A true gem of Chinese cinema. Leslie Cheung's top performance ever, and Gong Li is undeniably impressive. The way Leslie Cheung uses his body and how he alters his voice to reflect Dieyi's rather feminine character is incredible. We also get a chance to see You Ge, another very talented actor. My favorite movie of all times. I'm pretty sure nothing can surpass this one.
One of the early movies that brought Gong Li under the spotlight. She displays all her acting talent. "San tai tai" He Sai Fei's performance is also very much noticeable.
An inspired Al Pacino accompanied by a whole cast of talented actors, seeking to reveal how Shakespeare is perceived in the American society along with an intense exploration of the play Richard III. We get a chance to see Al Pacino the stage actor, rather than the usual gangster type of character.
Very touching story, showing that deceit does not always come from bad intentions. Every character is so real, even including Zhao's "wen nuan" girlfriend and her son. There were moments that made me laugh, and moments that brought tears to my eyes, so I say this movie is definitely worth watching.
The movie begins with the wonderful theme song, sung by Leslie Cheung himself. It is an epic Chinese story ornamented with a well adjusted dose of humor. The nocturnal sequences, the silk robes and colors are very well made.
