One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Nicholson is dynamite. Just an incredibly affecting story.

The Remains of the Day 1993,  PG)
The Remains of the Day
I'm not a period drama sort of guy. However, in this film's case I'll make an exception. I tried to read the book a few years ago, but I was a child and preferred such literary wonders such as Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole books! Shocking.

In short, this is one of the most wonderfully acted and beautifully directed films I have ever seen. If anyone can show me two more understated and perfect performances than those of Hopkins and Thompson I'd like to see them. Peter Vaughn and James Fox also sparkle, while for me, it was sad to see Christopher Reeve appear in a role that came seldom to him as he was superb in the small role of Lewis. Hugh Grant also does well in a role right before he hit superstardom with Four Weddings & a Funeral.

The Remains of the Day might not to be to everyone's liking at first. I had heard about how incredible the book was and have always been interested in seeing this and vaguely knew what it was about. However, I'm sure if you come into this film with an open mind and truly dedicate yourself to this masterpiece, you'll be rewarded in more ways than you can imagine.

Perfect.

The Hustler
Just fell in love with this film after 10 minutes. Funny, dark and gritty. Newman's greatest role as Fast Eddie Felson.
5
Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
I don't know anyone who doesn't like this. The best film of my generation.
6
The Godfather 1972,  R)
The Godfather
No words can describe the perfection of The Godfather. It just is.
7
Trainspotting 1996,  R)
Trainspotting
Hard-hitting, yet hilarious. Ewan McGregor's finest hour and in Begbie, one of cinema's most dislikeable villains.
8
Pulp Fiction 1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
How can I not have this in my Top Ten?? Everything about this film is unique from the way it's told, to the dialogue. Has a knack of making you care (or just realise how bloody cool they are) about even the most peripheral characters. 1994 was a great year for movies.
9
The Usual Suspects 1995,  R)
The Usual Suspects
Best twist EVER.
10
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004,  R)

American Beauty
Parodied endlessly, but no-one can doubt the greatness of this.

Jerry Maguire 1996,  R)
Jerry Maguire
It's very rare for me to sit my backside down and be able to find the strength within myself to sit through a rom-com. However, Jerry Mcguire is different. It was one of the only rom-coms I was attracted to myself and not just one of those you go along with just to pull some bird (Monster-in-Law etc. etc.), but then it so much more than that. Again, I don't do plot summaries, because I'm lazy and you get them by clicking on the film thumbnail. I just like to say how films made me feel. I realised that I hadn't done a little review for one of my favourite films, so in short, here it is. It's messy as per. So what? Get over it Robert Ebert.

Jerry Mcguire, in my opinion, offers the viewer everything. It's entertaining, the characters make you care for them (yes, that even includes Tom Cruise) and the story is well-rounded. It very much feels like a Cameron Crowe movie, much like Singles or Almost Famous, but this offers more than those. I just feel very emotionally attached to this film every time I watch it, mainly due to the characters and the journey they take through the film. It was Crowe's first and, maybe Vaniila Sky aside, only perfect movie. Cruise shows why he was one of the biggest movie stars of all-time before he went all wacko (cheers Scientology!), Cuba Gooding Jr. gives a superb performance. Anyone who says that he just plays a typical OTT black man must not watch Monday Night Football or read the papers about the characters of the NFL - they are OTT! Zelleweger is good in her breakthrough role. I liked her a lot. Special kudos to Jay Mohr as Bob Sugar. He will make you want to punch him in the face, which is exactly the reaction that he's supposed to bring out in you.

All in all, a great film and one of my favourites. It surprised me. Give it a chance to surprise you too. "SHOW ME THE MONEY"!

L.A. Confidential 1997,  R)
L.A. Confidential
Another brilliant story told against a stylish 1950s backdrop. Although the big names shine, this film is owned by then newcomers Crowe and Pearce.

Meet Joe Black 1998,  PG-13)
Meet Joe Black
The film that has brought out the most emotion in me.

Dead Man's Shoes 2004,  Unrated)
Dead Man's Shoes
Why, why, why isn't this seen as one of the greatest British films ever made?? Everything about this film is glorious. British indie movie-making at it's absolute finest. Why Paddy Considine has not been made a star yet is an absolute disgrace to everyone involved in the film industry. Funny, brutal, terrifying and heartbreaking. Easily British cinema's finest work since the great Trainspotting in my opinion. Powerful.
17
The Sting 1973,  PG)
The Sting
Saying this is just a good old double-cross movie would be underselling this film to the point where I'd want to punch you in the face (it'd be a girly punch, but it'd still hurt). In Newman and Redford, you have the one most charismatic duos in the history of film to light up this fantastic feel-good film. Definitely one of the best ever. Ya falla?

The Matrix 1999,  R)
The Matrix
Simply revolutionary. One of the coolest movies ever made. One of the most original and best sci-fi movies ever.

Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Biting satire on the idiocy of governments during the prospect of an accidental nuclear war. Funny, but also terrifying in its message. Peter Sellars provides three masterful performances, while George C. Scott's turn as General Turgidson is one of my favourite comedic performances.

Sexy Beast 2001,  R)

GoodFellas 1990,  R)

Full Metal Jacket
Worth a place in the Top 20 for the first hour alone. Emery's performance should have won him an Oscar.

Eastern Promises 2007,  R)
Eastern Promises
Well, well, well...at last I have watched it...AWESOME! Yet another winner from the Cronenberg/Mortensen partnership. I was a huge fan of a History Of Violence and this was just as good. I've seen a lot of people's reviews commenting on how slow the film is. I just cannot agree. There is not a single piece of dialogue wasted by any character and every scene has something connected to the story, a character or is just simply meaningful. Others have complained about the ending. People who watch films such as this really have to stop watching Hollywood drivel, where everything is in black and white and has a story with a beginning, a middle and an end. Cronenberg set's out to show, much like in A History Of Violence, that the character's lives in the film go on, just like in reality and while I won't ruin the ending, it leaves the main character with much to contemplate. Like his decision, the end is not just cut and dry. Every actor's performance is strong, but this is helped by how well written the characters are. However, Mortensen, Mueller-Stahl and Cassel are exceptional, whilst Watts gives another brilliantly understated performance. Immaculate film-making and highly recommended.
37
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
King of the smart blockbusters. Plus, Batman has always been one of my favourite characters in any form. On repeated viewing you can see past the hype and pick up on a number of flaws and issues, but it's still a great film.
38
Sideways 2004,  R)
Sideways
One of the best films of the noughties in my opinion. Amazing acting and the characters just reel you into their world leaving you wanting more. How Paul Giamatti wasn't even given an Academy nomination reeks of Hollywood rancid shitpots. For a film about wine, I was so surprised by it - it's not the first plot that catches your eye. It's a film I have watched over and over again and am always, always entertained by it.

Some of the best dialogue ever captured on film:

Withnail: [having just drunk a bottle of lighter fluid] Got any more?
Marwood: No. I have nothing.
Withnail: Liar. What's in your toolbox.
Marwood: Nothing.
Withnail: Liar. You've got antifreeze.
Marwood: You bloody fool. You should never mix your drinks.

Just genius. Amazing acting from both leads, but especially Richard E. Grant.
