Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back 1980,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
The greatest science fiction film ever and one of the few sequels to be better than the original. Out of the original Star Wars trilogy, this is by far the darkest chapter and really adds to the story that was established in the film that came before it.

With more action, drama, better special effects and yet another impressive score from John Williams, this dark story leaves the good guys appearing to be almost certainly doomed while still leaving a glimmer of hope that evil can be conquered once and for all...

Avatar 2009,  PG-13)
Avatar
This would be the best experience I've had in going to the cinema. James Cameron has defied the odds and created an immersive world with amazing spectacle which is part of what the visual medium of movies are all about. CG characters and 3D have been done before, but what is achieved in Avatar is a step above everything that has come before it.

While it is true that the story is certainly not the most original and there are many parallels to other films and lots of cliches or predictable moments, that does not in anyway mean it is a bad story. It is a very good story, that can feel fimilar to a wide range of people and still touch on the emotions and thoughts of the audience with it's messages of peace and acceptance. Far too many people forget that stories do not have to be totally new to be great, as long as they have elements that people can identify with, while being an outlet to escape the confines of reality, the storyteller has succeeded.

Despite being a long movie, there are very few points where the story or the action slows down enough to get boring and there is also plenty of details to explain the story to those who don't really want to rack their brains trying to figure out what is going on like in some epic films. The acting is great and fits the tone of the story well and each character has it's own place. I still marvel at the way each of the actors who play Na'vi characters can be recognized by their faces and expressions. A simple thing like a smile can breathe more life into a creature than people might realise.

The technology which was created to make this masterpeice have for the first time given us CG characters that actually resemble the actors who play them. 3D effects that don't feel like a gimmick but actually bring you closer to the action are a very welcome change to movie making which I must say has been far too long coming. An immersive cinematic experience like this has never been realised before and it is sure to be the benchmark by which future epic films are judged.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991,  R)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Arnold Schwarzenegger gives his best performance in his most famous role in probably the greatest action sci-fi film there is. James Cameron has done a brilliant job in blending a complex story with action to create a movie which will thrill and entertain.

Even though the CGIl effects in this look old by todays standards, they still hold up well and still work in the ways they were used without distracting from the action. The story does have it's occasional plot holes which come from flaws or inconsitencies with the first movie, but if you can overlook those, it allows for this movie to be one of the best sequels of all time...
5
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 2002,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Even though this film stands as the middle act of a 3 act story, it still manages to keep the flow that began in the first movie without leaving the audience with a feeling of misery and hopelessness. Like the first film, it again uses all of the tools available to Peter Jackson to create an excellent adventure story which continues into the final chapter making the trilogy seem like one massive movie...
6
The Fifth Element 1997,  PG-13)
The Fifth Element
A perfect blend of action and sci-fi which could be described as Die Hard in space. It's use of bright colours, excellent sound and great performances from the cast give this movie a unique atmosphere which is only enhanced by the great story which is both interesting and action packed. Luc Besson created an instant classic with this film which will always remain one of the greatest sci-fi epics of all time.
7
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith 2005,  PG-13)
8
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
While I thoroughly enjoyed Batman Begins, I had previously considered the original Tim Burton Batman film to be the best of the Batman movies, but now The Dark Knight clearly surpasses it in practically every way. I would even say that it is the best superhero/comic book movie ever too, which I use to think to be the original Superman.

I was originally skeptical about the way the Joker was going to be portrayed in this film. The trailers really only show the serious elements of Heath Ledger's amazing performance. But thankfully there is a funny (albeit psycho) side to the Joker's personality just as there ought to be. Any character who calls himself the Joker and wears make up like that should have some amount of humor, or it would not make sense.

Even though it is a 2 and a half hour movie, the action hardly lets up and in between all of the great stunts, fights and effects, there is some brilliant plot and character development through the use of well written dialog. It doesn't try too hard to cram too many characters and plot elements to the same story either, but has plenty to keep it interesting while maintaining the excellent level of develop. This is something which movies like Spider-man 3 certainly failed to do.

For anyone who is a fan of comic book heroes and Batman, you will no doubt love this film. For anyone else who isn't into them, then I can say that you would still enjoy it. I will say though that this is certainly not a kids movie as there are some scenes that are quite graphic and there is plenty of themes that require a level of maturity to grasp.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
This first chapter of the Peter Jackson masterpiece perfectly sets the scene to what lies ahead in Tolkien's tale of good versus evil set in the fantasy world of Middle-Earth. Made with a well balanced blend of special effect rich battles, drama and humour, it shines as one of the most well put together films of all time...
10
The Matrix 1999,  R)
11
Batman 1989,  PG-13)
Batman
Tim Burton's first Batman film was a brilliant one which certainly gave renewed hope to the comic book genre. Michael Keaton has done a surprisingly excellent job of portraying the character of Batman/Bruce Wayne after being known only for roles in comdey films. Jack Nicholson is and will always be known for playing the Joker with his insanity and that constant grin...
12
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi 1983,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
The final installment of the Star Wars saga is an entertaining blend of a good story, great action and special effects. Despite some of it's over the top ideas such as the cuddly Ewoks defeating an army of Imperial troops, this movie is a fitting end to the series with an appropriate happy feeling that good has finally triumphed over evil.
13
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 1989,  PG-13)
14
Superman 1978,  PG)
15
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope 1977,  PG)
16
Back to the Future 1985,  PG)
Back to the Future
One of the most entertaining films ever. This was a great mix of comedy, romance and science-fiction. The idea of being a kid and getting to see how your parents lived and first met really is interesting and is one of the things that makes this movie so special.
17
Gladiator 2000,  R)
18
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 1999,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
One of the most anticipated movie releases ever, turned out to be a dissappointment to fans who had imagined a different story than what this film told. Once people understood what George Lucas was trying to do with the Star Wars franchise, this film serves as an essential introduction to the tale of good against evil in a galaxy far, far away.
19
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) 1981,  PG)
20
Independence Day 1996,  PG-13)
21
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie 1990,  PG)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie
The Ninja Turtles movie brilliantly deomonstrates the drama of being a teenager and the relationships with parents while featuring some excellent action scenes and humour. Much more serious and mature than what many kids were used to, but it is an excellent adaptation of the comics and cartoon series which is a joy to watch...
22
The Matrix Reloaded 2003,  R)
23
The Princess Bride 1987,  PG)
24
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones 2002,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
Yet another great chapter of the Star Wars saga is told in this film. Even though it is probably the weakest of the series, it's story, action and special effects are still brilliant and help to fill in some of the important spaces in this epic sci-fi tale of good and evil. Hayden Christensen's protrayal of the confused and yet gifted youngster is quite well done
25
The Terminator 1984,  R)
The Terminator
An absolutely amazing low budget sci-fi thriller featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role he was born to play. While it wasn't as good as it's better known big budget sequel, it was still an excellent part of the series. This film is the reason why James Cameron was allowed to make other movies.
26
Transformers 2007,  PG-13)
Transformers
Being a child of the 80s and growing up with the original Transformers cartoon and toys, I was one of those fans who would be a bit wary of a live action film adaptation living upto my expectations. I am happy to say that I am more than impressed by this film and feel that it is the best movie of this season for big blockbusters so far. The effects were spot on, the action keeps you on the edge of the seat and Hugo Weaving as the voice of Megatron was surprisingly fitting.

It wasn't perfect though, as Michael Bay still doesn't seem capable of having shots last more than 2 seconds, and there could have been a lot more character development of the Transformers, especially the Decepticons. Many people seem to have issues with the plot regarding the All Spark, but to me it works better in a movie than the ongoing battle for Energon cubes did in the cartoon. I am also now glad that Bumble Bee was made into a Camaro, as it could have ended up very Herbie-like otherwise.

My only real gripe is the bright flames on Optimus Prime. They just make him look gay...
27
Willow 1988,  PG)
28
Stargate 1994,  PG-13)
29
Spider-Man 2002,  PG-13)
30
RoboCop 1987,  R)
RoboCop
Paul Verhoeven has made 3 amazing sci-fi action films with this being the best of the three. The intelligence of the story is in it's perfect blend of satire and action. Peter Weller is perfect as the resurrected police officer who becomes the future of law enforcement. The brutality of the violence such as Murphy's death scene might shock some people, but it is certainly worth a look to anyone wanting a dramatic action superhero film.
31
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 2006,  PG-13)
32
Back to the Future Part III 1990,  PG)
Back to the Future Part III
Almost as good as the original film, this one certainly shows off some brilliant ideas when it comes to the fiction of time travel and how people of today would handle living in the wild west. As usual, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd fill their roles perfectly and Robert Zemeckis shows us why he is such a talented director.
33
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 2003,  PG-13)
34
Hook 1991,  PG)
35
GoldenEye 1995,  PG-13)
GoldenEye
The best Pierce Brosnan 007 film, and one of the best films of the series. Excellent proof that it is possible to make a decent 007 movie without having to base it on an Ian Flemming novel. Great plot, good action and brilliant cast. Well worth the watch for any fan of James Bond.
36
True Lies 1994,  R)
37
Spider-Man 2 2004,  PG-13)
38
Back to the Future Part II 1989,  PG)
Back to the Future Part II
An excellent sequel to a classic film which actually succeeds to use the same story of it's predecessor in a new way. Still full of the same comedis style and flair of the original and only let down by the fact that it is a bit more difficult to get your head around everything. The future is awesome for this classic.
39
Broken Arrow 1996,  R)
40
Total Recall 1990,  R)
Total Recall
Director of RoboCop, Paul Verhoeven, and star of The Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, have joined forces to make yet another brilliant piece of sci-fi action to take you to another world full of blood and more twists and turns than a rollercoaster. The heroes and villians are all portrayed brilliantly in this futuristice world where Mars has become the crime capital of the Solar System...
41
Saving Private Ryan 1998,  R)
42
Aliens 1986,  R)
43
Hellboy 2004,  PG-13)
44
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 1984,  PG)
45
Serenity 2005,  PG-13)
Serenity
This film was certainly needed after Joss Whedon's excellent TV series Firefly was cancelled. All of the original cast manage to keep that atmosphere that was had onboard Serenity in the original show. It is only enhanced by a bigger budget to allow for some excellent special effects and action. If only there was more of the TV series or more movies to come...
46
Superman Returns 2006,  PG-13)
Superman Returns
If you can get past the huge similarities with the original movie and understand the intentions of the film to begin with, this turns out to be a great comic book movie that does the character of Superman justice while serving as an excellent homage to the late Christopher Reeve...
47
Starship Troopers 1997,  R)
Starship Troopers
Another brilliant sci-fi action movie from Paul Verhoeven which again manages to blend clever satire with gore and pop culture. Great action scenes, brilliant score and an all round good cast...

The Patriot 2000,  R)
49
UHF 1989,  PG-13)
