the course of study at film schools
everywhere !! A supernatural thriller !!
2
The Miracle Worker 1962,  Unrated)
The Miracle Worker
Among the most triumphant films ever produced. Top
shelf in every category. Acting, writing, directing,
score, cinematography. If ever a film deserved to
be re-released on a "no holds barred-all the bells
and whistles DVD", this is it. The current DVD offers
only mono sound and a non-anamorphic 1:66:1
presentation. A remaster in 5.1 surround and
proper anamorphic display would be nice. Also
a featurette or two, behind the scenes, a Helen
Keller documentary, screen tests etc. etc. There
are certainly no shortage of stories to accompany
this superb film achievement. Just thoughts?
A Criterion or Anchor Bay release seems like a
great idea to me?

The Meerkats
Among the more interesting and entertaining wildlife documentaries

the various species of life in the Kalahari Desert. Nicely narrated by
Paul Newman. Recommended.

Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White have presented us a superb 98 minute "love letter" to the electric guitar !! My highest recommendation !!

(500) Days of Summer 2009,  PG-13)
(500) Days of Summer
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are in top form again. Two
bright young talents. It dawned on me at the film`s conclusion that the film was totally free of "the f bomb" ? Not that I mind "modern English" in film....quite the contrary. But it was actually a little refreshing to hear a script and not be f- bombarded? Please don`t get me wrong. The "f-bomb" and it`s variances are very effective nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Anyway, excellent film. Not fluffy. Smart funny and touching. Recommended !!

Lying 2006,  Unrated)
Lying
IMDb voters give this a mere 5.8 out of 10? C`mon ?? This fine indie flick was hypnotic from start to finish. Nothing major unfolds. No heavy plot.
Interesting in a subtle way and fine low-key performances from a dream
cast of excellent young actresses. 90 minutes very well spent.

The Blind Side 2009,  PG-13)
The Blind Side
QUALITY !!! Excellent performances and story. What I really liked was how the family acted as a team. None of the usual "spouse finds a crusade
and other spouse`s tits get in a knot" followed by fighting and estrangement. Not here...and it was REFRESHING !!! SIMPLY SUPERB !!
267
Real Time 2008,  R)
Real Time
Jay Baruchel is among the most talented young actors of today. A natural, and very funny. Randy Quaid is like fine wine. A consummate professional.
Together here in "Real Time", their chemistry is firing on all cylinders. Here
is a film that will fly underneath the mainstream radar and it`s a little gem.
A mere 78 minutes is all it takes. Dialogue driven with a shoe-string budget and filmed entirely in Hamilton, Ontario. Highly recommended !!

The Sticky Fingers of Time 1997,  Unrated)
The Sticky Fingers of Time
Fascinating !! A real film noir feel. Like a 50s pulp novel come to life. Call it a mysterious sci-fi with zero special effects...how refreshing !! Captivating
script. A wonderful low budget independent film. Caught me off guard !!
269
The Lovely Bones 2009,  PG-13)

Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage

Dazed and Confused 1993,  R)
Dazed and Confused
Genius !! An instant favorite. I think a combination of the DVD cover art and the title had led me to believe that this film was just another ridiculous
teen comedy? Like a 90`s version of the asinine "Superbad"? Or perhaps all these years I had thought it to be a lame attempt to rehash the magic of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"? WRONG on both counts !! "Dazed and Confused" is in a class all it`s own. Took me long enough to find this out. I don`t know if I even laughed more than twice tonight during my first view?
Or if I laughed at all? To me it seemed like a really good drama full of interesting characters, some of whom I could recognize and/or identify with. Likeable characters, beautiful automobiles {classics from the 50s & 60s still cruised the boulevards in 1976} and an awesome soundtrack. Very highly recommended !!

The White Ribbon (Das weisse Band) 2009,  R)
The White Ribbon (Das weisse Band)
German with English subtitles. Directed by Michael Haneke {Cache, Funny Games}. Dialogue driven with effective narrative. I`m not even going to attempt to analyze this intoxicating masterpiece? I just enjoyed it...a lot !!
Beautiful black and white cinematography. A sinister and mysterious air throughout and some superb acting. Some might consider it "snail`s pace"? I love a good slow brew and this film provided just that. Very highly recommended.

Visited this flick tonight for the first time in many years. Always thought William H. Macy was superb here as he "borrows" many of the mannerisms
of his supreme character, Jerry Lundegaard from "Fargo". Expressions, patterns of speech etc. Different character for sure though. Great supporting cast and a nod to Donald Sutherland who plays a mean prick so very well here. Darkly amusing and thoughtful. Recommended.

Pine Trees. Water. Huge rocks and steep cliffs. And Molly Parker. How can one go wrong? Beautiful Canadian scenery becomes a character unto itself. My first re-watch tonight was better than my first. NICE !!!

Let the Right One In
Five stars +++++. A truly exceptional Swedish offering, destined to be a classic !! Magnificent in every regard !! There is an English and French dub but please go with the original Swedish 5.1 audio and subtitles. Sound is superb. I went to bed thinking about the ending and woke up thinking about the ending. I will NOT go near the North American remake which is to the best of my knowledge already in the works? This film ROCKS !!

Suck 2009,  R)
Suck
AWESOME !! I only purchased the DVD because Alex Lifeson of Rush had a bit part according to the credits on the case. I was totally impressed. A rock and roll vampire tale? This one fires on many cylinders with humor packing the best punch. Insanely witty script and some sweet stop-motion effects, so refreshing in an age of computer generated images. {of which there is some} The original music is great. The gore is tasteful, and again laced with humor. A good time. Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Moby, even a cameo by Carole Pope of Rough Trade. As for Alex Lifeson...he is downright hilarious in his own kind of way. Laugh out loud funny !!

The Year My Voice Broke
Now this is a wonderful film. So fine. I`m in a state of awe as a matter of fact. I love the simplicity, everyday events in lives that are far from extraordinary. "The Year My Voice Broke" had me feeling that I was not merely watching a movie, but I was walking along with the characters.....I`m a bit speechless actually? See it people !! Wonderfully crafted, exquisitely acted, and beautiful landscapes. Highly recommended for all ages. Among the greatest "coming of age" films you`ll see !!

One need not be interested in the monarchy and it`s history to be pulled into this finely crafted and superbly acted film. And who knows? It may have even tweaked a bit of interest in this viewer? A good film.
