Southland Tales 2006,  R)
Southland Tales
Loved it. One of my new faves. Don't know how this one slipped passed me when it was at theaters. If you saw this and liked it check out the +300 page graphic novel, also written by Richard Kelly. It covers chapters 1-3, and explains a lot for those who had trouble understanding what was going on. I didn't.The movie is chapters 4-6. I see this movie as a tribute to three of my favorite directors: David Lynch, Terry Gilliam, and Alex Cox.
2
Grindhouse 2007,  R)
Grindhouse
Amazing.

Planet Terror is bloody as any movie I can recall and it is very funny too. I think it's the best I have seen from Robert Rodriguez so far, and I have seen everything he has done, with the exception of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. This film is up there with Sin City.

Deathproof starts off just a little slow and it's a bit dialogue heavy but I have come to expect that from Quentin Tarantino. Once it gets going though, there is no slowing down. Very funny also.

The fake trailers for non-existent movies were also entertaining. Maybe they will actually make films out of these someday. I would love to see "Machete". "Thanksgiving" looks thouroughly disgusting and worth watching if it was ever made into a real flick. "Don't" was just a funny trailer, and "Werewolf Women of the SS" would be fun to see too.

GRINDHOUSE was an instant classic. Great from beginning to end. I really feel I got my moneys worth.

Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)
Pan's Labyrinth
Magnificent film. I can't stress enough how brilliant and spellbinding this film is. It became and instant favorite of mine. I was captivated from start to finish. I don't think 2 hours ever went by faster for me. I just didn't want it to end. It has all the elements that I love in a movie, most of all a great story, and besides that it looked incredible. This is the kind of movie I keep hoping to see from Clive Barker instead of most of the crap he has his name attached to as an executive producer. Guillermo del Toro really outdid himself writing and directing this. Definitely one of the best films of 2006 if not the best.
4
Tideland 2005,  R)
Tideland
As Terry Gilliam himself says at the beginning, "Many of you will not like this film... but many of you will... And some just wont know what to think...".

I loved it. I thought it was amazing in it's story and it's photography and effects and it's performances. I found it to be very original.

I could see why some people wouldn't like it but then I would think that these same people aren't taking Gilliam's advice and trying to view it through the eyes of a child.

The entire cast was great but Jodelle Ferland as Jeliza-Rose was incredible at only 9+1/2 years old. Brendan Fletcher as Dickens is worth mentioning as well.

All of Gilliam's movies are a bit disturbing, as is this one, but it is wonderful and charming as well. It really is a marvelous film. One of Gilliam's best.

"...like a cross between Alice in Wonderland and Psycho".

Hero 2002,  PG-13)
Hero
Very good. Wonderful story and beautifully filmed. Outstanding cast. Heartbreaking. Maggie Cheung is simply stunning.
6
Volver 2006,  R)
Volver
Great film. Just quirky enough for my tastes. Penelope Cruz looked amazing and gave a tremendous performance. All the actors did a fine job. Not that I have seen everything Almodóvar has done, but what I have seen of his work has always impressed me. I think he is a brilliant film maker.
7
Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower) 2006,  R)
Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower)

Everyone did a fine job. I look forward to seeing many more films from Zhang Yimou. He never ceases to keep me entertained and interested.

22
Buffalo 66 1998,  R)
Buffalo 66
Really good. Vincent Gallo wrote, directed, stars in, and even wrote some of the music. It's just a hell of an effort on his part. Plus the main character in the movie shares my birthday, Dec 26, just not the same year. I loved Christina Ricci in this film, but the entire cast is great.

24
The U.S. vs. John Lennon 2006,  PG-13)
The U.S. vs. John Lennon
Oh yeah. Great documentary. This one should have been nominated for best doc in my opinion. Some really good old interviews and clips. It's a good lookat a certain point of US history. It is also something to see in how it fits in the current times.

The world still loves John. I wish he was sstill here physically, but his music and thoughts live on. PEACE.
25
Cannibal! The Musical (Alferd Packer: The Musical) 1996,  R)
Cannibal! The Musical (Alferd Packer: The Musical)
Really low budget, but absolutely hilarious, and the music is great!! Very catchy tunes. Trey Parker is a genius. I would like to see him remake this with a bigger budget, but then again it's already done and the movie is just fine how it is.

O Lucky Man! 1973,  R)

Very surreal. Comic yet sometmes also disturbing look at society. Malcolm McDowell shines in this post-Clockwork Orange film. There are some very good ideas here. Perhaps a bit long for some, but still a damn fine movie. Pretty good music too.

"What's there to smile about?"
Great ending.

Kevin Smith's 1st, and probably best, movie. Low budget and B&W, but the dialogue is classic.
41
Clerks II 2006,  R)
Clerks II
Rude, disgusting, and hilarious! Better than I had hoped for. I like all of Kevin Smith's movies, even the ones no one else likes (like Jersey Girl). Clerks II has to be one of my favorites from him. It was good to see the old characters back and some new ones too. Especially Rosario Dawson. 1st time I can recall them coughing up the bucks for a decent soundtrack too. Songs from Talking Heads, Smashing Pumpkins, Jackson 5, to name a few... and Samantha Fox's Naughty Girls Need Love Too at a very funny moment.
