If this is really Soderbergh's last film, at least he parts in a good note with this impressive movie that transits from one genre to another - switching protagonists and growing from an intimate drama about depression to a pharmaco-thriller with clever twists.
An efficient alternate story that ought to give major goosebumps in trekkies and aficionados out there for its many overwhelming and well-inspired references - which compensates for how formulaic and intensely action-oriented it aims to be above everything else.

The original theatrical version is surely great, a beautiful homage to cinema, but check out the extended director's cut, a new and quite different experience that gives much more space to the love story, resulting in a much richer and complete narrative. This is certainly one of my favourite films of all time.
I really cannot understand how overlooked and underrated this film is. The Last Samurai is nothing less than an extraordinary masterpiece in its own ways, a fascinating and powerful epic about honor, loyalty, redemption and love, marvellously photographed, greatly acted, with beautiful dialogues and impeccable in every other way possible.
