Der Baader Meinhof Komplex (The Baader Meinhof Complex) 2008, R)
I believe there's so much things to say about this subject but it isn't necessary to cram them all in one movie. Therefore there were a couple of scenes that weren't just going nowhere. However... it was fascinating. Absolutely kept me gripped the whole time, great acting and minimalistic cinematography (kind of like those old German crime tv series). |

The Company of Wolves 1984, R)
At first I was constantly cracking up but towards the end it actually improved. Lots of symbolism and pretty scenes. Though I would say that Carter's The Bloody Chamber is maybe more fruitful to read than watching this. Despite the charming wolf. And folks: if you see a naked man prowling in the woods, run for your life! xD |

Dog Day Afternoon 1975, R)
Pacino basically leads the whole show and the look on his face during the ending scene just shows exactly why he's amazing. The movie is based on a true story but it's a little misleading because the events didn't occur exactly the way they are described and whereas you begin to feel sorry for "Sonny" the real John seemed a really demanding, difficult and unpleasant personality. |

Hair 1979, PG)
[edit: I'm adding this to my favourites. I simply can't get it out of my head. Juicy Drew Sarich clips now, please ;) ] Some really memorable songs and great plot included with excellent cast. I recommend watching the French document "Hair, let the sun shine in". It really helps you understand the circumstances where this musical was born and the effects. Really moving. |

Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway 2008, Unrated)
Well, I'll never be able to see this on Broadway so this is a good consolation. Of course you can never mix a movie and a live performance successively but this comes close enough. Didn't like Justin Johnston but it was still amazing to see this shot at such a close range, the dvd will definitely start to ware out from excessive watching. |

The Seventh Seal (Det Sjunde inseglet) 1957, Unrated)
Amazing camera work. The ending where some of the characters face their destiny is crushing, but somehow right at the end it turns a little lighter. That is the key here. There's fear of death of which all try to cope in their own way, but at the same time strawberries and milk along with warm sun and singing birds make fears, doubts and sorrow thin and meaningless. Let's not forget the humour, too. The scene where Death is sawing a tree under one of the characters is hilarious. There's just bubbly laughter and a comforting blue sky always present in the background, despite some intense scenes of cynicism and despair. |

La Vie en Rose (La Mome) 2007, PG-13)
I confess not being familiar with Piaf as a person (though I do like some of her songs) but this made me want to learn more. The way the movie was shot was wonderful because it showed only certain moments of her life but not necessarily the best known. One cleverly shot moment in particular moved me into tears but I don't want to give any spoilers. |
