There are really so many levels to this that I am consistently shocked it doesn't get more attention. It shows the underbelly of the 50s in surprising symbolic ways: racism, censorship, sexuality, sexism. And then, there are great performances, too.
Faithful to the book while being its own marvelous thing. All this and HB Carter as Edwina CigaretteHands! Pity my fave line was cut from the movie, but you can't have everything...
Reynolds is bleeding in her shoes while she tries to keep up with the dancing -- but it never shows in one of the best movies about movies ever -- classic songs, classic numbers that have never been bested!
Dear dead Spuddy Gray makes absolute sense of the Vietnam and Cambodia wars without ever standing up. Successfully captures the thrill of seeing him perform!
The power of books, of letters, of human connection... and all so intimately and lovingly presented. Only a tad stage-bound, but so is the story overall.
Preminger wanted to take on both Washington and Hollywood -- the first for its politics and the latter for its outdated code. We are the winners with this dark and all too real film... and what a cast! Significant also for the 1st depiction of an unequivocally gay bar in a film (albeit an odd and sinister one)
Solidly funny, and charming, and wacky, and everything one wants in a screwball -- and the first really big screwball, when comedy was still highly respected.
Brilliant and true to the spirit of the novel... let alone that it shows a real love of cartoons and what they can be. Hoskins deserved every award for this.
As it goes on,this movie becomes more and more a Joe Orton story... appropriately! Tender and tragic, it is a tale well told... and Molina is fantastic!
Brilliantly dark look at Vietnam through the lens of WWI music hall. Dripping with restrained irony, this is all too often overlooked today. Due for a revival.
Okay, it's awful in many ways, but Sam Jones? Hubba, hubba! It's fun -- and the soundtrack by Queen! Ritz O'Brien, Max von Sydow!! Topol!!! I actually saw this in a cinema when it first came out and I still cannot get enough! NOT THE BORE WORMS!!!
Lots of fun and lots of stars (Treat Williams, F Murray Abraham, Rita Moreno, Kaye Ballard) in a farce of modest proportions... it could almost be Bette Midler's early career meets the Mob, but somewhere along the line, the director loses the thread. Thank goodness the actors never do.
