The Remains of the Day
My Favorite.
Indeed I have deeply admire Sir Hopkins. He is one of the best actors of all time. He is great in this film; an acting academy, you may call it.
This Film has two brilliant scenes. 1- when Ms Kenton tell the butler his father has passed away, a back-lighting scene with perfect acting and directing. 2- The scene when Ms Kenton asks which book the butler is reading. very cruel and romantic scene. and despite this film is a love story, there is not a scene of romance in the whole movie, and this is smart!
78
The Reader 2008,  R)
The Reader
Like the minimalism of the movie and also I appreciate the great story. I used to hate Winslet but after "Eternal sunshine ..." and this movie I'm going to like her. Great performance in this movie.

Gran Torino 2008,  R)
Gran Torino
one of the bests of Mr. Eastwood.
80
Conspiracy 2001,  R)
Conspiracy
Simple, Slow and Real. One of the best of WW2 ever. Do u ever ask yourself "how can I make a fascinating 90 minutes movie, all in a limited location like a conference room and showing just a meeting?" u may not success doing it but "Frank Pierso" has done it. "Conspiracy" is full of well actings, good detailed subjects, astonishing script and again well actings!
I love it.
81
Valkyrie 2008,  PG-13)
Valkyrie
Despite of the poor casting, I like this film very much. I think after "Downfall" this is the best film which can create a very good atmosphere about the late years of WW2. I appreciate the costume designing and Set Decoration. They are shown very realistic. Cinematography is done great and totally the film is performed in its best way which the role of Bryan Singer is he reason of that!
I love the Scene where the SS officer is going to capture Goebbels. marvelous Goebbels Styled dialogue whit the telephone in his hand: "Are you dedicated in National Socialism Major?" Then he gives the phone to the officer and we hear the tremendous voice of Adolf Hitler which says: "Do you recognize my voice?" :) This is smart!
82
Revanche 2008,  Unrated)
Revanche
My Favorite. I love the man's character and I appreciate the script and cinematography. I like the slowness of second part, cause it makes the story more real.
And another thing: one of the best Death Scenes ever.
83
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels 1999,  R)
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Guy Ritchie is the most lunatic director that I've seen in my 29 years of life :) Even more than Quentin Tarantino!
:) This is a brilliant, smart and funny with so many intelligent quotes.
84
Bugsy 1991,  R)
Bugsy
one of my top 20's. The performance is perfect. I love the script and also directing. Bugsy, himself is one my favourite characters too!
The sequence where Bugsy is reading newspaper in his house at the dinner table is one of the best scenes ever made in cinema history!

I admire Warren Beatty after watching this film, and I don't know why, but he reminds me of "Nader Azad" somehow!
85
Il y a Longtemps que Je T'aime (I've Loved You So Long) 2008,  PG-13)
Il y a Longtemps que Je T'aime (I've Loved You So Long)
My Favourite. I love the tranquillity of this movie. slow, real and smooth.

This is the kind of films I appreciate. ---> I think a film tell the stories about a period of sb's life. All the events was happened in past or will be happen in future, now, when you are watching this period of protagonist's life, it is just a usual moments of life. like our moments that we have them every day.

The actresses are wonderful. I just discover Kristin Scott Thomas by this film.

Üç Maymun (Three Monkeys) 2008,  Unrated)
Üç Maymun (Three Monkeys)
My Favourite.
The casts done well. Good directing and amazing cinematography. I love the frames and pictures.

Haven't seen so many Turkish films, but I'm sure it was the best one for me.
87
12 2007,  PG-13)
12
Brilliant. One of the best Russian film I've seen ever (of course not many I've seen!)
Another Great Idea (and script) about "The Judgement". (It's odd! I've seen two other amazing masterpieces about the judgement this year which with this movie they are all in my favourite list now! The two others are: The movie "About Eli" by "Asghar Farhadi" and The Play "Cho's Manifest" by "Mohammad Rahmanian"
The Performances and Directing is teachable. and I also like The Soundtrack, Cinematography and certainly the Film Editing.
Tickling me to see Sidney Lumet's "Twelve angry men".
88
1984 (Nineteen Eighty-Four) 1984,  R)
1984 (Nineteen Eighty-Four)
"Nineteen Eighty-Four" is One of the hardest novels to be fitted for the films. Despite of the very glorious images in the book, which is the wish of every director to re-make them in his film, the concept and idea of the book, is an impossible matter to be completely inserted in the movie and subsequently transfer to the spectator. As an example the lines of book which Winston Smith is reading the Goldstein's Book (chapter 17), which in my idea is the concept core of the book too, has been summarized and also immolate in just two sentences in this movie. (Certainly not a weak point but an inevitable).
However, I like this movie and I adore it. Because every director can just make the scenes of the book with a big production's visual effects and basically fall in narrating the theme of the book. But "Michael Radford" has done a great job. The film is simple and unassuming. He hasn't incarcerated himself in the glamorous of the pictures, but simply tells the idea of the book. (Orwell's widow, who had the film's right, agreed to allow the film to be produced only under the condition that no futuristic special effects be used. (Such a conscious move!)
I wish the movie was made in black and white, as the director and the cinematographer originally wanted.
Also the director, as the screenwriter, has done a greater job too. He has written a complex script which is a shiny piece for this kind of books. There are so many great ideas which there are not in the novel, and he has created them for the film. Such as making a kind of "Salute" for worshipping the BB, changing the word "comrade" to "brother or sister" (a perfect transform in my idea) and describing that the photos which have been taken secretly from the sex relationship between Winston and Julia will be used in proletariats.
The third great work of Radford is casting. (He, himself, has chosen the main characters.) When you read the book, you just imagine someone like "John Hurt" as "Winston Smith". He had a great performance. I don't know if "Anthony Hopkins" could do better than "Richard Burton" as O'Brien or not, but I thinks Burton was a right choice. Poor Burton even couldn't success watching the final picture in the theatre, as he died two months before the opening night.
I like this movie, but if you haven't read the book yet, don't you ever dare to watch the first scene even! The one who hasn't read the book won't get the movie at all.
89
A History of Violence 2005,  R)
A History of Violence
My Favourite. I like the Plot and the directing and I also praise Viggo Mortensen and William Hurt.
In my opinion scene on the stairs is one of the most brilliant Sex Scene ever.
... and I admire these lines:
"... Do you like being married? Does it work for you? I can't see it working for me. I never felt the urge, you know? A lot of great looking women in the world. I never met one made me want to give up all the others..."

Shabe Yalda (Yalda Night) 2001,  Unrated)
Shabe Yalda (Yalda Night)
Masterpiece.
91
The Conversation 1974,  PG)
The Conversation
"Francis Ford Coppola" is the only director who is the maker of two movies among my top 10 and I can hardly believe this genius made "the conversation" just before his masterpiece "GF II". (Which one should be praised? "Godfather 2" which were made in a busy schedule of Coppola or "The Conversation", a much lighter production before a huge one? Or we should praise Coppola, himself as a brave, peppy young director who own the 70's Hollywood Cinema's Glory. (and a question: what happened to Coppola after 70's?!)
I like "The Conversation" so much and itâ??s one of my favorites. Everything is in the correct place in this film, specially the directing. (There are some story holes, but you can easily connive them).
"The Conversation" reminds me of Antonioni's "Blowup"; both relies on some clues (images in "Blowup" and sounds in "The Conversation") to tell the whole story of a crime.
And just for fun, imagine that: (if there werenâ??t any age problem) "Al Pacino" played the role of "Harry Caul" instead of "Gene Hackman"! I know, for sure, "Hackman" was the better choice and I admire his acting in this movie, but I've loved to watch that movie too!
92
Love in the Afternoon 1957,  G)
Love in the Afternoon
One of my Favourites.
After a long time I saw a movie which made me feel good!
I admire Billy Wilder's scripts, specially his dialogues.
and I think 55-year-old Gary Cooper, was definitely a right choice for his role and this is the only way that the script will work!

I like this line:
"Claude Chavasse: In Paris people eat better, and in Paris people make love, well, perhaps not better, but certainly more often. "

aaaaaaa.... and, yes I love Audrey Hepburn for sure.
93
Rio Bravo 1959,  Unrated)
Rio Bravo
My first movie of John Wayn and I think it is a good start.
Rio Bravo is one my favourits. It is one my few westerns which got a "real story". it's hero introducing us, while beating up, he is not a perfect western hero and has his weaknesses. The story developed the characters well and I thinkg this the second best of Howard Hawks as a director (after Scarface). Just imagine that this is a hollywood western, full of stars, and it has only two Close-Up in it!
I love the character of "Stumpy" :) He is great .

I like these lines:
"Feathers: I thought you were never going to say it.
John T. Chance: Say what?
Feathers: That you love me.
John T. Chance: I said I'd arrest you.
Feathers: It means the same thing, you know that. "
----
and the last words...
Maybe I should do as Quentin Tarantino does... He has said once that before he enters into a relationship with a girl, he always shows her 'Rio Bravo' and if she doesn't like it, there is no relationship.
=)

Once 2007,  R)
Once
My Favourite. Simple and Honest.
95

Crazy Heart 2009,  R)
Crazy Heart
My Favourite. Simple and honest. Brilliant acting and an accurate directing.
97
The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos) 2009,  R)
The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos)
My Favourite. Brilliant, Really smart! A must see.

A real "Director Film". He has controled every milliseconds of his film and this is impossible. (at this point, I can compare Juan José Campanella to Asghar Farhadi)

I can not say how much I love the acting and the atmosphere, everything I say is nonsense. you have to watch this movie and then find out the feeling that I can not talk about.

The script is not perfect, but it's good with a very very smart ending. The five minutes "Football Stadium Plan-Sequence" is a magic which is equal to the famous Plan-Sequence of "La môme" for me.

(This particular scene was filmed in the stadium of football club Huracán, and took three months of pre-production, three days of shooting and nine months of postproduction. Two hundred extras took part in the shooting, but visual effects were used in order to show a fully packed stadium with nearly fifty thousand fans. "Wikipedia")

I love the soundtrack too... and also the cinematography and editing. (surely not the Make Up!)

I love this line:

"Choose carefully... memories are all we end up with... at least pick the nice ones..."

and also this shocking dialogue:

"... Please... Tell him at last talk to me..."

98
Roman Holiday 1953,  Unrated)
Roman Holiday
My Favourite.

Such a good Ending for those years of Hollywood!

and these lines exactly are mine(!):

- reporter: Which of the cities visited did Your Highness enjoy the most?

- Princess Ann: Each, in its own way, was unforgettable. It would be difficult to - Rome! By all means, Rome. I will cherish my visit here in memory as long as I live.

Leaving Las Vegas 1995,  R)
Leaving Las Vegas
A man tries to forget his life, his body and his mind and he decides to drink to death! a very nice story! tangible!
One of my favourites. Nobody can be like Nicolas Cage in this film ever!

I adore this Line:

"I don't remember if I started drinking cause my wife left me or my wife left me cause I started drinking..."
101
Two for the Road 1967,  Unrated)
Two for the Road
My Favorite. Avant-guard. Older than his age.
The Best Film of Audry Hepburn. This is a Life Teaching movie.
The Sunbirth Scene at hotel is great.

I adore these lines:

"We can't even fight in peace!"
-------------------------------------------------------------
Mark Wallace: What kind of people just sit in a restaurant and don't say one word to each other?
Joanna Wallace: Married people?
-------------------------------------------------------------
102
A Separation 2011,  PG-13)
A Separation
This is life, with all the truths of it.
One of the best Persian movie ever.
... And for sure the previous film of Asghar Farhadi (About Elly-2008) was better. IMO.

I love the script, directing, acting and I also adore the final Plan-sequence.
103
The American 2010,  R)
The American
My Favorite. I like the tranquility of this film, and I also like the storyline, directing and soundtrack. Nice choice for George.

This conversation between Jack and Clara (The prostitute) is great:

Jack: You don't have to act.
Clara: Act?
Jack: You might have to with other clients, but you don't have to with me... I came here to get pleasure, not to give it.
104
Brick and Mirror (Khesht va Ayeneh) 1965,  Unrated)
Brick and Mirror (Khesht va Ayeneh)
A "Citizen Kane" in Persian Cinema. So much older than it's age.
105
Lenny 1974,  R)
Lenny
Well made.

Maybe if this film wasn't competing with the giants like "Godfather: Part II", "China Town" and "Conversation" (wow! what a year for cinema history!) we could see some Oscars for it; including Dustin Hoffman, who performed one of his best roles ever, Valerie Perrine as the actress and also Bob Fosse, who made this film as good as he could!

also the script, cinematography and make up of this film are adorable.

I love the one-take master shot scene of Lenny doing his act in a raincoat while he is high. It's magically Played by Hoffman and made by Fosse.
I also like this Lenny Bruce dialogue: "The problem is we always expect women to be a combination sunday school teacher, and $500-a-night hooker!"

and just to know: "Al Pacino was considered for the lead role"!!!
106
My Blueberry Nights 2007,  PG-13)
My Blueberry Nights
I like the mini stories of this film and also the dialogues. I don't know why exactly I like this film, maybe because of my own situation while watching it.
I like these lines:

Elizabeth: [wiping her tears] How do you say goodbye to someone you can't imagine living without? I didn't say goodbye.
[pause]
Elizabeth: I didn't say anything. I just walked away.
--------------
Elizabeth: It took me nearly a year to get here. It wasn't so hard to cross that street after all, it all depends on who's waiting for you on the other side.
107
Shirin 2008,  Unrated)
Shirin
My Favorite. One of the smartest films ever and one of top 5 films of Kiarostami, IMO.

From Idea to performance it's brilliant.
Consider that you always see a film as an audience and this time you see the audiences watching a film, instead of the real film.

I wish I could see this film in a Cinema Saloon because it is extraordinarily amazing sitting in a cinema watching the silver screen, and seeing another cinema audience reactions.

and also good job of Mohammad Rahmanian who did great in adapting the story. The parts and sentences which he has written from the "Khosro & Shirin" Poem is marvelous.

I adore all those 113 professional actresses who had a role in this film. for 75% of them this is the best film they've played in their life.
108

Nobody's Fool
My Favorite. Great moments and a great Paul Newman.
112
Hud 1963,  Unrated)
Hud
My Favorite.
Paul Newman is the best Hollywood actor of all time IMO, and this is one of his bests.

I love the story so much and I admire directing, script and all the acting of this film. (specially Patricia Neal)
and beside all, The OST is something so much wiser than it's age and it's marvelous.

These are some great lines:

Lonnie Bannon: It's a lonely old night isn't it?
Hud Bannon: Ain't they all?
--------------
Homer Bannon: It don't take long to kill things, not like it takes to grow.
--------
Hud Bannon: My momma used to love me, but she died.
-------------
Homer Bannon: Hud, how'd a man like you come to be a son to me?
---------
Hud Bannon: I'll remember you, honey. You're the one that got away.
----------
Hud Bannon: I'll do anything to make you trade him.
Alma Brown: No thanks. I've done my time with one cold-blooded bastard, I'm not looking for another.
Hud Bannon: Too late, honey, you already found him.
----------------
Hud Bannon: [Last line] You know something Fantan? This world is so full of crap, a man's gonna get into it sooner or later whether he's careful or not.
-----------
113
Cool Hand Luke 1967,  PG)
Cool Hand Luke
My Favorite.
It's all about being cool; I call it being Apathetic. and never ever an actor in Hollywood could play such a character as Paul Newman did.
Newman, with those smiles introduced us a new way of acting by presenting in this film.
The story is a masterpiece, directing is done well and the other items in this film are at the right places.

The film famous quote: "What we got here is... failure to communicate." is my 3rd favorite of all times after the quote of GWTW (Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn) and GF ("I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse.")

115
Midnight in Paris 2011,  PG-13)
Midnight in Paris
My Favorite.
Hey! Woody! You are now 75 and still making fantastic films! You seem like "Benjamin Button" to me or a Bordeaux wine!

You are the only director/Writer who can make this fantasy as well as "Midnight in Paris"... Mazel Tov!

Don't know which of your brilliant line of this film should I pick for my favorite, cause there are so many! but this one I believe more:

Paul: Sex and alcohol. Fuels the desire kills the performance, according to the Bard.
116
Swingers 1996,  R)
Swingers
My favorite.
Every man between 18 to 35 have to see this, cause it's so so true.

Very well made and also good script and acting.

I like these lines:
---------------------
Mike: So how long do I wait to call?
Trent: A day.
Mike: Tomorrow.
Sue: Tomorrow, then a day.
Trent: Yeah.
Mike: So two days?
Trent: Yeah, I guess you could call it that, two days.
Sue: Definitely, two days is like industry standard.
Trent: You know I used to wait two days to call anybody, but now it's like everyone in town waits two days. So I think three days is kind of money. What do you think?
Sue: Yeah, but two's enough not to look anxious.
Trent: Yeah, two's enough not to look anxious. But I think three days is kind of money. You know because you...
Mike: Yeah, but you know what, mabey I'll wait 3 weeks. How's that? And tell her I was cleaning out my wallet and I just happened to run into her number.
Charles: Then ask her where you met her.
Mike: Yeah, I'll ask her where I met her. I don't remember. What does she look like? And then I'll asked if we fucked. Is that... would that be... T, would that be the money?
Trent: You know what. Ha ha ha Mike, laugh all you want but if you call too soon you might scare off a nice baby who's ready to party.
Mike: Well how long are you guys gonna wait to call your babies?
Trent, Sue: Six days.
----------------------
Rob: You don't look at the things that you have, you only look at the stuff that you don't have. Those guys are right about you - you're money.
Mike: Then why won't she call?
Rob: She won't call because you left. she's got her own life to deal with, man, and that's in New York... alright? And she's a sweet girl, and I love her to pieces, but fuck her, man. You gotta get on with your life. You gotta let go of the past. And Mikey, when you do, I'm telling you: the future is beautiful, alright? Look out the window. It's sunny every day here. It's like manifest destiny. Don't tell me we didn't make it. We made it! We are here. And everything that is past is prologued to this. All of the shit that didn't kill us is only - you know, all that shit. You're gonna get over it.
Mike: How did you get over it? I mean, how long did it take?
Rob: Sometimes it still hurts. You know how it is, man. It's like, you wake up every day and it hurts a little bit less, and then you wake up one day and it doesn't hurt at all. And the funny thing is, is that, this is kinda weird, but it's like, it's like you almost miss that pain.
Mike: You miss the pain?
Rob: Yeah, for the same reason that you missed her... because you lived with it for so long.
------------------------------
Trent: I don't want you to be the guy in the PG-13 movie everyone's *really* hoping makes it happen. I want you to be like the guy in the rated R movie, you know, the guy you're not sure whether or not you like yet. You're not sure where he's coming from. Okay? You're a bad man. You're a bad man, Mikey. You're a bad man, bad man.
------------------------------
Mike: Okay, so what if I don't want to give up on her?
Rob: You don't call.
Mike: But you said I don't call if I wanted to give up on her.
Rob: Right.
Mike: So I don't call either way?
Rob: Right.
Mike: So what's the difference?
Rob: There is no difference right now. See, Mike, the only difference between giving up and not giving up is if you take her back when she wants to come back. But you can't do anything to make her want to come back. In fact, you can only do stuff to make her not want to come back.
Mike: So the only difference is if I forget about her or just pretend to forget about her?
Rob: Right.
Mike: Well that sucks.
Rob: Yeah, it sucks.
Mike: So it's just like a retroactive decision, then? I mean I could, like, forget about her and then when she comes back make like I just pretended to forget about her?
Rob: Right. Although probably more likely the opposite.
Mike: What do you mean?
Rob: I mean at first you're going to pretend to forget about her, you'll not call her, I don't know, whatever... but then eventually, you really will forget about her.
Mike: Well what if she comes back first?
Rob: Mmmm... see, that's the thing, is somehow they know not to come back until you really forget.
Mike: There's the rub.
Rob: There's the rub.

The Ides of March
*My Favorite.*
Finally I saw a very unique adapted screen-play after a long time.
I really appreciate George Clooney; not because of his marvelous role in this film, not because of his brilliant directing and not because of this shining screen-play. Because he has found himself and knows what he is doing. he has shown us, he is a real artist.

I really like this Machiavellian plot. I like the tempo of the film and I admire both Clooney's and Ryan Gosling's characters in the story.
and to finish, I have to say that I'm going to like Ryan Gosling very much. The future is for him indeed.

Carnage 2011,  R)
Carnage
My Favorite.
Again the Smart Polanski with one of his "Apartment Films"!
Again the Smart Polanski with one of his "Static Plays"!

I like the play "God of Carnage" by Yasmina Reza" and I think the only one who can make a film of it, is Polanski. and he did it well.

The Acting are well done... and also the script and indeed the Directing.
Watching it made me feel good!
