A patronizing drama that uses a manipulative narrative structure to conceal its disgusting, racist message that for a black young boy like Big Mike to succeed in life he should follow what he is told by his "white Republican saviors", for they always know best.
Compelling when it comes to the making of Mary Poppins but quite sappy in virtually all the rest, it is pathetic that, just like Walt Disney did distorting her story to fulfill his needs, the movie does the same with an annoying characterization of Mrs. Travers for its feel-good purposes.

The original theatrical version is surely great, a beautiful homage to cinema, but check out the extended director's cut, a new and quite different experience that gives much more space to the love story, resulting in a much richer and complete narrative. This is certainly one of my favourite films of all time.
I really cannot understand how overlooked and underrated this film is. This is nothing less than an extraordinary masterpiece in its own ways; a fascinating and powerful epic about honor, loyalty, redemption and love, beautifully photographed, greatly acted and so wonderfully scripted.
