Chasing Amy
A young man pursues a lesbian. Their joining conflicts his relationship with his best friend.

I like Kevin Smith movies, even the bad ones, because he examines simple life in a complex way. He takes every day situations and analyzes and discusses what's happening. Not like straight dudes convert lipstick lesbians on a daily basis, but the events surrounding are quite normal.

I guess superficially its a chick flick, love story. But the conversations are interesting on a deeper level (and sometimes funny as shit). Like when Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs discussed tipping waitresses, Alyssa and Holden orally unpack and analyze relationship dynamics.

The scene where Holden professes his love to Alyssa is one of my all time favorite scenes of any movie evar. Its romantic and crushing and dramatic, complete with rain and thunder.

I know this movie like the back of my hand up until the, maybe last third of the movie. I have to stop watching when it gets too emotional and tragic. I just sympathize with the characters too much. I've watching this movies a million times. But hardly to completion.

Kevin Smith was dating Joey Lauren Adams when he wrote this. I really like Adams and Jason Lee. And why does everyone hate Ben Affleck so much?

Léon (The Professional)
Mathilda's family is killed by crooked DEA agents in a bad drug deal and seeks refuge with a hit man who reluctantly teaches her his trade.

This is Natalie Portman's best role (that I've seen) to date. I don't think she's a terrible actress or anything. I just think this movie is that good. Luc Besson is just that good. Jean Reno, Natalie Portman, and Gary Oldmaan are all just that good.

This is unconfirmed, but I read some where (prolly Wikipedia) that at the time of casting, Natalie Portman was outside of the age bracket for the role, but Besson and casting were so impressed with her interview that they cast her.

The American version (The Professional) omits several scenes that illuminate the love between Leon and Mathilda. I prefer the full director's cut, but the truncated version is still enjoyable and I'd rate it the same.

Its an action movie, but to me, ultimately its a love story. In the end, I always reluctantly well up.

The Fifth Element
Lilu is mankind's last hope for survival. Dallas must help her defeat intergalactic forces of evil.

Luc Besson kind of dumbs it down, but its all gravy. This is one of my favorite flicks. Its really one of those turn-your-brain-off-and-watch kinds of movies.

The visuals are all kinds of interesting: vibrant colors, cool CGI and makeup. There are gratuitous body shots of Jovovich and cheesy action and fight scenes reminiscent of the over-the-top nature of kung fu movies.

I love the star-studded cast and the fact that they were all willing participants in such a bizarre (and in Chris Tucker's case, potentially humiliating) flick. Tricky has a small role as Zorg's right hand man.

Besson's vision of the distant future of man (he thinks McDonald's will be around forever).

Gary Oldman plays one of the main antagonists and is less intimidating than say, the dirty DEA agent from Luc Besson's The Professional, Oldman's most villainous role I've seen him in.

There are so many golden little popculture tidbits in this movie.

Luc Besson continues to please and surprise me. He's capable of such a polarized variety of genres of movies.
