The Fisher King 1991, R)
My favourite movie of all time - no competition. If you know anything about the original mythology you'd know how amazingly clever this film is. It's many layers deal brilliantly with the dangers of pride and the healing that comes with forgiveness. Fantastic performances, beautifully shot - brilliant movie. |

Glory 1989, R)
If I could, I would give this movie a hundred stars. The acting is astounding, and the film tells the story without pulling any punches. The scene of the night before they go into the final battle and face certain death is probably my favourite scene ever - it's so moving. Love this film and everyone should see it. |

Empire Records 1995, PG-13)
In my mind, the only main contender to the throne for best teen movie ever - just pipped to the post by The Breakfast Club. Inspired stuff, brilliant lines and Anthony La Paglia - one of the best character actors around. What more do you want? Oh yeah - a kick-ass soundtrack. Check. Not too impressed with the Director's cut DVD version though. If you want to see this film I recommend the original cut. |

Stella Dallas 1937, Unrated)
Barbara Stanwyck left every other queen of melodrama standing - and this movie proves it. She was born to play this role and outshines everyone else on-screen, managing to make the character of Stella both annoyingly manipulative and endearingly vulnerable at one and the same time. Absolutely amazing! I well-up each time I watch it. |

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) 2007, PG-13)
Wow - beautiful, uplifting, real and very, very moving. This movie is now the best I've seen so far in 2008 and has set the bar very high for the rest of the year. The direction, cinematography, music, script and performances are all excellent - almost perfect. It's hard to pick one performance from a brilliant ensemble cast, but Marie-Josee Croze is possibly slightly ahead of the rest with her portrayal of the optimistic and determined speech therapist. |

Brief Encounter 1945, Unrated)
Each time I see this movie I appreciate it more. Beautifully shot by David Lean, with story-telling techniques and camera tricks that were ahead of their time. Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard both act their hearts out-saying even more with eyes and body language than they do with their dialogue, so that you feel their despair. The narration from Johnson is so perfectly delivered and poetically beautiful that you can forgive her character for being a bit posh. The gorgeous music (Rachmaninov) is so perfectly matched to the mood of the movie throughout that it seems it was almost written for the film. The comic relief is also brilliantly done and still funny after all this time. |

The Lives of Others 2006, R)
The more I think about this movie, the more I love it. Beautiful, tragic and extremely moving - and made even more so because it is set during very recent history. 'The Lives of Others' is a film of many layers and complex characterisation - which means it would stand up to several viewings. Absolutely amazing movie. |
