Sullivan's Travels
COMPLETELY brilliant... no opportunity is lost, no moment is wasted. The performances are fantastic, too.
2
Parting Glances 1986,  R)
Parting Glances
Poster doesn't do it justice... an intimate tale of love old and new with beautiful life lessons. And hilarious!
3
The Women 1939,  Unrated)
The Women
Dialogue so fast and lines so witty/bitchy it DEMANDS repeated viewings... I've seen in over 80 times for sure!
4
His Girl Friday 1940,  Unrated)
5
Fuck (F*ck) 2005,  Unrated)
Fuck (F*ck)
Everything about a word, from origins to its use in movies and political discourse. Fascinating, engaging, naughty, and hilarious.

Paragraph 175 2000,  Unrated)
Paragraph 175
An important and personal document with 8 of the 10 known survivors.
7
Billy Elliot 2001,  R)
Billy Elliot
Hit me on a very deep level, having been a kid in the Arts who wanted validation. A bright fable with fabulous music and choreography.
8
Election 1999,  R)
Election
Sharp and sparkling.
9
Eat the Rich 1987,  R)
Eat the Rich
Fantastic, dark satiric farce, filled with great lines and horrific yet comic moments.
10
Pleasantville 1998,  PG-13)
Pleasantville
There are really so many levels to this that I am consistently shocked it doesn't get more attention. It shows the underbelly of the 50s in surprising symbolic ways: racism, censorship, sexuality, sexism. And then, there are great performances, too.
11
Beauty and The Beast (La Belle et la bête) 1946,  Unrated)
Beauty and The Beast (La Belle et la bête)
Startling, aching beauty and incredible invention keep this a fairy tale on the edge.
12
Le Testament d'Orphée 1960,  Unrated)
Le Testament d'Orphée
No one before or since has made the magic and symbols Cocteau created in this film.
13
Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
Faithful to the book while being its own marvelous thing. All this and HB Carter as Edwina CigaretteHands! Pity my fave line was cut from the movie, but you can't have everything...
14
Repo Man 1984,  R)
Repo Man
Social commentary or wacky culture clash? Why ask why?
15
Pretty in Pink 1986,  PG-13)
Pretty in Pink
I was so Duckie when I first saw this... still am. Still love the overdressed kids, the delicious Annie Potts, and all the soundtrack of my youth.
16
A Night at the Opera 1935,  Unrated)
A Night at the Opera
So many great bits, perfectly executed! The Marxes are at their best when piercing social strata and this does it!
17
Duck Soup 1933,  Unrated)
Duck Soup
I love this movie... the Marx Brothers at their most surreal with inexplicable costume changes and all!
18
Funny Girl 1968,  G)
Funny Girl
A sparkling film debut filled with all the chutzpah of youth and all the certainty of experience.
19
Singin' in the Rain 1952,  G)
Singin' in the Rain
Reynolds is bleeding in her shoes while she tries to keep up with the dancing -- but it never shows in one of the best movies about movies ever -- classic songs, classic numbers that have never been bested!
20
Closet Land 1990,  R)
Closet Land
Mesmerizing, claustrophobic, and unique in the world of cinema -- who could want more?
21
Enchanted April 1992,  PG)
Enchanted April
Don't let the pace fool you -- there is ALWAYS something going on with the characters. Joan Plowright was robbed of the Oscar.
22
Hair 1979,  PG)
Hair
Terrific adaptation, fabulous choreography, eclectic cast, sexy music!
23
Millennium 1989,  PG-13)
Millennium
It's horrible! And twice as much because it all happens twice! Kitschy, though, and I love it!
24
Swimming To Cambodia 1987,  Unrated)
Swimming To Cambodia
Dear dead Spuddy Gray makes absolute sense of the Vietnam and Cambodia wars without ever standing up. Successfully captures the thrill of seeing him perform!
25
The Celluloid Closet 1995,  R)
The Celluloid Closet
One of the rare times when the film outdoes the book -- and a documentary at that! Well worth repeated viewings.
26
Like Water for Chocolate (Como Agua para Chocolate) 1993,  R)
Like Water for Chocolate (Como Agua para Chocolate)
Magic realism is such a natural for film and this walks that line between comedy and drama perfectly!
27
84 Charing Cross Road 1987,  PG)
84 Charing Cross Road
The power of books, of letters, of human connection... and all so intimately and lovingly presented. Only a tad stage-bound, but so is the story overall.
28
Advise and Consent 1962,  Unrated)
Advise and Consent
Preminger wanted to take on both Washington and Hollywood -- the first for its politics and the latter for its outdated code. We are the winners with this dark and all too real film... and what a cast! Significant also for the 1st depiction of an unequivocally gay bar in a film (albeit an odd and sinister one)
29
Bullets Over Broadway 1994,  R)
Bullets Over Broadway
Honestly funny and treats the audience with some intelligence. Delightful farce, gentle drama, and standout roles.
30
Bringing Up Baby 1938,  Unrated)
Bringing Up Baby
Quite possibly the best screwball comedy ever made.
31
The Philadelphia Story 1940,  Unrated)
32
It Happened One Night 1934,  Unrated)
It Happened One Night
Solidly funny, and charming, and wacky, and everything one wants in a screwball -- and the first really big screwball, when comedy was still highly respected.
33
Who Framed Roger Rabbit 1988,  PG)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Brilliant and true to the spirit of the novel... let alone that it shows a real love of cartoons and what they can be. Hoskins deserved every award for this.
34
Harold and Maude 1971,  PG)
Harold and Maude
Sure, it's slower than movies today, but it cares about telling its story. I love this movie!
35
Prick Up Your Ears 1987,  R)
Prick Up Your Ears
As it goes on,this movie becomes more and more a Joe Orton story... appropriately! Tender and tragic, it is a tale well told... and Molina is fantastic!
36
Oh! What a Lovely War 1969,  G)
Oh! What a Lovely War
Brilliantly dark look at Vietnam through the lens of WWI music hall. Dripping with restrained irony, this is all too often overlooked today. Due for a revival.
37
Flash Gordon 1980,  PG)
Flash Gordon
Okay, it's awful in many ways, but Sam Jones? Hubba, hubba! It's fun -- and the soundtrack by Queen! Ritz O'Brien, Max von Sydow!! Topol!!! I actually saw this in a cinema when it first came out and I still cannot get enough! NOT THE BORE WORMS!!!
38
Once 2007,  R)
Once
Re-invents the movie musical. If the performances were not so restrained, it could be a soap opera, but they are spot on! Winsome and delightful!
39
The Ritz 1976,  R)
The Ritz
Lots of fun and lots of stars (Treat Williams, F Murray Abraham, Rita Moreno, Kaye Ballard) in a farce of modest proportions... it could almost be Bette Midler's early career meets the Mob, but somewhere along the line, the director loses the thread. Thank goodness the actors never do.
