The Pianist 2002,  R)
The Pianist
It's dark, sad, funny (at times), amazing, astounding, horrific ... perfect.

I don't know where to start with this film. Everything about it is brilliant. The acting, the story, the sets, the direction, the cinematography, the emotion in the film. Everything is just as it such be!

I could go on forever ranting about the same thing over and over again. But I'm not going to.

This is my favourite film of all time. I don't care what anyone says, when he is conforted while wearing the German coat and asked why he is wearing it and he just replies in a croaky, hoarse whisper of a voice: "I'm cold." I cried. From pity, happiness, just a general overwhelming sense of emotion. Terrible things happen to Szpilman and that moment is the peak where he can stop and finally take in all the events that have happened to him.

I've lent this out a few times to friends, all who have loved it.

I prefer this to Schindler's List actually. That's how much I love it.

Should be seen by all!!!

Sin City 2005,  R)
Sin City
A fantastic film! The first Hollywood masterpiece of the 21st century. It's ultraviolent, funny and surreal!

It starts with the short story The Customer Is Always Right which throws the audience into the world of Sin City head first. The first line: "She shivers in the wind like the last leaf on a dying tree" paints a beautiful picture which the rest of the film builds on right until its last scene. Well ... the last scene properly brings the film to a close but isn't to good.

The first (full) story is The Hard Goodbye. Marv, a hardened (and crazy) criminal awakes after the night of life to find the girl he spent the night with dead. He has been set up and thats where the action kicks in. He goes on the run from the police hunting down the woman's killer. Marv perfectly describes the mood of the rest of the film: " It's going to be blood for blood and by the gallons. It's the old days. The bad days. The all-or-nothing days. They're back. There's no choices left and I'm ready for war."

Next comes The Big Fat Kill and then fianlly That Yellow Bastard.

The film goes from strength to strength, pulling no punches. The beautiful imagery and film noir storyline is fantastic.

A Clockwork Orange 1971,  R)
A Clockwork Orange
Incredible! The artistic cinematography, the fantastic (yet quirky) screenplay and not to mention the "ultraviolence". Starts as a kind of sadistic, satirical story of crime and violence (I love the scene when Alex and his drooges fight the rival gang. Brilliant!) and becomes a story of "goodness" and change, and that change isn't always for the better. The ending is fantastic, made me laugh.

Really must be seen to be believed! A cinematic masterpiece (the book's brilliant too). One of my favourite films.

Dog Day Afternoon 1975,  R)
Dog Day Afternoon
Pacino's best, he was great in Scarface, but in this? It's a crime he didn't get best actor for this!

Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) 2001,  R)
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
LOVE IT!!!

One of the best films I've seen in a long time!

It's charming, magical, hilarious, sweet ... I could go on and on and on.

If you ever watch a foreign film, make sure it's this one!!

Schindler's List 1993,  R)
Schindler's List
Beautifully shot. Incredibley long (though not quite Once Upon A Time In America) but thoroughly enjoyable. Speilberg has a real knack for war films! Speilberg's best? Probably.

The scene of the Nazis disposing of the Jews will stick with me for ever.
7
Dirty Harry 1971,  R)
Dirty Harry
Gruesome, controversial, one of the best films of the seventies and definetly my favourite Clint Eastwood film!
8
JFK 1992,  R)
JFK
One of the most enthralling films I have ever seen. From the start you are interested and your interest is kept until about 2 hours in when you yourself are getting sick of Garrison's ranting on JFK and for him to get a life, but not totally. After starting to get restless, the court scene starts and Stone reals you back in and catches you, right up to your utter disappointment at the ending. It's not a bad ending. Just not the one everyone wanted to see after 3 hours of evidence, anaylisis etc. But definetly one of the most important films I have ever seen! Should be seen by ALL!!

Yes, it is 198 mins. long (over three hours), but that is the fastest three-and-a-bit hours in my life! So enthralling! DO NOT be put off by it's length! WATCH IT NOW!!

Little Miss Sunshine 2006,  R)
Little Miss Sunshine
Fantastic!

Such a mixture of emotions. I have to be honest, when the boy is in the field, it doesn't half pull your heartstrings. It's full of sad moments, hilarious moments and moments inbetween. Definetly worth going to see! Great soundtrack (How It Ends - DeVotchKa) and fantastic cinematography, you can tell each shot is thought out carefully. Some of the landscapes even reminded me of Brokeback Mountain. Go see this now!

Collateral 2004,  R)
Collateral
I loved it. The scene where the coyotes cross the street is awesome. Loved every minute of it. I'm growing to like Mr. Mann very much.

War of the Worlds
Didn't go down to well with critics but this is an awesome film. Especially for a fan of the original. Some fantastic cinematography and an excellent script. This film is so underrated.
