My Favorite Movies

1
Pi 1998,  R)
Pi
Brilliant, high-concept, hyperkinetic, and heart-stopping. Still my favorite movie ever. The stark black-and-white imagery, the music, everything is perfect. I can watch this any time and never get bored.
2
Stalker 1979,  Unrated)
Stalker
This movie resonates with me in a way I cannot explain. It's slow, quiet, meditative, and beautiful. The music and cinematography are great. It's just about perfect, what else can I say?
3
Paprika 2006,  R)
Paprika
From the very first few minutes of the movie, the wild music and delirious imagery grabbed hold of me and didn't let go until it was all over. Anything dealing with dreams attracts me, and this movie is just a hell of a lot of icing on an already glorious cake. My only complaint is that it might be a bit too short...
4
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) 2008,  PG-13)
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2)
For me, I thought it was fucking PERFECT. Hilarious moments, great action, and more monsters and creatures than you can shake an oversized revolver at. Absolutely brilliant.
5
Brick 2006,  R)
Brick
Not exactly how highschool really was, but certainly how it felt. Noir to the core.
6
MirrorMask 2005,  PG)
MirrorMask
Great animation, and Neil Gaiman's writing is spot-on.
7
Snatch 2001,  R)
Snatch
A hilarious diamond caper with energy, style, and wit to spare. That's how it's done.
8
Tetsuo: The Ironman 1989,  Unrated)
Tetsuo: The Ironman
It's so violent and loud and disturbing, you just can't look away. I love it oh so very much...
9
Cloverfield 2008,  PG-13)
Cloverfield
So effing awesome. A lot of people will have problems with it, with the handheld camerawork and such, but I was loving every minute of it. I related far more with the characters than I was comfortable with, and that helped suck me in. The monster is far from camera-shy, and you see some frightening glimpses of the thing as it smashes its way through New York. I just love how they kept it from being like another mediocre Godzilla movie. Now if only I can find the music that plays during the end credits...
10
Donnie Darko 2001,  R)
Donnie Darko
One part love letter to the 80's. One part heightened teenage drama. One part mindfuck high-concept sci fi head trip. This movie will get inside you and refuse to leave.
11
The Fountain 2006,  PG-13)
The Fountain
Darren Aronofsky is my favorite director EVER. It's a romance first, sci fi film second, but it excels in both and is one of the most beautiful things I've ever watched...
12
The Fifth Element 1997,  PG-13)
The Fifth Element
I'll admit, I love this movie simply because it's an insane, funny sci fi flick with Bruce Willis in it, and because Milla Jovovich is insanely hot and mostly naked. I think those are good reasons, though!
13
28 Days Later 2002,  R)
28 Days Later
The movie that set out and succeeded to turn the zombie movie genre on its fucking head, and succeeded. Excellently filmed and heart-pounding.
14
28 Weeks Later... 2007,  R)
28 Weeks Later...
Holy crap. One of the few examples in which the sequel to a movie totally surpasses the original. So much faster, more thrilling, gorier, bloodier, and on a much larger scale than 28DL. I kept forgetting to breathe and my heart felt like it was going to beat its way out of my ribcage. I feel like I MUST see it again. 0_0
15
A Snake of June (Rokugatsu no hebi) 2002,  R)
A Snake of June (Rokugatsu no hebi)
Can I declare Shinya Tsukamoto my favorite Japanese director if I've only seen two of his films? I think so.
This movie is amazingly gorgeous, erotic, and not without its fair share of crazy what-the-fuckery. It's far more tame and much much MUCH easier on the eyes and ears than Tetsuo the Iron Man, and probably the most erotic thing I've ever watched. You cannot take your eyes off the screen. Ever. It's wonderful.
16
Dead Man 1995,  R)
Dead Man
I thought I'd reviewed this already? Geez, I guess not. This is one of my all time favorite movies, and another one of the few westerns I enjoy. Credit goes to Leif for introducing the film to me. It's slow, a bit weird, with a lot of subtle humor and strange undertones, hinting at something otherworldly the entire time. A true work of cinematic art, and of course Johnny Depp's acting is incredibly awesome, and the supporting cast is just as great. Also, Neil Young's guitar-only soundtrack just plain works...
17
The Proposition 2005,  R)
The Proposition
Beautiful. Poetic. Ultraviolent. Gripping. Australian. Best western ever. And I don't even like westerns.
18
3:10 to Yuma 2007,  R)
3:10 to Yuma
Movies like this and the Proposition are the reason why we need more badass westerns. This is definitely added to my shortlist of enjoyable westerns. The directing is excellent, the soundtrack badass, and all the actors put in strong performances, especially our two stars. Just really really really really freaking awesome.
19
American Psycho 2000,  R)
American Psycho
Morbidly funny, and Christian Bale's best role I've seen him in.
20
Marebito 2004,  R)
Marebito
Gets under your skin and won't stop creeping you out. My favorite horror movie.
21
Batman Begins 2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
The best comicbook movie I've seen so far.
22
Silent Hill 2006,  R)
Silent Hill
Not only is it the best videogame movie ever so far, it's also one of the best damn horror movies too. The special effects, monsters, and gore are just so amazing...
23
Le Pacte des loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf) 2001,  R)
Le Pacte des loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf)
Werewolves, nudity, fighting, and more! What's NOT to love?!
24
Bram Stoker's Dracula 1992,  R)
Bram Stoker's Dracula
This movie would've been perfect if Keanu Reeves were replaced with someone better, or at least knew how to act. Anthony Hopkins is my new favorite Van Helsing, and the movie's bizarre visual style makes it almost exactly the kind of horror story that I would want to do. Very very cool.
25
Evil Dead 2 1987,  R)
Evil Dead 2
Best of the Evil Dead Trilogy, like a live action episode of Looney Toons gone straight to hell.
26
Godzilla Vs. Biollante 1989,  PG)
Godzilla Vs. Biollante
In my opinion, the best of the Godzilla movies, and Biollante is one of the coolest monster designs ever.
27
Hellboy Animated: Blood and Iron 2007,  Unrated)
Hellboy Animated: Blood and Iron
It's about time Flixter got this film on their list. The second animated Hellboy film, which actually manages to surpass Sword of Storms. Vampires! Harpies! Werewolves! A giant minotaur-thing with detatchable fist! This movie is awesome, and just as great as the comics. Someone give the animators a bigger budget, though, so they can work more magic in the next one! This is direct-to-DVD moviemaking done right.
28
The Bourne Identity 2002,  PG-13)
The Bourne Identity
This seriously surprised me. I was expecting some terrible action movie, but what I got was a smart thriller with a total badass for a main character. He disarms a guy with a ballpoint pen! It was just incredibly good and never strayed into the clichés of your typical Hollywood movies. The Bourne series is great.
29
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) 2001,  R)
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
Probably the best French movie ever. Very stylish, well-directed, and the best feel-good heartwarming charming goofy funny movie ever. Absolutely perfect.
30
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot) 2002,  R)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot)
Very slow, quiet, and bloody. What can I say about it really? A kidnapping goes wrong and everything just goes downhill from there as two men searching for vengeance spiral downward into each other and the practically inevitable conclusion. A circle of violence.
31
Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)
Pan's Labyrinth
The second viewing made it even better. I didn't realize just how layered this movie is. It's Guillermo del Toro's masterpiece, revealing the significance and parallels between the real world and fairytales, and just expertly made. It leaves a lasting impression, and is highly imaginative. del Toro is a true artist...
32
The City of Lost Children (La Cité des Enfants Perdus) 1997,  R)
The City of Lost Children (La Cité des Enfants Perdus)
Absolutely freaking great. That's all I can say right now, I'm just a bit gobsmacked by how quirky and awesome it is.
33
Delicatessen 1991,  R)
Delicatessen
Very quirky, very funny, and full of just odd characters and moments. Nothing happens like you'd expect.
34
Day of the Triffids 1963,  Unrated)
Day of the Triffids
This movie does not deserve the rating I gave it, let that be known, but I loved it. A meteor shower one night blinds the greater majority of mankind and spread spores that grow into walking, gas-spewing, man-eating plants! Hokey acting, hokey science, hokey special effects, and uber-dramatic music ensues as our square-jawed hero must fight to survive as one of the few people with their eyesight still intact. It ain't War of the Worlds, but it's so much more entertaining than I expected it to be. This is classic science fiction right here, seemingly ripped straight from old pulp mags. Triffids are my new favorite plant monsters now.
35
FLCL (Fooly Cooly) 2000,  Unrated)
FLCL (Fooly Cooly)
I'll ignore the obvious. This is what got me back into anime and just animation in general after going through a dry spell: robots popping out of a kid's skull, guitars, puberty, and a rockin' soundtrack by the Pillows! I love you Gainax.
36
The Animatrix 2003,  Unrated)
The Animatrix
MUCH better than the actual trilogy, honestly. The animation is all quite insane and wonderful, the stories are GREAT, and the soundtrack is badass. Even if you hate the Matrix movies, if you enjoy animation you need to at least give this one a shot.
37
Hellboy 2004,  PG-13)
Hellboy
Watching it again, I realized just how much del Toro changed things from the comic. Then I realized how smart the changes are and how they didn't annoy me at all. This movie deserves more credit than it gets, and it just gets better and better each time you watch it.
38
Primer 2003,  PG-13)
Primer
When I first signed up for Flixster, this movie was recommended to me simply because I listed Pi as my favorite movie ever, and I can see how the two compare. They're still quite different, but that is by no means a bad thing. This is a perfect example of great, intelligent, low-budget sci fi, and also the best time travel movie ever.
39
The Thing 1982,  R)
The Thing
How did I go so long without seeing this fucking awesome movie? The music is great, the paranoia between characters is gripping, and the alien monstrocities themselves are brutal, disturbing things. Like a Resident Evil boss before Resident Evil even existed. Bloody great sci fi horror.
