E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
An film that appeals to the innocent child inside. Spielberg draws our eyes to the classically crafted visuals and superb, though sparse effects. The success lies, however, in drawing our hearts to the sadness of a single parent family. The ensemble cast convey the triumphs, tragedies and gentle humour of every day life so well that you could delete the little brown fella and still love this film.

Mean Streets 1973,  R)
Mean Streets
A film so daring and honest in its depiction of youthful indecision and frustration that it has never been surpassed. It all started here for Scorsese: from the fantastic soundtrack and vigerous pace to the mature melding of themes of religion, family, violence and passion. A truely magnificent film.

Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) 2001,  R)
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
My first and favourite Jeunet film. A film for the romantic, optomistic and imaginitive. While she at times has to compete with the vibrant and lush visuals Tautou glows and gives a great performance.

Raging Bull 1980,  R)
Raging Bull
A stunning character study. The black and white style focuses attention on the superb performances and Scorsese's mix of verité and new wave shots gives a small story cinematic weight.
