Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) 2001,  R)
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
I can't say enough about this film. Audrey Tautou's is utterly captivating - each subtle shift in her facial expression conveys a thousand words, making us feel just what she's feeling. The script is delightfully entertaining - exactly the right blend of comedy & romance, with a touch of mystery. And Jean-Pierre Jeunet's use of color in his direction makes each scene jump off the screen. Hands down, this is my favorite movie of all time. I could watch it over and over and never tire of it. Love it, love it, love it! I want to name my future daughter after the title role... ;)

Once 2007,  R)
Once
The moment I exited the theater, all I could think about was getting my hands on the soundtrack ASAP. I was able to track down the last copy after hitting a couple mega-stores, and I've had it on repeat ever since. This small-budget ($100,000) film is a brilliantly simple story about an Irish street performer and his newfound immigrant (Czech) friend who helps him record his music. It's a musical that manages to incorporate its songs into each scene without seeming phony or staged (refreshing!) The characters are charmingly flawed - you feel their emotions flow through their songs and you become wrapped up in each note. And you're left wanting more, yet content knowing that the film ends the way it should. What more could you ask for? Besides, you can always go buy the soundtrack and relive each precious scene :)

Almost Famous
According to Kate Hudson, Cameron Crowe can be infuriatingly perfectionistic in his direction. Clearly his methodology pays off. I love everything about this movie - Frances McDormand's hilarious hippy parenting, Patrick Fugit's endearing between-take comments that were kept in the dialogue, Zooey Deschanel's adolescent angst ("FECK YOU!"), and let's not forget the soundtrack! Crowe wrote the Fever Dog tunes w/ his wife & Heart alum Nancy Wilson. What makes this film even more amazing is that the film is loosely based on Cameron Crowe's life. He toured with The Eagles and wrote for Rolling Stone at age 15 - and his mom made him celebrate Christmas in July ;) This is in my top 5 movies of all time, and is to blame for my uncontrolable urge to cry out "PURPLE - Your aura, it's purple... PURPLE!" every time someone mentions the color ;)

LOVED this movie - Going immediately into my all-time-faves.. do not pass go, maybe collect $200, I don't care. I laughed out loud along w/ the rest of the crowd, and must go see it again b/c we tended to drown out a bit of the follow-up dialogue w/ our laughter. Very smart script, brilliant performances on all parts, awesomely quirky soundtrack - what more could you ask for?

Simply amazing. Emile Hirsch is spectacular... inspiring, talented, and a shining light. Harden is her usual annoying yet impeccable self, and Catherine Keener is a joy as always :) I loved Jena Malone's narration, and the direction was beautiful - Sean Penn never ceases to amaze me! Oh yeah, did I mention the soundtrack? Great song choices, and Eddie Vedder's originals really fit the feel of the film and amplify the emotions of the characters. I especially loved that the credits listed the quotes Hirsch's character cited. This film makes you really want to reevaluate the way you live your life, and I think everyone should see it!

I never tire of watching this fast-talking classic and you will love it too! If you can keep up with the dialogue, you'll be rolling with laughter through the entire 92 minutes. Rosalind Russel is a refreshing shift from the typical feminine roles of the time, with her spit-fire attitude and biting wit. She takes charge and proves that women can do whatever men can, and we do it better! :)

An all-time fave. I even have a postcard w/ the ending scene sitting on the table w/ the cake: "Make a wish..." "It already came true!" :) Hilarious performance by Anthony Michael Hall, and Gedde Watanabe's one-liners will echo in my brain forever! Also mortifyingly funny are the comments from the crazy grandparents: "Look, Fred, she's gotten her boobies...and they're so PERKY!" ("I can't believe my grandmother actually felt me up" ;) Too many to recall here but enough to keep anyone entertained the whole way through!
