Seven (Se7en)
Excellent thriller....creepy, clever, intelligent and engaging.
2
The Bride of Frankenstein 1935,  Unrated)
The Bride of Frankenstein
One of the few horror films that is considered a classic outside of its own genre. James Whale broke all the rules and pushed the envelope as far as was possible in 1935. Brilliant.

Casablanca 1942,  PG)
Casablanca
One of those rare films where everything just works.
4
21 Grams 2003,  R)
21 Grams
Clever and gut-wrenchingly emotional. Stays with you long after it's over.
5
Rob Roy 1995,  R)
Rob Roy
Overshadowed by the almost simultaneous release of "Braveheart", this true story of Scottish hero Robert MacGregor is actually superior to Mel Gibson's flawed epic.
6
Bram Stoker's Dracula 1992,  R)
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Follows the original book closer than most, but still takes dramatic liberties. I love how the TRUE story of Dracula is brought into the story. Very nicely done.
7
Carnival of Souls 1962,  R)
Carnival of Souls
Made in 1962 by a guy from Lawrence, KS, starring a bunch of people from Lawrence, KS, this cheaply made indie has become a classic, and was the inspiration for many films that followed.
8
The Day the Earth Stood Still 1951,  G)
The Day the Earth Stood Still
A man comes from the sky with a message to save humanity, but the very people he's trying to save kill him. He's raised from the dead, delivers his message and ascends into the sky. Sound familiar? A sci-fi Christ allegory.
9

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
Silly as hell, but funny...lots of laughs and one-liners.
10

Sad and depressing, but that's what it's supposed to be. Excellent performances all around.
13
Snatch 2001,  R)
Snatch
Packed with action and humor, a fast-paced flick about a bunch of inept criminals all out to snatch a huge diamond from each other. Brad Pitt steals the show with his performance as a fast-talking Irish gypsy.

A sad, but funny tale of a man revisiting his past. Great work by Bill Murray.
16
Saving Private Ryan 1998,  R)
Saving Private Ryan
A very realistic and heart-wrenching tale set in WW2. Tom Hanks should have won an Oscar for this performance.
17
Scent of a Woman 1992,  R)
Scent of a Woman
Al Pacino is brilliant. Without him, this film would have been a three-star effort, at best.
18

The Big Sleep
Bogart...Bacall...a good story..what else do you need?
19
The Aviator 2004,  PG-13)
The Aviator
The film that sold me on Dicaprio. Excellent portrayal of one of the most unique figures in American history.
20
A Bridge Too Far 1977,  R)
A Bridge Too Far
The cast alone tells you how brilliant this true story is: Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Robert Redford, Laurence Olivier, Gene Hackman, Ryan O'Neal, Elliot Gould, James Caan, Anthony Hopkins, Liv Ullman, etc....
21
The Departed 2006,  R)
The Departed
Awesome. Scorses's best work, and wonderful performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and, of course, Jack Nicholson.
22
Desperado 1995,  R)
Desperado
Low budget, but fantabulous action flick. Classier than other films of this ilk, with a healthy dose of humor.
23
Once Upon a Time in Mexico 2003,  R)
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Superior sequel to Desperado, Johnny Depp adds a whole new dimension of oddball to the action-packed, but thought-provoking series.
24
Citizen Kane 1941,  PG)
Citizen Kane
"The greatest movie of all time," it's often called. I don't know about that, but it *IS* a great one.
25
The Duellists 1977,  PG)
The Duellists
Beautifully filmed and well-acted, this historical drama was Ridley Scott's directorial debut.

Doctor Zhivago
The epic of all epics...big, sweeping story with many memorable scenes and solid performances.
27
Ed Wood 1994,  R)
Ed Wood
Amazingly true story of an inept doofus who managed to spend his life doing what he loved, and doing it badly. Martin Landau is brilliant as Bela Lugosi.
28
Planet Terror (Grindhouse Presents: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror) 2007,  R)
Planet Terror (Grindhouse Presents: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror)
Imagine every horror movie cliche ever used and have them all crammed into one film. Great fun!!!
29
Dancer in the Dark 2000,  R)
Dancer in the Dark
No matter how many times I see it, Bjork has me crying like a baby by the time it's over.
30
The Crying Game 1992,  R)
The Crying Game
Things are never quite what they seem in this trans-genre masterpiece.
31
Lost In Translation 2003,  R)

Two people who feel misunderastood by those who should be closest to them meet and find that they understand each other perfectly. Friendship needs no translation.
32
A Love Song for Bobby Long 2004,  R)
A Love Song for Bobby Long
Great performances by Scarlett Johansson and John Travolta, and the REAL city of New Orleans as a backdrop make this one of the best films you've never heard of. See it.
33
Mulholland Drive 2001,  R)
Mulholland Drive
Normally a film that takes multiple viewings to figure out is frustrating. This one, however, BEGS you to watch it again and you WANT to. Mesmerizing and thought-provoking.
34
My Cousin Vinny 1992,  R)
My Cousin Vinny
Never loses its "funny" after multiple views. Marisa Tomei is brilliant in this one.

The perfect mystery/intrigue/detective thriller. A classic.
36
Fargo 1996,  R)
Fargo
Great black comedy/thriller with wonderful performances from Frances McDormand, William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi.

"OK, so we got a trooper pulls someone over, we got a shooting, these folks drive by, there's a high-speed pursuit, ends here and then this execution-type deal. "
37
Dogma 1999,  R)
Dogma
A condemnation of organized religion that is both hilarious and intelligent. Contrary to criticisms that it is anti-God, this film is, as I said, anti-organized religion...there is a difference, and if you can't tell the difference this movie is probaby way over your head.
38
Ginger Snaps 2000,  R)
Ginger Snaps
One of my favorite horror films. Scary, but with some brilliant black humor and teen coming-of-age angst. A unique delight.
