i loved this. i saw several aspects of Chinese culture that were all too familiar. The father in here is solemnly complexed yet at the same time, acts as the reluctant 'comic relief'. i was a little shocked to see Jacqueline Kim. XENA fans should recognize Kim as she appeared in the show playing (one of) Xena's interest. It's a shame her character was straight, or else she would have hit the nail as a disillusioned, LESBIAN career woman. like I said, it's a shame. The whole dangerous pranking thing between Katie and her little boyfriend Simon is oddly adorable and gives a whole new meaning to the term "Love/hate relationship". And now, imo the best part of the movie, is the two new lovers, Julie and Mia. While their story plot was very typical and slightly monotonous, I enjoyed it most. Of course, it'll be so great if/when parents walk in on their kids getting it on with their lovers and accept their homosexuality. That would make coming out so much easily. But then again, in the real world, it's usually and ironically much more melodramatic.
I don't know where to begin with this. First, it brings up modern issues like AIDS and poverty. Jonathan Larson deserves to be worshiped like a god. Totally amazing soundtrack. I loved 'Tango: Maureen', 'Take me or leave me' and 'Over the Moon'! IDINA IS LOVE.
Christian Bale is such a little god here. he had talent so raw... it really tells you he's a great child actor and that he'll definitely do greater movies when he matures... and look at him now... Miranda Richardson had a presence throughout the film; her character's death was inevitable and her performce, to me, extremely haunting. Ben Stiller's character was such an ass. Annoying.
I must say I didn't expect myself to enjoy this as much as I do. Kathy Bates was the psychotic comic relief in contrast to Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker's darker times. Like many other fellow fans, I was especially disappointed that the film did not allow a small hint where the love between Idgie and Ruth was interpreted as more than platonic or sisterly. Fannie Flagg's novel clearly depicts what the film intentionally omitted, so for anyone who wants the action, we got to hit the books.
beautiful. it's such a modern fairytale with its happy ending. i think that the movie opted for the underlying message - 'Just two people falling in love... Both who happen to be women'. it's written beautifully.
brad pitt and tom cruise when they were still 'faithful'. LMAO. Cruise was at his best in this one. i think its one of the best vamp movies/books yet. i absolutely adore Rice!
bullock and kidman in this chick flick was great. storyline about the sisters and their family beliefs was too. but did not offer much display of the hokus pokus and spellcraft.
this movie is probably the best chinese action flick yet. although it has been termed as Asia's answer to Charlie's Angels, i feel that is not true as both movies are very different, going in their own directions.
this one simply rocked my world. (and i don't just mean the soundtrack.) this is yet another film which causes me to find myself in love with Ledger each time i watch it. all over again.
Sandra Bullock kept me laughing the whole time with her stunning performance as the hilarious screw-up turned beauty queen; this may just be her best yet.
I think this could have been on the same level of awesomeness as Queen of the Damned, if only it had stuck to vampires only. Underworld's death dealers/vampires like Selene were way cooler. Although I think Kate Beckinsale looks good pale and tanned. My eyes needed some time to adjust to light after the movie ended. Lol.
i love the whole storyline: guy fights evil blah blah, helps damsel in distress, saves e world and gets cured of sickness in de meantime. COOL. loved the special effects. weisz was CUTE!!
loved this. but it'll kinda remind you of all the Bond movies as Pierce Brosnan practically reprises his role here as a smart-alecky rich guy who's got cool moves. except here, you're supposed to think he's on the wrong side of the law. has several twists, the ending was so sweet.
The title is aptly named. This is just a sweet sweet lesbian movie that has a happily-ever-after. I loved that this brings up many social issues like peer pressure, racism and homophobia. Also, great performance by Laurel Holloman. She looks good and is convincing as butch teen, with short hair and all.
The Truth About Jane is an inspiring story about how a young girl begins to discover the pains of her sexuality and her family's gradual coming to gripes with it. I like how the movie ended with an irony with Jane commenting on how far her mother has grown and also Jane's teacher's own subtle coming-out. i'm impressed by Kelly Rowan, Ellen Muth and Stockard Channing's performances. Channing was at her best playing the uptight maternal figure. I hope we see more of Ellen Muth in similar movie roles such as this. Kelly Rowan should really stick to movies with more colorful roles like this instead of the dreary dull mother Kirsten she played in the O.C.
This movie tells you that babies are intelligent and behind those silly grins, they are secretly plotting some genius, foolproof escape/take-over-the-world plan. Wow. And also, after this movie, I am convinced that all babies are the same; lethally cute.
after listening to the commentary by Marc Forster and his team, i had much more insight and it altered my initial perception of the film. i must say that it is not merely a film, but an extraordinary masterpiece that was layered with all the wonderful intricate details. the film, as one would realise at the end of it, brings one into a world where reality is not as it appears to be and identity lines may blur. we step into a realm and take a peek into the inner workings of Henry Letham's mind as he begins the passage towards death. thus everything in the movie is shown as how the dying Letham would perceive it. Ryan Gosling is amazing in here.
Bernadette Peters was so fcking hilarious that i laughed almost during every one of her scenes. but then there's those scenes where her character becomes strong for her partner when she gets breast cancer. it's so moving. and the kid's acting was so.. spot-on!
I feel that this movie has more depth than most people give it credit for. As far as i am concerned, Sarah Michelle Gellar fit perfectly for the role as sultry seductress Kathryn while ex Mr. Witherspoon Ryan Phillippe did a more or less convincing job of his role as Sebastian. However, Witherspoon's was just plain dull. The ending scene with Witherspoon in Sebastian's fab car and journal is a telling hint at whether or not her intentions are as pure as how she portrays herself to be.
Seriously, with those 3 leading ladies, how can you possibly go wrong? The three stories were a perfect blend of destruction and angst. It really showcased each actor and their individual acting styles. One of my favourite movies.
This just warms my feminist heart. I can't imagine going through all that Charlize Theron's character went through. She had to defend herself in the workplace and in court. Charlize Theron was amazing. I loved the love-hate relationship between her character and her son, even though that boy can't act for shit. Frances McDormand was great too.
Annette Bening is wonderfully depressing as the delusional, psychotic, struggling poetess mother who can't get a grip on life like she can't on anything else; marriage, motherhood, rejection etc. I was surprised to see Kristin Chenoweth in here, though just a bit role, it was refreshing. as Annette Bening's lesbian lover. she was hysterical. watching her gaying it up makes me go gaga all over again.
I loved the whole blurring of gender lines. It makes me wonder what would it be like to live in such a world. I often think about Aristophanes' speech in Plato's Symposium.
