I've seen this movie about a hundred times, and I'm still not sick of it. Honestly. The script is as solid as they come. John Travolta is awesome as Vega, I really can't think of any other actors who could play that part. every single part is cast to perfection (even the 'delightfully shit' performance by Tarantino himself, as ex mobster Jimmie).
The movie is chronologically scrambled, leaving the viewer to piece it together once the credits start rolling. For example, the final shot (chronologically) is smack bang in the middle of the film.
One of the greatest movies of all time. If Tarantino sold out tomorrow, it wouldn't matter, because this is a masterpiece.
When 'Fight Club' was released in 1999, it was branded a flop. Hardly anyone went to see it, and all the reviews went along the lines of 'nihilistic macho shit'. But the audiences who did manage to catch it in the cinema got it. They loved it. And so, in the years since it has developed a cult following, and is now branded one of THE masterpieces of modern cinema. And righfully so, it's a stunner. The film is about an office monkey with insomnia. A man terribly bored with his life. Then when he finds the one thing that makes his life complete (going to support groups since you ask) is ruined by a girl named Marla Singer, he meets a man called Tyler Durden. He and Tyler start up an underground group called 'Fight Club' where, guessably, men fight each other for 'as long as they have to'. And in a sick, twisted kind of way, it's actually quite funny. Whether it's seeing Meatloaf with humongous man boobs, or Tyler shouting 'Run Forrest, Run!' at a man he has just threatened to kill, you're bound to laugh at least once. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are superb, the best duo of the nineties since John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson in 'Pulp Fiction'. Though the fighting in 'Fight Club' isn't very frequent, it is violent. Blood and broken teeth aplenty. Anyone interested in modern cinema HAS to watch 'Fight Club' at some point. It's essential viewing, and as close to perfect as an American movie can get.
How can you fault 'This is Spinal Tap'? It ticks all the boxes that make a perfect comedy movie, and it just might be the best comedy movie of all time. There is a wide range of humor, most notably, the interiews with the 'band' ,helmed by a fantastic Rob Reiner. More or less all of the dialogue is improvised, making each scene seem fresh, and unworked, and just plain realistic. Genius is a label that gets thrown around a lot these days, but if one comedy film deserves that label, it's 'This is Spinal Tap'.
The only time I've been as excited as i was leaving the cinema after watching 'No Country for Old Men' was when I saw Star Wars Episode IV, when i was three. A killer script combined with skillful, arty directing and a fantastic cast make this a future cult classic.
It's one of those genre bending films that is weird, funny, and utterly amazing. All of the main actors in this give off realistic performances, which works well in front of the wacky background that is the film. Also deserving a mention (seeing also as his name is in the title) is John Malovich himself. He plays himself, in all manner of strange situations, and the way he goes about it is awesome.
The film makes good use of 1st person shots, slightly remeniscent of the opening sequence of 'Halloween'.
You will either love this movie, or be severely creeped out by it, but there's only one way to find out.
Where should I start with City of God? There is absolutely nothing I can say that will describe the feel of the movie, and how astonishing it is. The film told by one man, Rocket, a teenage photographer in the City of God, a Rio de Janeiro slum famed for its violence. As the film progresses, it is sometimes sidetracked by Rocket's narration, telling us something about a character (or apartment, as in one segment of the movie) that is essential for us to know to understand the rest of the story. The film is set over two decades, the sixties and the seventies, and each decade has it's own specific look and atmosphere. In parts though, the film can be very unsettling. Most notably a scene where two children must decide whether they want to be shot in the hand or the foot, surely one of the most tense moments in 21st century cinema. The best part of City of God though, is that it looks real. All of the actors are brilliant, and the costume design is awesome. The attention to detail here is shocking. Forget 'Scarface', 'City of God' is the one you want.
One of my all time favourite films. Spielberg is the star here, but all of the actors (yes even Tom Cruise) do fantastically well, making this a great sci-fi thriller.
There isn't much you can say about Die Hard. It's just the greatest action movie ever made, and made a star of Bruce Willis. Even three sequels failed to damage the reputation of this brilliant actioner. Yippee-ki-Yay motherfucker.
About as faithful an adaptation as fans could have hoped for, but unfortunately, those who haven't read the graphic novel will find themselves a bit lost.
