The Hours 2002, PG-13)
One of the most accomplished adaptations of a book I've ever seen. Not only the titular text, but Woolf's Mrs Dalloway. It's impossible to choose which of the three lead actresses is most stunning in their role. The whole piece, cast, script, cinematography, the lot, is exactly why cinema (the art form which Woolf accurately predicted was fit for much more than mere depiction) exists. If you aren't close to tears at one point, you have no soul. |

La Vie en Rose (La Mome) 2007, PG-13)
An utterly mesmerising performance from Marion Cotillard, which does justice to the utterly fascinating story of Piaf's life. Unless you're not a fan of Piaf's music, the soundtrack will ensure that you are in floods of tears as the credits roll. A heartbreaking and massively engaging drama which is only let down slightly by the excessive use of editing between different time frames. Similarly one gets the impression that towards the end much has been edited out, which creates a slightly disjointed narrative for the final 20 minutes. Nonetheless an utter must see. |
