Breakfast on Pluto
One of my favourite films of the year. Murphy deserves an Oscar for his powerful central performance in an inspiring, moving, funny and life-affirming tale of the indomitable spirit of glorious non-comformity.

The World's Fastest Indian
A truly life-affirming movie with one of Hopkin's greatest performances.
4
Hard Candy 2005,  R)
Hard Candy
One of the most harrowing films I've ever seen. The script is brilliantly structured and very intelligent. And the performances are superb, especially from Ellen Page. This movie should make her a star.
5
Thank You For Smoking 2005,  R)
Thank You For Smoking
A witty and intelligent black comedy. it is always entertaining and often hilarious.
6
Last Train to Freo 2006,  Unrated)
Last Train to Freo
A powerful five-handed psychodrama told in real time on one set. As you would imagine, the plot is rather artificially packed with secrets to be revealed, but view it as a cathartic exercise rather than a realistic drama and this hardly matters. One of the best of a very good year in Australian cinema.
7
The New World 2005,  PG-13)
The New World
A film of great beauty.
8
Caterpillar Wish 2006,  Unrated)
Caterpillar Wish
A small, quiet film with richly drawn characters and an involving story.
9
Jindabyne 2006,  R)
Jindabyne
Ray Lawrence has take the seed of Raymond Carver's famous story "Too Much Water Too Close to Home" (previously filmed as part of Robert Altman's "Short Cuts") and turned it into a powerful exploration of sex and race relations in Australia.
