Children of Men 2006,  R)
Children of Men
Amazing technical achievement with some of the most engrossing action sequences and staged one takes I've ever seen. On top of that, the film's harsh distopian tone is bleak without being inhumane and preachy. One of the greatest movies I've ever seen!
2
2001: A Space Odyssey 1968,  G)

Putney Swope 1969,  R)
Putney Swope
Revolutionary. This movie has some of the best dialogue of it's era and is one the most over-the top satire's on advertising I've seen. Some of the best 85 minutes of my life until this point.

Zerkalo (The Mirror) 1974,  Unrated)
Zerkalo (The Mirror)
Beautiful Tarkovsky was a master of mood and cinematography. This is a very personal film that reacts to his childhood and to I think his trials as a filmmaker.
5
La Haine (Hate) 1995,  R)
La Haine (Hate)
Great Film. Great dialogue and great cinematography. Kassovitz needs to get back to his roots.
6
My Life to Live (It's My Life) (Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux) 1962,  Unrated)
My Life to Live (It's My Life) (Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux)
Godard's Masterpiece! His existential influence really comes out in this film. One of the most creatively shot films ever made!
7
Fa Yeung Nin Wa (In the Mood for Love) 2000,  PG)
Fa Yeung Nin Wa (In the Mood for Love)
Brilliant! The most romantic film ever made! Wong Kar Wai is a genious and Christopher Doyle is a master cinematographer.
8
The Fountain 2006,  PG-13)
The Fountain
Got to see this at the Vancouver Film Festival. Amazingly spiritual story of life and love and death as enlightenment with Aronofsky's style as perfected as it has been with parelleling three relatable stories and periods (past, present, future) and tying them together with repetition in cutting and photography and great use of musical score as crescendo. Inspiring!
9
Stalker 1979,  Unrated)
Stalker
A great film of mood and enviornment testing patience of audience with some beautifully slow interactions with three varying characters. Tarkovsky's use of black and white to color film as a seperation of location from the real world of the characters to the "Zone" in which they strive for is a brilliant idea. This is one of the best post apocalyptic films ever made.

Unbreakable
Well rounded one of the best movies ever made. Story is great, the craft is perfect and the acting is subtle and underappreciated. Shyamalan's Masterpiece that he will never top.

Mysterious Skin 2004,  NC-17)
Mysterious Skin
Amazing. Best Araki film I've seen. It's got the offbeat humor of Nowhere but is balanced with some incredible emotional moments. A great pyscological study without being overly analytical. WATCH IT! Soundtrack is awesome as well.

A Scanner Darkly 2006,  R)
A Scanner Darkly
This is one Dick book I hadn't read, but the truest to his work ever produced in sense of mood, politics and dialogue. Linklater stays true to PKD in a respectul way, not just utilizing one of his stories to make a hollywood crapfest, but diving into the sublteys and social undertones of his stories. Beautiful film.

Days of Being Wild (A Fei zheng chuan) 1990,  Unrated)
Days of Being Wild (A Fei zheng chuan)
Brilliant photography! One of the most sensuous films I've seen. Has a way of using shallow depth of field within small spaces and great blocking to create a real third person feel. It's almost as if the camera is a piece of clothing on the character's bodies, going soft, moist, close and intimate. Reminds me of the blocking of Fassbinder and the intimacy of Godard or Cassavetes.
