  CultofMovies's Rating My Rating
1
The Godfather 1972,  R)
The Godfather
This is the start of one of the best trilogies in cinema history. My favorite of the trilogy, this film depicts the different mafias of America and the corrupted law enforcement system here. Al Pacino acts the part great, Marlon Brando is spectacular. A true gangster film classic.
2
Schindler's List 1993,  R)
Schindler's List
Spielberg's masterpiece!
3
Taxi Driver 1976,  R)
Taxi Driver
A true Scorsese masterpiece! "Taxi Driver" is about a lonely taxi driver man called Travis Bickle, played brilliantly by Robert DeNiro, who is sick and tired of the "scum" walking the streets of New York. "God's Lonely Man" lives an empty life... this film's dark shots play a perfect mood for this emotional story. This film is a classic, also with its famous "You talkin' to me??" scene.

I finally got to own this film on DVD.... I've been wanting to buy this film for quite a while now but never could get hold of it, now that the special CE came out all I can say is... this edition is amazing! All it needs is a comentary by Scorsese himself, though it does have one from the screenwriter which is great also. The special features are amazing and worth the price of the DVD. It was worth it waiting for this edition to come out. Scorsese is a genius! A+ fuckin' plus!
4
The Godfather, Part II 1974,  R)
The Godfather, Part II
I know everyone has already said this, but... this really is one of the best sequels EVER made! De Niro and Pacino do spectacular performances. Not as good as the first, yet still amazing!
5
GoodFellas 1990,  R)
GoodFellas
One of the best gangster films in cinema history, Scorsese depicts the life of the past gangsters very realistically. Pesci was absolutely hilarious in this film, appearing in awesome memorable scenes that will be remembered always. Liotta and De Niro were great as well, but this film was Pesci's... he was just awesome! Marty really shined on this one.
6
Raging Bull 1980,  R)
Raging Bull
Excellent performance by De Niro, Pesci, Moriarty... but most importantly Robert De Niro. He plays the part of Jake La Motta extremely well, one of the best performances ever. Scorsese did an excellent job in this film. The editing is just as wonderful also.
Martin Scorsese is really one of the best directors out there today... I can't believe he didn't get an Oscar for this.
7
The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
One of the best films I have laid my eyes on. Truly inspiring... that teaches us a great deal in the human spirit. Great achievement in cinema history.
8
Pulp Fiction 1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
Damn, what a f'cking classic. Pulp Fiction is simply... Pulp Fiction. No other words to describe it. One of Quentin Tarantino's best works. This star-packed movie is definitely not a miss for any film buff out there. Who hasn't seen it? Samuel L. Jackson should have received the Oscar for this film... wow. The dialogue drives this movie forward, you can quote almost anything.
"Bitch, be cool!"
9
Saving Private Ryan 1998,  R)
Saving Private Ryan
One of Spielberg's best creations!
10
Memento 2000,  R)
Memento
Definitely a modern day masterpiece from the 2000's. "Memento" is one of the most intelligent movies you will ever see. Christopher Nolan brings you a film that has been structured in a way that confuses the audience. There are parts that are backwards and parts that are forwards, requiring you to think while watching the movie. Without turning on your brain, you will be lost throughout the film and it would be hard to come back and understand. Every scene is important. Enjoy the twisted ride and be rewarded by this film's excellence! This film brings a new spice to thrillers. Great acting and a great screenplay. One of my favorite movies, I recommend this movie to anyone with a brain. A+!!
11
No Country for Old Men 2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
Simply one of the top films of 2007! This film blew my mind away. The Coen Brothers have created an amazing adaptation from the novel by Cormac McCarthy. I haven't read the novel (yet), but I sure hope that it's even better than the film. This film is not for everyone to get, since the ending is very abrupt though brilliant. The ending was perfect for this movie but not everyone gets it. Javier Bardem gave an excellent performce as the menacing Anton Chigurh a.k.a Death. Everytime he was on, he sent chills. Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Broslin gave memorable performances as well, but not like Bardem. See this Coen's adaptation. You will not regret to watch it.
12
A Clockwork Orange 1971,  R)
13
The Departed 2006,  R)
The Departed
Martin Scorsese has shown us once again what spectacular film making is. This movie was pure genious work. Even though it's a remake of "Infernal Affairs", it never loses its touch. Amazing! Full with twists within twists with a shocking ending you couldn't have imagined. I still can't stop talking about the plot. In my opinion, this is the BEST film of 2006. Scorsese deserves his long awaited Oscar... if he doesn't win for Best Director, well... the Oscars are worthless anyway. 5 stars!
14
The Pianist 2002,  R)
The Pianist
Not a miss!! Polanski = Awesometaski?
15
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2003,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Greatest of the trilogy!
16
Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)
Pan's Labyrinth
DEFINATELY! one of the best films of 2006 I have seen. Guillermo del Torro captures the setting wonderfully. The gore in this movie sets the tone perfect for the scenes to come, the level of darkness is adequate. "El Laberinto Del Fauno" should definately be a contender for an Oscar in the foreign film category.
A MUST SEE!!!
17
2001: A Space Odyssey 1968,  G)
18
Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
One of David Fincher's best flicks! Fight Club is pure awesomeness. Genius and never dull. It's a psychedelic trip you will never forget with the twist ending. The cast is top-notch. Edward Norton is amazing, as always. Brad Pitt is great as Tyler so is Helena Bonham Carter. All great performances. Even Meat Loaf surprised me. Amazing movie, one of my favorites.
"The first rule of Fight Club is - you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is - you DO NOT talk about Fight Club!" - Tyler Durden
19
Life Is Beautiful (La Vita è bella) 1997,  PG-13)
Life Is Beautiful (La Vita è bella)
Meraviglioso!!
20
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo.) 1966,  R)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo.)
One of the best westerns in cinema history. Sergio Leone created a magnificente western masterpiece. Even thought it was shot and made in Italy, this film never loses the touch of the good, the bad, and the ugly western.

This film also includes one of the most famous and unforgettable scores ever composed on a film. Ennio Morricone is a true genious. Don't forget about the badass Clint Eastwood!
21
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The star of the spellbinding trilogy!
22
Amores Perros 2000,  R)
Amores Perros
Depicts the different lifes of three individuals after one accident... showing the hardships people go through in life. A great Mexican film.
23
Apocalypse Now 1979,  R)
Apocalypse Now
Francis Ford Coppola's view on the Vietnam war with Apocalypse Now is horrifyingly well made and acted. Marlon Brando plays the crazed ex American colonel who now inhabits Vietnam with its citizens treating him like royalty. He's not in much of the film, but he is still brilliant and shocking. Martin Sheen is excellent, but Robert Duvall steals the show. He deserved an Oscar for his role in this film. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning." Genius! One of my favorites, Apocalypse Now will not disappoint. Try to watch the theatrical version though, many don't like the redux version.
24
Children of Men 2006,  R)
Children of Men
Alfonso Cuarón proves yet again what he is capable of doing. This man is a true genius as a director. His direction for "Children of Men" was incredible. This SciFi film acts in "first-person", making us feel like we are really there next to Clive Owen. Depressing film, yet wonderful... it has one of the best battle sequences I've ever seen (next to Saving Private Ryan). Not everyone will like it in my opinion (I thought it was great). I hoped this film would get an Oscar for its beautiful cinematography, but it didn't. It truly deserved it.
25
Citizen Kane 1941,  PG)
Citizen Kane
What better word to describe this film than, "Rosebud..."
Orson Welles powerful film Citizen Kane has played a major influence on almost every film released after 1941.
Considered by many the best movie ever, this masterpiece is definitely a must see. All throughout the movie, we're trying to find out who the mysterious Rosebud is. When we find out who it was, you'll be astonished. Brilliant!
26
Full Metal Jacket 1987,  R)
Full Metal Jacket
Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket is separated into different segments. My favorite being the Boot Camp one. This film depicts realistically the horrors the war on Vietnam brought to the troops... Kubrick style. Check it out, it's great!
27
There Will Be Blood 2007,  R)
There Will Be Blood
"I have abandoned my child! I've abandoned my child! I've abandoned my boy..." God, what an amazing performance by Daniel Day Lewis. He definitely deserved the Oscar he won for his portrayal of Daniel Plainview. Another amazing performance in this film was Paul Dano. His performance was brilliant, not as great as DDL, but still pretty good. I was left speechless after the viewing of this film, "There Will Be Blood". This film is phenomenal. I have to buy it as soon as possible on DVD. Paul Thomas Anderson has made another epic film. I will gladly watch his future films. The cinematography in "There Will Be Blood" is beautiful and the musical score is out of this world. Very eerie and strange than your everyday musical score. I loved it. I know this film will be remembered in the years to come, I will sure remember it. It will be in many top film lists of all time in the years to come. We just have to let it sink in.
28
The Green Mile 1999,  R)
The Green Mile
Deeply moving tale about the injustice the prison system might bring. Frank Darabont's take on the novel by Stephen King, The Green Mile, is beautiful and touching. My second favorite Frank Darabont film, right after The Shawshank Redemption. Michael Clarke Duncan gave an excellent performance. This man can clearly act brilliantly, but these days he's been choosing poor film roles. Tom Hanks? Great as always. I didn't cry on this film, but it is definitely one of the saddest movies I have seen in my short life. Great film to watch on an evening.
29
Casino 1995,  R)
Casino
Martin Scorsese. What more do you want? Oh yeah, Robert de Niro and Joe Pesci.
Casino is "fucking" brilliant! Just watch the famous scene where Pesci and De Niro are talking in the desert. The script for this film is great. Best use of the word 'f*ck' that I've ever seen before. Also, Sharon Stone is not a waste in this one.
30
Dog Day Afternoon 1975,  R)
Dog Day Afternoon
"ATTICA! ATTICA!!!" - Sonny Wortzik
Dog Day Afternoon is a bank heist film with cops and guns... but not your typical average bank heist film with cops and guns. This one is brilliant. One of Al Pacino's best performances after The Godfather: Part 2. John Cazale is amazing, it's a shame he died so soon. He was an amazing actor. Dog Day Afternoon is worth renting, watch it. Really great film.
31
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
"Holy amazing movie, Batman!" - Robin (1960)

Wow... I'm speechless. What else is there to say? Utterly perfect. Everything expected from this film is accomplished. Believe all the hype. Bravo Christopher Nolan, Bravo! You have just accomplished to create the best superhero movie imaginable. Wait, is this film even classified in the superhero genre? Not to me. This film takes "superhero" to a hole new level.

The Dark Knight manages to surpass Batman Begins in every level imaginable. The characters in this film are all portrayed amazing. All the buzz surrounding the late Heath Ledger about a possible Oscar nod is a great probability chance. Some scenes he was in chilled you to the bone, others he was horrifyingly hilarious. He is THE Joker... say goodbye to Jack Nicholson's Joker. Though it's a shame of the fate he had... this film would have risen him a lot.
Other amazing performances are created by Aaron Eckhart, he completely shines as Harvey "Two Face" Dent. This film shows the rise and the fall of a hero by the portrayal of Dent.
"You Either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" - Harvey Dent
This is the quote to define this film in one sentence.
Christian Bale replays his role as Bruce Wayne and Batman amazing as well. He still is the best Batman I have seen. This film is summed up by three characters. The one who comes out on top from these three in The Dark Knight clearly is Heath Ledger. Don't forget about other great performances by Gary Oldman, Maggie Gyllenhaal (tremendous improvement from Katie Holmes), Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine.

This is my second favorite film released in 2008 so far (the other being Wall-E). The Dark Knight is a way better film than Iron Man was, in my opinion (and that was considered the best comic book movie of all time). Now that this one has been released, in my opinion, it should claim that top spot previously held by Iron Man.
Don't expect to go to this film as a Batman movie for the kids, it is not. Leave those to the first four Batman movies. This one takes a huge step from the typical superhero genre and takes it up another notch. Compare this with Heat and The Departed, even The Godfather: Part II (one of my favorite movies). Please don't compare this with the silly Batman and Robin and Batman Forever, they are completely different, other than sharing similar characters. Those movies were horrible.
This film won't disappoint. My expectation were way high before watching it, and they were met. An amazing piece of entertainment. One of this year's best, I can tell. Greatly recommended.
32
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 2002,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Part of one of the greatest trilogies n the universe!
33
Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2002,  R)
Cidade de Deus (City of God)
What an awesome movie this is. Instant classic! I was finally able to watch the film Cidade de Deus by Fernando Meirelles last night in all it's glory and wow... what an amazing film. I was left speechless at the end. The dangerous "City of God" in Brazil is filled with brutal life and tragic end. This film was portrayed very realistically that sometimes it seems as if it were a documentary. The cast is phenomenal, amazing performances by all. "Cidade de Deus" what more can I say about it? Watch it as soon as possible. You're missing out if you haven't seen it. I need to get this film on DVD as soon as possible. A+!
34
Slumdog Millionaire 2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire is one for the ages. This film is incredible. From start to finish, I was hooked all throughout. A love story that won't end up in making you feel sick like most do nowadays.
The musical score is amazing in this movie. The acting is great, especially the small children. I heard the children were really from the slums of India... they must have a great future ahead of them. The cinematography is amazing as well...
I think this film will take the Best Picture and Best Director award from the Academy Awards... I still got to see Frost/Nixon, and Milk... but I can tell this one will win it all.

Recommended to everyone.
35
Batman Begins 2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
Batman Begins is definitely the best Batman movie I have seen. I've been a Batman fan ever since I was born, and this film was perfect for me at the time it came out back in summer 2005. Christopher Nolan reinvented the franchise in a realistic way. Cinematically, this film is amazing. In my opinion, it is not even considered a "superhero" movie, but a drama/thriller.
Christian Bale IS Batman. No more Batnipples, no more Clooney. Goodbye Joel Schumacher, here comes Christopher Nolan.
I can't wait for The Dark Knight!
36
Glory 1989,  R)
Glory
Wonderful!!
37
Braveheart 1995,  R)
Braveheart
Outstanding! A true Mel Gibson film!
38
Forrest Gump 1994,  PG-13)
Forrest Gump
One of Tom Hank's best performances!!
39
Jaws 1975,  PG)
Jaws
One of the greatest terrors in cinema history!
40
The Deer Hunter 1978,  R)
The Deer Hunter
The Deer Hunter is a very realistic portrayal of the Vietnam war and what it brought to its veterans. Michael Cimino's best film, in my opinion. Deserving the Oscars it got. Christopher Walken is amazing in this film, his scenes were portrayed to cause terror to the audience. The Russian Roulette scene... wow, amazing. Clearly one of the best scenes in cinema. The Deer Hunter had amazing performances all throughout, including Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, John Cazale, and Christopher Walken.
41
Heat 1995,  R)
Heat
Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in the same movie? Are you serious? Yes, I am very serious. Michael Mann's Heat is a great American film. Once you see the infamous gun fight on the street, you'll realize this is pure genius! Perfect cast, and it has two of my favorite actors.
42
On the Waterfront 1954,  Unrated)
43
3:10 to Yuma 2007,  R)
3:10 to Yuma
Westerns are finally back! This movie proves it! Amazing film with amazing performances. I have not seen the original (plan to though), but this film sure is a great remake. Crowe and Bale blend in so well with their characters that you may even guess that they're from the Western days. Ben Foster plays the total badass, he fit the part so well. The cinematography in this film is breathless. Beautiful. This should have had more nods in the Academy Awards but oh well... truly an amazing picture that I had to buy after I saw it. I deeply recommend it!
44
The Wrestler 2008,  R)
The Wrestler
*Review being written as soon as possible!

Wow, I saw this film a long time and I still haven't written the review? Me and my procrastination... well... here it goes:

Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler is a moving film about the life of Randy "The Ram" Robinson. How he lost the people he cherished due to his passion and how he got weaken by it.
Mickey Rourke's performance is one for the books. It's fucking amazing. The best, in my opinion, from 2008. The Oscar was his... though, I can't judge since I haven't seen Sean Penn's performance in Milk... yet, I still think the Oscar was for Rourke. Marisa Tomei's performance is great as well as a mother who has to care for her child by being a stripper. The other supporting cast is great as well, like Evan Rachel Wood playing The Ram's daughter.
The Wrestler is in my list of top films from 2008... it's a shame it did not get recognized by the Academy.
This film will be remembered for as long as we can remember.
45
Reservoir Dogs 1992,  R)
46
A Beautiful Mind 2001,  PG-13)
A Beautiful Mind
One of Ron Howerd's best works of art!
47
Gladiator 2000,  R)
Gladiator
If Russell Crowe stars in it... then it's great!
48
The Untouchables 1987,  R)
49
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 2004,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
My personal favorite of the series. Alfonso Cuaron has proven that he can save a franchise with a fitting style, mood, and pace. The previous two films (Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets) were... "good"... they just followed the book straight. That didn't work out really well. The film has to stand on its own two feet and still be faithful to the book. Prisoner of Azkaban did just that. Cuaron made a spectacular HP film with stunning cinematography and visual effects... the mood was perfect for this film. Deliciously dark. This film has made the next Potter films be a little loose to the books, making better adaptations than what Chris Columbus had originally planned. Clearly, the third is the better movie of the four HP movies at the moment. I hope "Order of the Phoenix" is as good as this... even better.
50
Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1974,  PG)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Laugh-out-loud comedy from start to finish! I couldn't stop laughing, really. These guys were/are amazing. To write such a piece of work requires talent... these guys have this "talent". Yes, it is stupid... stupidly intelligent. The ending was hilarious... nobody would have expected an ending so... unexpected. Haha, just thinking about it makes me laugh. A comedy classic! Watch this film if you still haven't seen it. Ridiculously histerical!
51
Toy Story 1995,  G)
Toy Story
Marked the beginning of animated CGI movies.
52
Ratatouille 2007,  G)
Ratatouille
I haven't enjoyed an animated movie this much in a long... long time. This movie is fantastic. The storyline is amazingly great, filled with pure brilliance, imagination, and wit. Brad Bird has outdone himself in this one. Even better than "The Incredibles" and "The Iron Giant", and those films were amazing as well. Pixar has proved us again and again that they are the masters in modern-day animation. They haven't failed... yet. Their weakest film (IMO) is "Cars", though it was still good. Peter O' Toole's voice of Anton Ego was amazing... sent shivers down my spine on one of the last scenes where he was reading his "critique" on the restaurant. Simply great! Even better than "Finding Nemo". I definately will buy this movie when it comes out. It's right next to "Toy Story" in being my favorite animated movie. I can't wait for next year to see the next big screen Pixar film, "Wall-E". I bet it'll be spectacular! Watch this film, you won't be disappointed.
53
WALL-E 2008,  G)
WALL-E
Pixar has yet to let me down. Their newest film, Wall-E, proves that they're the leading producer of great quality films. All of their films are amazing, even Cars, which is my least favorite.
This film is stunning. Since the beginning, it takes hold of you all the way throughout the end of the film. Depicting morals that are clearly affecting us today, Wall-E will make you realize about certain events taking hold of our world. It's philosophical even, I noticed it throughout the film. Children will feel lost in this film, as they wouldn't understand the issues, but they will be happy just by seeing Wall-E the robot. All the kids in my theater loved Wall-E, and most were crying when *SPOILERS* Wall-E was dying.*END SPOILERS* The audience will get really attached to the characters. In the beginning their is no dialogue, but it works. Pixar took the risk, and it ended up being a great success.
Pixar has yet to fail me. This movie has made it to my favorites list, it is that amazing. Some will not like it because of its dark issues. It's no Kung Fu Panda, were the funniness is in your face all the time.
Wall-E is a beautiful piece of work, the visuals are breathtaking. Andrew Stanton, who directed Finding Nemo, knows what he's doing. Watch this film, you will not regret it. A+
54
Apocalypto 2006,  R)
Apocalypto
Mel Gibson delivers us, yet again, with another tremendous piece of work. "Apocalypto" is an intense, action-packed movie with a realistic portrayal of the Mayan civilization. Yes, the movie has blood and violence... but that doesn't stop it from being excellent. This is one of the best films I've seen this year, no doubt about that. Thank you once again Mel Gibson for showing how good cinema is suppose to be.
55
The Matrix 1999,  R)
56
Sin City 2005,  R)
57
Jurassic Park 1993,  PG-13)
Jurassic Park
Spielberg Masterpiece!
58
The Mist 2007,  R)
The Mist
Frank Darabont has done it once again. "The Mist" delivers a great quality film from the start to the end. An amazing film. Darabont has adapted another Stephen King piece and made a great film out of it. This movie is shocking, its ending will send a punch to you and shake you all over. A great twist. You'll leave the theater feeling a terrible remorse. See it to believe it. Marcia Gay Harden's performance will make you hate her forever. She portrayed her role perfectly.

"The Mist" is right next to "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile" in cinematically delivering a great movie. Yes, it needs better special effects, but that doesn't stop this film from being up there. Certainly one of the best films of 2007, in my opinion.
