Certainly tests the average proffer - "Wasn't as good as the first one." This was at least as good. One of My 45 Perfect Movies. Also loved the re-edit of I & II by Coppola as the Godfather Saga (with previously deleted scend that help tie everything together.
One of the best films from the past 20 years. Except for the unnecessary opening and ending with the old Vet - pretty damed perfect - I know, it was out of respect for that generation. The first 20 minutes has to be the best WWII battle sequences ever put on film.
One of the best crime dramas from any era. Remade several times in one form or another. Surprisingly, several of those films also hit the mark! But there's nothing to improve on the original. Fantastic dialogue. One of My 45 Perfect Movies.
One of My 45 Perfect Films. Wonderful performances in a special genre of young/old body changes. Hanks is his usual great self plus Frank Longia & Elizbeth Perkins are perfect in their supporting roles.
Bogey plays a great anti-hero, who becomes a hero. He was the mold for others to try to follow. And, damn! if Robinson doesn't play one of the meanest guys for any movie. Brutal. Great story, and wonderful set pieces. A fantastic cast in every part. Another of my 45 Perfect Movies.
Leone's first film, well the first that anyone noticed in the States. Of course, a BIG THANK YOU to Yojimbo! Practically speaking brought the western out of the dustbin of film history and made it great again. Ah, and the "man with no name" -- aren't we all glad he took the part?
A battlefield jaunt, complete with anachronistic characters and oddball humor and lots of action. A WWII fantasy heist movie! Perfect -- EXCEPT for the opening (& closing) theme music!!!! Please, please, don't let that turn you off before the movie really gets going! It was NEVER good music, even when the film was released. Someone just plain, screwed the pooch on that.
Classy, well acted, entertaining, some of the best sword fighting to be put on film. One of My Perfect Movies, along with the sequel (filmed at the same time).
Combine this with Lester's prequel and they would still be seamless. Of course they were filmed simultaneously. I cannot imagine any reaso for re-makes after these gems.
Being a jazz fanatic, a fan of gangster films and enamored with Diane Lane since Rumblefish, of course I'm going to love this movie. I know that I'm swimming up-stream against the critics (and many movie buffs) - but it?s a near-perfect film IMHO. The half-star off, is for length. Francis could have edited out at least 10 minutes.
Serio-comic scripting at its best. Fantastic performances and much like other films from this general period, even interium events have not caught oup to Paddy's vison! A masterpiece in every way.
MacBeth is one of the best entrees into Shakespeare, short of Romeo & Juliet, especially for boys (to men), but for the ladies ? there?s also one of the Bard?s greatest female characters. So, something for everyone ? well, it?s not a comedy, so that?s missing. Wonderful direction by Polanski to make it a "movie"; although he never bends the language so much as to dumb it down; and adding cinematic touches that are almost impossible on even the biggest stage set. Yes, Polanski took a few liberties but anyone who knows anything about Shakespeare knows that liberties are part of his cannon. I don?t think any of his plays were chiseled in marble.
I don't remember how successful this was when it was released, but among many movie lovers it was the funniest movie to come out in years! A turn on the mistaken identity plot. It's wonderful how everyone can keep a straight face among the supporting roles. Sutherland and Wilder are just...ridiculously funny. The 1/2 star off is for the VERY end. Not up to the quality of the rest of the picture.
I've seen this many times and despite lapses in timing and editing, still one of the best films of its generation. Forget that its not entirely "accurate" historically. In this time that's unimportant compared to the timelessness of the "Heart of Darkness" idea behind its main characters. It's a BIG movie, yet its main people are fleshed out beautifully. A bit too long for its own good, but rent the "second" director's cut anyway. The one with the extra, what? 15 minutes? Where they visit the French plantation. it doesn't make this gem that much longer.
