Traitor - PG-13 At last a Thriller that's both intellectual and thrilling. Don Cheadle is pitch perfect again, this time in the role of an American Muslim swept up in the midst of a terrorist plot.
Though some plot twists and turns are a bit predictable, the majority of the film is just wonderful, hitting all the hot emotional buttons we are all subject to these days and setting forth the uneasy political entanglements our world now hangs from.
I should also mention that Guy Pierce, Jeff Daniels, Neil McDonough, and Said Taghmaoui are all great in their performances and make the material come alive. They are a joy to watch.
This is a thinking man's film with a batch of thrills, if you like that kind of film, as I do, then "Traitor" is for you! Enjoy.

Tropic Thunder - R This is a funny, funny, funny film. I don't know who to praise first, Ben Stiller for writing and directing it, Tom Cruise for stealing it, Robert Downey Jr. for the most hilarious send up of a black-face performer, or Jack Black for, well, just being Jack Black. I don't think it matters, what does matter is you'll laugh your butt off.
This is a "run to see" feel good film, a true home run for Stiller! Enjoy!

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - PG The Clone Wars, an animated Star Wars tale for children, tells a story of the time between Star Wars 2 and Star Wars 3, when the universe was deep into the war.
I liked it. I didn't expect to. The voices of the original actors, for the most part have been replaced, the animation was not what I expected from Lucas Film, and the story was contrived. Yet despite all that, I was sucked right into it.
This film is the predecessor to the animated series that hits TV later this year and sets up the whole premise beautifully, and it adds a new major character Ahsoka Tano, a precocious 14 year old Padawan designed to win the hearts of the young audiences that this series is designed to appeal to.
Changing the live action Star Wars world into an animated one was, I imagine, a daunting task filled with endless choices.
I can see Lucas sitting at his desk worrying over little details like the look of the hair style drawn on Skywalker and the exact size of each explosion.
Check it out if you like the Star Wars universe and can follow it into an animated vision.

Swing Vote - PG-13 Through a strange twist of fate, the ultimate decision as to who wins the presidential election, comes down to one man's vote.
That's the set up of this implausible modern fairy tale. It's a Great concept for a Kevin Costner film, but after seeing it, I'm still left longing for another movie as winning as "Tin Cup" or "Field of Dreams", this isn't it.
Costner's character "Bud Johnson", is a little too dumb to pull off his ultimate change and he's sometimes so coarse in the role that he's just not likable enough for you to cheer him on.
The movie is highly watchable though and has a lot of great laughs, the problem is it's just as forgettable once you leave the theater.
The winners in this film are Bud's brilliant daughter, played by newcomer Madeline Carroll, and the affable Kelsey Grammer as the President. Losers are Dennis Hopper, horribly miscast and misused as the other presidential candidate, Nathan Lane, as a nasty campaign manager, Judge Reinhold, who is left holding a beer bottle and scratching his head, Stanley Tucci, who's not allowed to fill the screen with his dynamic presence, and the exceptional Mare Winningham, totally underused as Bud's ex.
The film is worth seeing for the laughs and the world view of what's happening in our country, though I wouldn't run to the theater to see it.

Brideshead Revisited - PG-13 Another droning 'British Drawing Room Drama', made all the more boring by an uninspired, agonizing slow script brought barely to life by director Julian Jarrold.
I credit the people who worked so hard behind the scenes to recreate the beauty of the period, clothing, hairstyles, sets, and music with creating the only interesting things about the film.
The acting is so far off and every character's emotions are so totally non-existent that you as the audience have to make them up in your mind.
The Masterpiece Theater television incarnation of this story was a superior drama, this version should have been sent directly to the DVD discount bins.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe (The X Files 2) - PG-13 I wanted to believe, but alas, I couldn't. The Truth Is Out There...this film is a huge disappointment. It's a slow boring piece that reeks of a bad episode of the popular series.
I was hoping this film would offer something intriguing, something dealing with earthshaking or otherworldly concepts, as the best tv episodes did, instead I got a dull, slow-paced kidnapping story with poor
acting by the series' stars.
They should have hung it up years ago, instead they tarnished a great show's memory. Stay Home.

Pineapple Express - R A classic stoner comedy mixed with a buddy film and a touch of action adventure. Seth Rogen is generating big laughs again only this time there's a constant joint hanging from his mouth and a buddy, James Franco, attached to his hip.
On the run from everyone including themselves, these two likable losers are barely able to stay straight long enough
to keep ahead of the bad guys.
Great comic performances all around with stand out Danny McBride (Foot Fist Way) as the indestructible drug dealing Red.
If you like this kind of stoner humor, this film was made for you. It's very well made and at times hysterically funny.

Step Brothers - R Hilarious and raunchy, this film filled with over the top performances by fearless actors is a fun fest of bad taste. Will Farrell and John C. Reilly comfortably join together again, this time to explore the relationship of first time 40 year old step brothers who have never grown past the age of 12, and they do it to perfection without a single misstep.

Every character is a comic gem in this wild romp, especially Kathryn Hahn as Ferrell's brother's wife. If you like this kind of Ferrell/Judd Apatow kind of humor, you'll love this film.

The Dark Knight - PG-13 This film is a Masterpiece. Director Christopher Nolan spared nothing in achieving the most epic film of the season. Filled with eye popping visuals and non-stop action, yet containing a story of depth and compelling ideas about morality, "The Dark Night" is certainly at the apex of its genre.

Heath Ledger gives the performance all his previous work was leading to and it will in all likeliness culminate in a posthumous Oscar, he was brilliant and then some. Christian Bale again proves his acting chops and breathes a very real life into the morally conflicted caped crusader. Everyone else is at the same level of performance and there's not a single misstep by any actor in this truly glorious film.

Run, don't walk to see this one, there won't be another film this good for a very long time.

Meet Dave - PG Another ho hum Eddie Murphy almost comedy. In his tradition of playing more than one character in a film, here he gives you two, Eddie the spaceship and Eddie the spaceship commander. Exciting stuff huh? Maybe if your ten or under. A few laughs and a great cast of under used actors round out the action. The real star of the piece is the effects department that makes the whole craziness seem somewhat seamlesss.
Not as bad as Pluto Nash, but very reminiscent of it. Drop the kids off in the theatre and step into another movie, you'll thank me for suggesting it. Sorry Eddie, but I'm still waiting for another 48 hours or Beverly
Hills Cop IV.

Mamma Mia! - PG-13 This film is going to be a mega hit. Especially if you're an ABBA fan. Meryl Streep is amazing, giving a performance that sets the screen afire with energy and excitement as she sings and dances her way into your heart.
Amanda Seyried is a fresh new face as the bride-to-be who secretly invites the three men who might be her father to the wedding, setting off the whole plot of the tale.
Pierce Brosnan (James Bond) is one of the dudes that slept with her mother, Streep's character, 20 years earlier and here he actually sings and dances and he almost pulls it off, but not quite, although who cares, the film is just a joy from start to finish.
If you want to rack up big points with the woman you love, drive right over to the theatre, sit her down, and at the right moment, when you both want to jump up singing and she's starting to tear with emotion, reach over and hand her a kleenex, smile and show her you understand. You'll own the night.
The movie is everything the play was and more, thanks to Tom Hanks and his wife, they produced it and didn't spare a cent doing it. The film's a dazzler. Enjoy.

Hancock - PG-13 Grab a Bottle o' Booze, go fight crime. Oh, and don't worry about how much damage you do doing it. Funny concept, funny execution. Another Great Summer Movie from Will Smith. A little slow getting into its story, but it takes off and delivers a very satisfying film experience with tremendous special effects by John Dykstra and great supporting performances by Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman. Fly on over to a theatre near you and catch a view. June 27, 2008

Journey to the Center of the Earth - PG I wanted to like this film because of the great 3D effects, but it was just too simplistic a story for anybody above the age of 12. Brendan Fraser, usually an actor who's fun to watch, sleep walked through this one and there was never any sense the characters were ever in danger. It is however, a decent family film that you can take the kids to, they'll enjoy the 3D effects June 26, 2008

Mongol - R An epic film in the "David Lean" tradition. Sergi Bodrov brings the life of Ginghis Khan to the widescreen with breathtaking spectacle and some very brilliant moments. I found myself drawn into the story from the very first visual. I particularly liked the way the subtitles integrated with the stunning visuals. Cast performances were stand out and the director showed a masters touch. This movie was nominated in the best foreign film category last year at the academy awards, it should have won. You'll like this movie, go see it while you can. June 20, 2008

Get Smart - PG-13 Ok, I loved this movie. Carell not only made Maxwell Smart his own, he actually improved upon him (no offense to the late great Don Adams). The movie is totally hilarious. It will remind you of what a good summer comedy should be. Go see it, run, don't walk. June 17, 2008

The Happening - R M. Night Shyamalan gives us a few really thrilling moments as he explores his darker side. Just what he was trying to create is still a mystery to me, but I enjoyed this experiment. It slowed down in the middle as his films are like to do, but it'll keep you watching the screen. June 14, 2008

Kung Fu Panda - PG Great Kids Film, exactly what it says it is. Brimming with good fun and terrific characters. Jack Black pulls out all the stops to create a fantastic new hero. Wish though that Pixar had done it. Warning: parts may be a bit dark for really young children. June 4, 2008

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - PG-13 Indy is back and he's aged perfectly, like a fine wine. This film is a home run! It's exactly what it's supposed to be, another 50's "Saturday Afternoon At The Movies" B-film. A worthy successor to its predecessors, filled with lots of excitement, great chases, narrow escapes, intriguing themes, bad insects, and wonderful characters.
Ford again plays Indy with his usual cool crafty style and with so much energy it's as though he hasn't aged a full twenty years. Shia LaBeouf, as Mutt Williams, a wannabe motorcycle tuff (ala Marlon Brando in "The Wild One") is just terrific helping Indy chase down the mythic crystal skull. Cate Blanchett, the story's Russian villain, is looking cold and tight enough in her short black hair and jumpsuit to pull the role off perfectly, and Karen Allen, back as Marion, is as spunky as ever.
You may hear some critics dump on this film, but ignore them, this is a fun film from start to finish. Go, enjoy, and then sit back and wait for the Mutt Williams franchise to take over where this story ends. Hail Indy!

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - PG The return of the Narnians heralds the coming of a great film. Darker, more interesting, and much more exciting than the original, Prince Caspian is just a wonderfully entertaining movie for all ages. May 14, 2008

The Fall - R From the Director of "The Cell," Tarsem Singh, this visually spectacular film was shot all over the world and took years to create. It takes you to places you've never been before on screen and treats you to visuals that will satisfy even the most jaded of viewers as it ties itself together with a touching story that will tug at your heartstrings. I recommend this film to everyone. May 10, 2008

Speed Racer - PG Emile Hursh comes out of the wild and jumps into a world of speed and color and fascinating characters in this trend setting blockbuster of a film from The Wachowski Brothers. It's a real treat for the eyes and a quick 2 1/4 hour escape May 7, 2008
