The Fisher King 1991,  R)
The Fisher King
My favourite movie of all time - no competition. If you know anything about the original mythology you'd know how amazingly clever this film is. It's many layers deal brilliantly with the dangers of pride and the healing that comes with forgiveness. Fantastic performances, beautifully shot - brilliant movie.
2
Glory 1989,  R)
Glory
If I could, I would give this movie a hundred stars. The acting is astounding, and the film tells the story without pulling any punches. The scene of the night before they go into the final battle and face certain death is probably my favourite scene ever - it's so moving. Love this film and everyone should see it.
3
The Breakfast Club 1985,  R)
The Breakfast Club
Genius. All other teen movies only wish they could be as good as this film. First movie I ever fell in love with.
4
Empire Records 1995,  PG-13)
Empire Records
In my mind, the only main contender to the throne for best teen movie ever - just pipped to the post by The Breakfast Club. Inspired stuff, brilliant lines and Anthony La Paglia - one of the best character actors around. What more do you want? Oh yeah - a kick-ass soundtrack. Check. Not too impressed with the Director's cut DVD version though. If you want to see this film I recommend the original cut.
5
Guys and Dolls 1955,  Unrated)
Guys and Dolls
My favourite musical. So funny and the lines are delivered perfectly.
6
Double Indemnity 1944,  Unrated)
Double Indemnity
Best example of the film noir genre around. Barbara Stanwyck is a movie legend and could teach a few modern-day actresses a thing or two about screen presence. Love this movie.
7
Jarhead 2005,  R)
Jarhead
Why has this film not got more critical acclaim? Beautifully shot, extremely well acted, deals with important issues but never ever dull. I LOVED IT.
8
X-Men 2000,  PG-13)
9
X2: X-Men United 2003,  PG-13)
X2: X-Men United
I saw this film three times in two weeks at the cinema and would quite happily sit through it again. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! The only let down is Storm - they keep trying to make the character more interesting by changing her haircut but she's still dull as ditchwater.
10
Singin' in the Rain 1952,  G)
Singin' in the Rain
Some of the most memorable scenes from the history of movie musicals are in this movie. I personally could watch Donald O'Connor sing 'Make 'Em Laugh' over and over and over and over.
11
Memphis Belle 1990,  PG-13)
Memphis Belle
I love this film and I cry when I see it - a lot! Love the cast, especially Matthew Modine (very underrated actor). This film makes me laugh, jump and cry (a lot).
12
Love & Sex 2000,  R)
Love & Sex
Generally overlooked rom-com with some very funny moments and some of the best lines ever delivered in the genre. Jon Favreau is gorgeous and cuddly as ever.
13
The Princess Bride 1987,  PG)
The Princess Bride
Second film I ever fell in love with! Also fell in love with Cary Elwes as Wesley (but that's another story). This movie is amazingly good.
14
The Commitments 1991,  R)
The Commitments
Oh my goodness - how great is this film? Possibly the best soundtrack ever and real funny, touching and dramatic moments. Love it!
15
Stand by Me 1986,  R)
Stand by Me
One of the best films EVER made - thank you Rob Reiner.
16
Pillow Talk 1959,  Unrated)
Pillow Talk
Doris Day and Rock Hudson (with the help of the great Tony Randall and director Michael Gordon) showing all modern day film-makers how to make a brilliant romantic comedy. Hilarious, great sets, great costumes and a gorgeous Rock Hudson to boot.
17
Stella Dallas 1937,  Unrated)
Stella Dallas
Barbara Stanwyck left every other queen of melodrama standing - and this movie proves it. She was born to play this role and outshines everyone else on-screen, managing to make the character of Stella both annoyingly manipulative and endearingly vulnerable at one and the same time. Absolutely amazing! I well-up each time I watch it.
18
Now, Voyager 1942,  Unrated)
Now, Voyager
I love the melodramas of the 30s, 40s and 50s - and this has got be one of the best examples of the genre. So well acted, with some classic lines and a great plot.
19
Imitation of Life 1958,  Unrated)
Imitation of Life
Watched this film again recently and it still gets to me! The storyline is ahead of its time and can be enjoyed on more than one level - as a staightforward weepie or a social commentary. Great performances - particularly from Juanita Moore. Douglas Sirk pulls off yet another film masterpiece.
20
Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) 2007,  PG-13)
Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly)
Wow - beautiful, uplifting, real and very, very moving. This movie is now the best I've seen so far in 2008 and has set the bar very high for the rest of the year. The direction, cinematography, music, script and performances are all excellent - almost perfect. It's hard to pick one performance from a brilliant ensemble cast, but Marie-Josee Croze is possibly slightly ahead of the rest with her portrayal of the optimistic and determined speech therapist.
21
Brief Encounter 1945,  Unrated)
Brief Encounter
Each time I see this movie I appreciate it more. Beautifully shot by David Lean, with story-telling techniques and camera tricks that were ahead of their time. Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard both act their hearts out-saying even more with eyes and body language than they do with their dialogue, so that you feel their despair. The narration from Johnson is so perfectly delivered and poetically beautiful that you can forgive her character for being a bit posh. The gorgeous music (Rachmaninov) is so perfectly matched to the mood of the movie throughout that it seems it was almost written for the film. The comic relief is also brilliantly done and still funny after all this time.

The Lives of Others 2006,  R)
The Lives of Others
The more I think about this movie, the more I love it. Beautiful, tragic and extremely moving - and made even more so because it is set during very recent history. 'The Lives of Others' is a film of many layers and complex characterisation - which means it would stand up to several viewings. Absolutely amazing movie.
