While it may not be the masterpiece in filmmaking that the Empire Strikes Back was, I prefer this film because of it's ending. Empire was really nothing more than an interlude in the sage, while Jedi remains the culmination of one of the greatest fantasy sagas of all time.
This highly underrated film from George Lucas mirrors Star Wars in so many ways it's hard to understand why it so underacheived. Ron Howard was at the top of his game when he directed this amazing film, and Val Kilmer's performance as the scoundrel Madmartigan outshines even Harrison Ford's Han Solo.
It would have been way too easy to do the same stuff over again, but The Matrix Reloaded boldly mixes things up and adds a lot more to the table. Unfortunately the deep philosophy introduced in this film was lost on many people and many found the film's lack of an ending distasteful. This film is every bit as good as the first.
While not Oscar material, Crimson Tide is still a rollicking thrill ride and an intense summer blockbuster. Popcorn flicks don't come much better than this.
Many may wonder why I gave this film such a high rating. The uncut version of this film is a masterpiece of science fiction, while the theatrical release is understandably average. Never before has there been such a tragic case of a film falling victim to studio cuts. I've decided to review the filmmaker's vision as the theatrical release should never have been made.
The greatness of this film is that it succeeds on so many levels. Even if you don't like hard sci-fi or the fantasy aspects, you can love it for being one of the best action movies ever made.
'300' is an action epic unlike you have ever seen. It's wildly bold and creative with it's breathtaking visuals, and it's innovative and original with it's action. The story is over-the-top in a way a good tall-tale should be. It's tense, exciting, and inspiring. What's also great is that it's a macho story that women can and do love. No ridiculous testosterone buffoonery here. Bloody, gory, and violent, and also glorious, beautiful, and majestic! '300' is a visual masterpiece and a stunningly imaginative example of what films can be. It is utterly amazing.
