would be possible to store tens of thousands of pounds of steam pressure for an almost unlimited amount of time in a container about the size of a basketball. Then steam would become the ultimate power source.
If you like adventure and intrigue, with a bit of science fantasy thrown in, then check this film out. Even if you do not typically like Japanese anime, I suspect you will probably still like this movie.
Even if it is only for historic reasons, this is a must see film for all George Lucas fans. Especially those who already love his latter full length, proffesional production of the story titled simply "THX 1138".
It is impossible for me to pick a "FAVORITE" film (or TV show as the case may be) because it changes with my mood, or what kind of day I've had or just because... So I decided to just put together a small list of movies that I have (or want to have) in my collection. Believe me, this is only a microscopic sampling of the films I love to watch. I could easily double, triple and even quadruple the size of this list and still hardly scratch the surface.
