Juliane Moore steals the scene as an older version of Lindsay Lohan with a Mummy Dearest complex (being the daughter, not the mother), in a spellbinding, cynical story where the characters are forced to face their ghosts in ways that would leave Freud aroused.
A wonderful, refreshing and superbly edited dramatic comedy from the director of Once, who depicts once again a warm, platonic relationship born from the mutual love that two people share for music, and oh boy, aren't the songs in this film just so lovely and beautiful!
The original theatrical version is surely great, a beautiful homage to cinema, but check out the extended director's cut, a new and quite different experience that gives much more space to the love story, resulting in a much richer and complete narrative. This is certainly one of my favourite films of all time.
I really cannot understand how overlooked and underrated this film is. This is nothing less than an extraordinary masterpiece in its own ways; a fascinating and powerful epic about honor, loyalty, redemption and love, beautifully photographed, greatly acted and so wonderfully scripted.
