The Barbarian Invasions (Les Invasions barbares)
This explores generational change and the struggle of a young man to understand his father who is in his last days. I wish I could get my Dad to watch sub-titled films. This film describes some things perfectly which I can't put into words.

Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
Packs an intellectual punch as well as being an exciting 'whodunnit'. Politics and philosophy presented with an aggressive style. Plenty of action and good looking actors for those who prefer not to have to think too much in the theatre.
5
Blade Runner 1982,  R)
Blade Runner
If I was ever told I could only wathch one movie ever again, this would be it. It's also interesting to watch the original cinema release (rather than the director's cut) just to see how stupid the studios think the audiences are. Harrison Ford's voice over (which is removed in the newer version) is true to the film noire style of the film, but it spells out what's happenning in the movie as if the audience had the comprehension of a seven year old.
