Donnie Darko 2001,  R)
Donnie Darko
This is one of my all time favorite movies. The story is deep, and often times can become a conversation piece. The acting is phenomenal, and the characters are deep.

If you haven't seen Donnie Darko yet, drop whatever you are doing, and watch it....NOW!

Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
Fight Club is a great tale of an insomniac who happens to run into a soap salesman. Together they create a chain of fight clubs that play by their own rules. But who is this Tyler Durden anyway? How well does Edward Norton know him?
3
Requiem for a Dream 2000,  R)
Requiem for a Dream
This movie is one hell of a ride. It can be disturbing, fun, or confusing, but most of all, it's touching.

The movie focuses on 4 people, 2 friends, a girlfriend and a mother, who all deal with addiction in their own way. It portrays the short high until the eventual low in such a great way that you can't help but fall in love with, and ultimately sorry for these characters.

Aranofsky does it again.
4
Hostel 2006,  R)
Hostel
Eli Roth's follow up to the fun Cabin Fever shows that he truly is a force to be reckoned with.

A bunch of guys go backpacking in Europe and are led to the town of Slovakia with the promise of beautiful women. Little do they know about the horrors they will find there, an art gallery where people can fulfill their sickest fantasies.

This is the #1 movie of 2006, if you even remotely like horror you have seen this already. If not...what are you waiting for?
5
Freddy Got Fingered 2001,  R)
Freddy Got Fingered
People need to lay off the hate on this movie. It's a hilarious tale of a guy who wants to be an animator. Sit back, relax, and don't take yourself so seriously because the next hour and a half will be the funnest, and sickest hour and a half of your life.
6
The Devil's Rejects 2005,  R)
The Devil's Rejects
The follow-up to the hit House of 1000 corpses, Rob Zombie this time around takes a more serious approach, a grittier feel, and the notion to bring us to feel compassion for those who we should despise.

Devil's Rejects features a great story, phenomenal acting, and some of the most disturbing imagery ever put to screen. Rob Zombie is proving that he is a film maker to look out for.
7
Koroshiya 1 (Ichi the Killer) 2001,  R)
Koroshiya 1 (Ichi the Killer)
The first Takashi Miike movie I ever saw, and quite possibly still my favorite, rivaling the likes of Audition, Dead or Alive, and The Great Yokai War.

Ichi the Killer is the tale not truly of Ichi, but of Kakihara (pictured), a masochist who was in love whi his boss for the pain he inflicted on him.

Kakihara is always in search of that ultimate high: death, which it seems only Ichi will be able to bring to him now that Boss Anjo is gone.

If you can't stand extreme amounts of gore and torture stay away, but if that is up your alley, Ichi the Killer will leave you breathless.
8
Oldboy 2004,  R)
Oldboy
Oldboy is a must see no matter who you are. That's all I will say because the story is so profound I don't even want to say a word about it.

Rent it, buy it, whatever just make sure this is the next movie you see, you'll be glad it was.
9
American Beauty 1999,  R)
American Beauty
American Beauty is an amazing tale about what beauty truly is and learning to let go. Kevin Spacey puts on a brilliant show playing a character who just decides to let it all go one day quitting his job, buying the things he always wanted, and just being who he has always wanted to be.

Prepare to be touched, I know I was.
10
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 2002,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Lord of the Rings is a modern piece of mythology. Tolkiens original work was a masterpiece and Peter Jackson's vision of it stands atop that same pedestal. Two Towers is the pinnacle of the trilogy featuring the intense battle at Helms Deep.

This movie is a hobbit lovers dream.
11
Audition (Ôdishon) 1999,  R)
Audition (Ôdishon)
Oh where to begin. Audition is a movie well known for being extremely graphic, yet completely confuses you as you begin to watch it. THe first half of the movie is a completely normal love story and for a while your wondering if you got the right movie. Of course you did though. The movie catches you completely off guard as creepy things start to pop up, kills that just make you cringe, and one of the cutest turned creepiest asian women of all time. Seriously, this woman gives me nightmares.

Stick in, stick in, stick in! * shudder*
12
Freddy vs. Jason 2003,  R)
13
Snakes on a Plane 2006,  R)
Snakes on a Plane
Snakes on a Plane!!!!

There really isn't much else that needs to be said about this movie but here we go:

Snakes on a Plane is about a guy who witnesses a murder and needs to testify in LA. Of course the one he saw doesn't want him getting there alive, so he unleashes snakes on a plane to take him and the whole plane down.

Snakes on a Plane is one of the most blatant B-Movies ever to hit the big screen, and that works to its advantage throughout the whole movie. It knows exactly what it is and what it should be and never takes itself TOO seriously.

Seriously though, this movie was THE feel good movie of this year. I walked out of the theatre invigorated and plastered with a huge grin.

Watch this movie, if not for the great concept, then for all the great snake kills they set-up.

SNAKES ON A MUTHA FUCKIN' PLANE BABY!
14
The X-Files - Fight the Future 1998,  PG-13)
The X-Files - Fight the Future
The X-Files movie is a brilliant piece of work that is oft undermined by those who have seen it. Most see the movie as an extended episode of the X-Files, but the production values of the X-Files were already so high, what else could it be?

The movie was bigger, dealt with a much larger and complex plot than ever before, and featured some of the biggest revelations in X-Files history. Tie in great performances by David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and Mitch Pileggi and you have an excellent movie on your hands.

If you haven't seen this movie yet, it's a great way to get into the series, and for fans of the series, the movie is that much more satisfying as you follow the characters you've grown to love take on their biggest endeavor yet.

Watch X-Files: Fight The Future, because if you don't, they win.
15
Serenity 2005,  PG-13)
Serenity
I couldn't think of a better way to send off Joss Whedon's lovechild.

The story Joss always wanted to do, before Buffy and Angel, was Firefly. FIreflys cult hit status would eventually lead to this gem of a movie.

Serenity takes you on board as Mal and crew as they "Aim to misbehave". Meanwhile, a bounty hunter is after them and will do anything it takes. And of course, who exactly are the Reavers?

The movie has a great sense of finality, yet leaves enough open if another movie is ever made (although judging from it's poor performance it ain't happening...too bad)
16
The Machinist 2003,  R)
The Machinist
This movie was amazingly well done. You have to give respect to Bale. He lost tons of weight for this role after building up for American Psycho and immediately needed to bulk up for Batman.

Anyways, the movie is a psychological thriller about Trevor Reznick who has insomnia. The movie begins to twist and turn as Trevor goes about his day to day life.

Watch for the skeleton dance. Cracks me up.
17
Dawn of the Dead 2004,  R)
18
American Psycho 2000,  R)
American Psycho
American Psycho tells the tale of Patrick Bateman, your typical every day business man. Patrick competes with coworkers to have the best business cards, keeps in peak physical condition with a rigorous exercise regimen, and oh yeah, hes a serial murder.

The tale of Patrick Bateman, the way in which he lures people in, and the relationships he keeps at work all come together to create one of the most compelling movies in recent times.

Watch it! (man I'm in love with Christian Bale.....in a totally non homo-erotic sort of way)
19
The Descent 2005,  R)
The Descent
What a GEM of a movie this is.

The Descent is about a group of girls who go cave exploring together to help a friend get over her dead family. What they don't know is what's waiting for them in this cave.

The best part of this movie (aside from the awesome gore and tense scenes) is just how well thought out the characters were. You could easily see these being real people. Even better, they were SMART about things, they didn't take the whole horror cliche of turning to complete idiots when the going got tough.

The directorial style could have used a bit of work during the action (filmmakers when will you learn that NOBODY likes quick cuts?) but overall a very strong film.

If you have any doubts about this movie, put them to rest because the Descent will rock your world.

Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters) 2003,  R)
Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters)
If you walk into this expecting the typical asian horror scare, prepare to be dazzled. The movie focuses on two sisters and their crazy step mom, and father who just doesn't seem to care anymore.

Wait for the movie to take you on twists and turns. The ending takes some thinking about but is a solid ending (regardless of what Vince says :P)

WATCH THIS MOVIE!
21
Road Trip 2000,  R)
Road Trip
One of my all time favorite comedies, Road Trip is about a guy who has been dating the same girl since he was a kid. When he one day cheats on her, not only does he tape it, but he accidentally sends her the tape! Hilarity ensues as a Road Trip is assembled to retrieve the package before his girlfriend can watch it. Toss in some Tom Green hijinks for good measure and you have a solid comedy that stands the test of time.
22
Shaun of the Dead 2004,  R)
Shaun of the Dead
1 Part Dawn of the Dead, 1 Part comedy and 12 parts fun, Shaun of the Dead is one hell of an adventure.

Taking the basic premise of a zombie outbreak and tacking on a hilarious cast of characters, and some great little foreshadowing chuckles, Shaun of the Dead is a must see zombie flick for everyone. It is a romantic comedy about zombies after all.
23
Aliens 1986,  R)
24
Suicide Club 2002,  R)
Suicide Club
This movie is one of the movies that made me the asian cinema nut that I am. What other movie opens with an entire platform of schoolgirls jumping in front of a train, causing blood to spray in every direction.

The movie goes on to feature many other interesting suicides, and also features a rich plot about finding your self worth.

Of course there's also Genesis...

Just watch this movie, it's got a bit of everything. It's gross, its shocking, its thought provoking, but most of all, its a hella good time.
25
A Nightmare on Elm Street 1984,  R)
A Nightmare on Elm Street
A Nightmare on Elm Street is probably my favorite entry in the Nightmare on Elm Street series.

Freddy Kruger is a child murderer who gets off in court on a technicality. When the town takes the law into their own hands, Freddy ends up coming back from the dead where parents can't protect their children...in their dreams.

The opening chapter in this series features inventive yet simple cinematography. Whether Freddy is showing you how long his arms can be, or you just can't run away because the stairs are turning into quick sand, the feeling of helplessness is everywhere.

Watch this movie, or Freddy will see you in your dreams.
