I won't go into detail about what I think of this film, other than I consider it to be one of the best films ever made. I find that I cannot fully explain how much I admire this film. Utterly, utterly, mind-blowingly amazing.
One of my favourite films EVER!!!! I cannot explain how great this is, I just love it to pieces! Fast cars, desert heat, buxom mean women, death by karate chopping, bitch fights, bitch slaps and the best dialogue ever in a film! This is Russ Meyer at his most fun and sinister at the same time. Thankyou RM and R.I.P!
One of the most amazing films ever made! Creepy, sexy, stylish and surreal this is a classic Lynch nightmare! I love everything about this film- 5 stars is an understatement!
Definitely one of my favourite films ever! A true classic! I have watched this film so much but have only seen the stage show twice. Rocky Horror was the film that really started my love of films, so it remains a very important film to me. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would.
Probably the most tragically beautiful film I have ever seen. I love everything about this film! I actually think that everything about this film is perfect. Every scene is amazing. I have no constructive criticism to say about this film, because I am just a FAN of it! I actually saw this before I watched the TV series, and it didn't ruin anything for me when watching the series, if anything it made the series more interesting! But I would probably advise anyone who hasn't seen the film to watch the series first, but I wouldn't say it's essential. But if you haven't seen this then you are missing out!
Another Lynch classic. This follows in a similar vein to 'Lost Highway' in the fact that the story is not easily explained and full of riddles. This film is beautiful, frightening, sexy and just utterly, utterly brilliant!
LONG LIVE TRASH CINEMA! This is John Waters at his best, if you love trash, bad acting and sick humour you will love this! This is a shiny jem in the jewellery box of trash films! Stars the brilliant Divine (RIP)
'Female Trouble' is up there on my all time greats list. I would describe it as 'a hilarious trash masterpiece'. 'Female Trouble' definitely goes hand in hand with Water's 'Pink Flamingos'. Part of the brilliance of this film is down to Water's trashy cast, mainly the late, great Divine (RIP). This will always remain a trash classic.
'Jubilee' is an excellent British film from the punk era. This is definitely a film for fans of obscure british cinema. Overall a wonderfully trashy, funny, bizarre film.
Fucking brilliant sci-fi trash! This is a super-duper film if you are a fan of obscure/trashy films! Features some amazing dialogue from the characters, colourful costumes and bizarre make-up and overall a slightly silly but inventive and funny storyline. 5 stars instantly!
'A good many dramatic situations begin with screaming!' Superbly trashy and camp, 'Barbarella' is extremely quotable and so so colourful it's hard not to love it! Great sets, costumes and dialogue add to the hyper OTT storyline perfectly. Overall I think 'Barbarella' is a feel-good LOL-fest. Classic stuff.
It's true, this film is hauntingly beautiful and surreal. I was kind of gobsmacked at the end simply by the whole dream-like quality and beautiful (sorry for lack of better word!) imagery that 'Valerie...' features. An odd, engaging and, i repeat, beautiful film that is also slightly disturbing...
A well deserved cult classic. '...Baby Jane' is at times genuinely frightening. Well shot and Bette Davis' performance is fucking A. Great, great film.
Definitely one of Meyer's best, and quite different from his other work. 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls' is fun fun fun and so melodramatic and camp. The songs are super, and the dialogue is so funny, I could quote this film to no end! Trashy-camp kitsch brilliance!!
I saw this for the first time recently, and afterwards all I had to say was "OMG. I love that film". Great characters, dialogue, mise en scene and cinematography is what I like most about Crash. Not a lot else matters. 'Sex and wrecks' was a quote on the back of the dvd case... that sums up the story, but there is so much more to Crash than that. So many wonders and pleasures await the viewer who is willing to look beyond the story!
Such a beautiful film, but one that might only appeal to people who can relate with May's story. This is sad, scary, sexy and funny and is pieced together so well. Oh yeh the soundtrack is also fucking ace! Stars the lovely Angela Bettis as May.
'Hedwig..' is so many things. Fun, touching, sad, funny, rocking, beautiful, sweet... really just an amazing film. I couldn't urge people to see it enough. A modern classic.
Very, very underrated in my opinion. If you look at 'Shock Treatment' as it's own film, and not as a sequel to 'Rocky Horror' you can see how amazing it really is. It's just a lot of fun, and I think it's good to see that Richard O'Brien could still produce some good material after Rocky.
I randomly came across Repo! when I was DVD browsing one day, just by looking at the cover I knew I had to see it. And when I did see it I was instantly hooked. The next day I showed it to a friend and she also loved it. I loved it even more the second time. We couldn't stop singing the songs, and another friend got interested. So I keep screening it to my friends and a strange Repo cult seems to be forming! I do think it's one of those 'love it or hate it' kind of films, I've read many mixed reviews, but this is one film that will undoubtedly become a major cult film in years to come. I would strongly reccomend this to anyone who likes horror and musicals and something a bit out of the ordinary. It views like a stage play crossed with a music video, the music is great, the characters endearing (most of them anyway!). Easily my favourite film of 2008.
'Desperate Living' has all the fun, filth and overt trashiness that Water's early films have become known and loved for. This is absolutely hilarious and very quotable - a trash classic.
Super stuff! What a great film! A classic that everyone should see! Deborah Harry may not be the best actress in the world but I love her in this! Excellent!!! LONG LIVE THE NEW FLESH!
This was made during Russ Meyer's 'gothic' period, during which he made 3 other films all in black and white: 'Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!', 'Lorna' and 'Mudhoney'. 'Motor Psycho' is like 'Faster Pussycat...' with three boys instead of three girls taking the lead. 'Faster Pussycat...' reigns supreme over this, but this is still an excellent Meyer work and well worth a watch for any Meyer fans. Also stars the lovely Haji from 'Faster Pussycat...'
This is where John Waters was just starting to sell out a bit, due to bigger budgets and more restriction on film content from his producers. But 'Cry Baby' is still a brilliant film, and there are still typical John Waters elements in there! The music is brilliant and the overall look of the film is good, but it was put down by a lot of hardcore fans because it showed Waters starting to use mainstream actors (most of his old usual cast had died by this point anyway) There isn't a problem with this really as all the actors in this do their job very well, it is just different to Waters earlier stuff.
I think 'Carrie' stands as one of the best classic horrors of the 70s. It really is deeply touching but also scary. I love Piper Laurie's performance in this as Carrie's mother - very frightening! And the image of Sissy Spacek as Carrie at the prom covered in blood as fire rages around her is unforgettable.
'Heathers' is one of the best black comedy's that there is. It is well on it's way to becoming a cult classic. This is due to many things that are good about the film, but I would have to say the costumes and dialogue play a big part in the appeal, and not forgetting the witty, clever storyline. Brilliant.
Like it's predecessor, 'Freeway', 'Confessions of a Trickbaby' is wonderfully trashy and has distictive 'fairytale' elements. (The story of 'Hansel and Gretel' is an obvious theme here.) So, so funny and superbly sick and disturbing, 'Confessions of a Trickbaby' is, overall, a highly enjoyable motion picture experience. Great performances from the lead actors (especially Gallo as 'Sister Gomez'!). Especially recommended to lovers of trash cinema.
I love this film, it is absolutely heartbreaking! I don't need to say how amazing Theron's performance is, as it goes without saying. 'Monster' is so well directed, and genuinely moving and sad. True, some of the storyline was glamourised for Hollywood purposes, but it all fits so well I don't think it could have been made any other way. See Nick Broomfield's docu-film 'Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer' for the real Aileen Wuornos' story.
Suspiria is definitely one of Dario's best films. It's certainly one of my favourite films! It just oozes style, with it's bold colours, OTT gore effects and that brilliant infamous Goblins soundtrack! It's a creepy, funny and surreal horror experience that is a must-see for any horror fan.
This truly is one of the best horror films ever made, and some parts do still contain shocks. So, so, so much better than the 2003 remake (as originals do tend to be better) - I don't think this film should really have been remade, because this is perfect and far more superior.
Rob Zombie wears his influences on his sleeve in this black comedy-horror. In 'House of 1000 Corpses', Rob Zombie pays homage to many famous horror films, which manages to make this a compelling, fun, sick and, at times, frightening film experience with noticeable B-movie elements. Followed by 'The Devil's Rejects', which is as equally a good film although it is missing Karen Black as Mother Firefly, which I think is one of the best parts about this film.
This is the film that really got me interested in Jennifer Tilly. It remains one of my old favourites. The film gets better after the introduction to the lesbian romance between Violet (Tilly) and Corky (Gershon). When Violet flirts with Corky it is tacky and cliched, but amusing at the same time! When the 'gangster' story is properly introduced, the film takes some clever twists and leaves the audience in genuine suspense. Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon both give good performances, and in the end the lesbian story fits really well with the rest of the film.
One of the best films I have seen in a long time! Truly amazing work! It actually succeeded in scaring me, and I don't get scared by horror films! People often slag this film off because of it's so called 'plot holes' but I didn't see any! Just make sure you have a very open mind when you see it, and read what you like into the story. That's what I did, and it all made sense. The gore is absolutely brilliant, very stylised and OTT. A very satisfying, creepy and astounding piece of work!
I would list this in the 'runners up' to the best horror films ever. It's like a little brother to some of the best horror's of the 70's, but with a more unbelieveable storyline! This is hilarious in places, has great music and Freddy is just such a cool character you can't help but love this film.
