Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
This kept me in my chair. I couldn't leave it or look away. It's hypnotic and surprising.
2
Let the Right One In 2008,  R)
Let the Right One In
Superior vampire film. The friend/lover is a vampire idea has been done before, but not like this. I wanted it to go on and on. If you don't see this...you're missing something special. I suggest watching a copy with "theatrical subtitles", not the standard ones (big difference), and listen in the original Swedish. This film is thought-provoking and smart.
3
El Amor Brujo (Love, the Magician) 1986,  PG)
El Amor Brujo (Love, the Magician)
Incredibly intense. Wonderful flamenco dancing and music. Powerful emotions portrayed. Love, passion, betrayal, ghost. This is a great work by Carlos Saura.
4
The Fifth Element 1997,  PG-13)
The Fifth Element
This one was a surprise. It just kept right on coming. I can't recommend this any higher than five stars, but I would if I could. A real treat for sci-fi and action lovers. Good romance sprinkled on top.
5
Laws of Attraction 2004,  PG-13)
Laws of Attraction
Divorce lawyers in love. I can watch this again and again. I always get teary in the same parts, too.
6
The Notebook 2004,  PG-13)
The Notebook
Could it be any more romantic than this?
7
Sin City 2005,  R)
Sin City
I loved this. It was great to see Elijah Wood doing the cannibal character. Mickey Rourke was perfect. The best "noir" I've seen other than the classic noir. This is actually something different and most definitely not for everyone.
8
Allegro Non Troppo 1976,  PG)
Allegro Non Troppo
If the scene with the cat doesn't move you...you're missing out.
9
Searching for Bobby Fischer 1993,  PG)
Searching for Bobby Fischer
Not an action movie. An interesting look into the world of chess and competitive chess. Self-worth and values are the main idea here.
10
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington 1939,  Unrated)
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
This one still holds up and still has teeth.
11
Soapdish 1991,  PG-13)
Soapdish
I just love this movie. Loaded with talent and truly enjoyable.
12
Secretary 2002,  R)
Secretary
A heart-warming romance showing that there just might be somebody for everybody. Not for the closed-minded or judgmental folks. You'll know if you'll be OK with this movie in the opening scene. Maggie Gyllenhaal is wonderful and James Spader is his usual intense self.
13
Black Snake Moan 2007,  R)
Black Snake Moan
This was far better than I expected. Not a "great" film, but it got under my skin.
14
Jackie Chan's Who Am I? (Wo shi shei) (Who Am I?) 1998,  PG-13)

17
Mojave Moon 1996,  R)
Mojave Moon
Unusual enough, yet familiar. Good performances. Somewhat magical.
18
Grosse Pointe Blank 1997,  R)
Grosse Pointe Blank
Intelligent killer fun. Good performances from John Cusack and Minnie Driver. Professional killer goes to his high school reunion, tries to patch it up with sweetheart he ditched, and avoid getting killed. Smart writing, well performed.
19
Silverado 1985,  PG-13)
Silverado
Well-paced Western, good performances. Corny at times. Like most films in this genre it's a morality play. The good guys win.
20
True Romance 1993,  R)
True Romance
I love this movie. Brad Pitt as a stoner is perfect. This film is loaded with talented actors. The leads play off each other very well and their romance is a different one. I've watched this many times.
21
Mr. & Mrs. Smith 2005,  PG-13)
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
I loved the weaving of personal and professional in this movie. Angelina and Brad got the relationship language beautifully, right down to the body and facial looks. Tough love
22
Galaxy Quest 1999,  PG)
Galaxy Quest
Another one I don't get tired of seeing again. I'm glad that Sigourney was able to show off her body somewhat. She's said that's something she wanted to do in more than one interview I've seen/read. This is an enjoyable movie overall.
23
Ronin 1998,  R)
Ronin
Spies, terrorists, Europeans, treachery, friendship. Great car chases. This one really can be watched repeatedly.
24
Stargate 1994,  PG-13)
Stargate
Not even a guilty pleasure. I liked every actor in it (rare).
25
Dave 1993,  PG-13)
26
My Cousin Vinny 1992,  R)
My Cousin Vinny
I enjoy this every time I see it. Of course it's unbelievable, but it's a good watch.
27
Unforgiven 1992,  R)
Unforgiven
Showing the value of nonviolence by doing revenge for money, getting drunk and killing everybody. That aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and cried at the end.
28
Dominick and Eugene 1988,  PG-13)
Dominick and Eugene
Wonderful to see Ray Liotta in a sensitive role. Many teary moments in this, especially when the two brothers are together in scenes.
29
True Lies 1994,  R)
True Lies
Government spook and his wife. Humor, action, body count, atomic bomb in Florida. Lots of special effects. Watch this if you want diversion that will take you away for awhile.
30
The American President 1995,  PG-13)
The American President
Good performances, good script, engaging. I didn't lose interest. I'm a fan of Annette Bening, so I feel more favorable toward a movie she's in.
31
Sweet Home Alabama 2002,  PG-13)
Sweet Home Alabama
OK, so this is a guilty pleasure. I'm a sap for a good love story.
32
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) 1981,  PG)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark)
If you like action movies, this is a must-see. Karen Allen's character is someone I'd want to hang with. Totally enjoyable movie.
33
The Incredibles 2004,  PG)
The Incredibles
I was surprised how much I liked this film. There's actually something in it for everybody. It's smart, too, and doesn't pander or underestimate the audience.
34
Cavegirl 1985,  R)
Cavegirl
Really really stupid. That said, I've watched it countless times. I can't explain it. Cindy Ann Thompson sparkles as the cavegirl. Do NOT expect much from this film.
35
Temple Grandin 2010,  Unrated)
Temple Grandin
Based on a true story of an autistic woman who did remarkable things (hover mouse over movie title for synopsis). Claire Danes in a terrific performance. I wiped my eyes more than a few times. Very good film.
36
The Crying Game 1992,  R)
The Crying Game
Extraordinary and original for a movie. I've read some reviews that don't think this is special, but look at the pap they usually dish out to us.
37
To Kill A Mockingbird 1962,  Unrated)
To Kill A Mockingbird
Has anyone not seen this? If you haven't, you've missed a truly great film. Please be sure you've seen this at least once in your life.
38
Fortress 1986,  R)
Fortress
It all starts mundane enough, with a teacher and students in a one-room schoolhouse in Australia. Everybody does the things teachers and students do normally until the bad guys arrive and the rug is pulled out from everyday life.

As the scenes and situations shift and change, so do the roles and hierarchy of the teacher and students. The last part of the movie, when the teacher and students are involved with police is unnerving and heartwarming and horrible and satisfying all at the same time.

This movie shows many of the primal and tribal things that are part of the human past and present and the resourcefulness and ferocity that can arise in people chosen as victims.

It's left up to us to figure out what we just viewed. We don't even know whether the children are psychologically scarred for life by what's happened to them and what they've done as a consequence.

Thought-provoking on many levels, with a feeling of reality that hits home. History and even the daily news shows us that people are capable of things that seem improbable if not impossible. It's not hard to believe the premise of this movie.
39
Harvey 1950,  Unrated)
Harvey
Josephine Hull is the best. This one has to be seen over and over. Watch it closely, because it's more clever than it looks.
40
The Game 1997,  R)
The Game
I've seen this several times and it still interests me even though I know what's coming. Interesting concept, played well overall.
41
Tombstone 1993,  R)
Tombstone
The Earps. Val Kilmer really feels like he has tuberculosis. Good cast. Based loosely on a true story. I've watched this several times and will do so again.
42
Le Roi de coeur (King Of Hearts) 1966,  Unrated)
Le Roi de coeur (King Of Hearts)
Everyone should see this at least once. Especially good to watch when the world seems crazy. Too bad it's only an underground enjoyment.
43
Men in Black 1997,  PG-13)
Men in Black
Super secret organization oversees outer space beings who are visiting or living on Earth. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are the Men in Black. Linda Fiorentino doing her straight face thing. Very enjoyable.
44
Serial Mom 1994,  R)
Serial Mom
I've seen this several times and find it entertaining. I think it's one of the better John Waters movies. Kathleen Turner is terrific and the other main characters are played so well. This is not Roman Polanski or Orson Welles, it's from a different kind of mind.
45
The Cutting Edge 1992,  PG)
The Cutting Edge
The Odd Couple on ice skates. Naturally, they fall in love. There's Olympics gold, too. I like this one. Romance, athletics, gamesmanship, self-knowledge. Plausible story.
46
Practical Magic 1998,  PG-13)
Practical Magic
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are witch sisters in New England from a long line of witches. They're cursed when it comes to love. The curse strikes and they have to make things right again. Well-made, well acted.
47
Little Shop of Horrors 1986,  PG-13)
Little Shop of Horrors
Terrific music, with a seemingly happier ending than the original. The song "Skid Row" is powerful and who can deny "Suddenly Seymour" is a title to think about?
48
It Happened One Night 1934,  Unrated)
It Happened One Night
Still delightful. The guy and the girl get each other no matter what, or because of it.
49
Legally Blonde 2001,  PG-13)
Legally Blonde
This was just silly and old school comedy enough that I really enjoyed it. Repeatedly. Good performances by just about everybody in the cast. I appreciate Reese Witherspoon a lot.
50
The Last of the Mohicans 1992,  R)
The Last of the Mohicans
Movies should bring literature to life. This did a good job. The music and visuals were breathtaking.
51
Independence Day 1996,  PG-13)
Independence Day
I like this movie. Good for sci-fi and action fans. Terrific special effects. Earth invaded once again. Tall Will Smith and even taller Jeff Goldblum have a solution.
52
Pretty Woman 1990,  R)
Pretty Woman
Hector Elizondo was wonderful in this. The idea of the movie is completely unoriginal, but it comes off nicely. Worth at least one viewing. I've seen it several times.
53
Necessary Roughness 1991,  PG-13)
Necessary Roughness
Not a great movie, but one to watch if you like football...which I do. Old quarterback goes to college that's rebuilding its football team, falls in love with a prof, gives the team some pride. I've seen this several times and always enjoyed it.
54
Love Actually 2003,  R)
Love Actually
I watched this again and decided to rate it a bit higher. I guess I was feeling a bit critical when I rated it before. Not an example of great film making, but it definitely is a good example of a movie about relationships (ten couples). This is something I'll include in my short list of things to curl up with during holidays. Many heartwarming moments and opportunities for tears of joy. The idea that love is everywhere on the planet and that everyone has a story about relationships is a wonderful antidote to the seemingly endless torrent of hate and hopelessness we're inundated with daily.
55
Halloween 1978,  R)
Halloween
Do it Big Screen. TV screens are OK, but the larger perspective makes this chilling (did I see someone or something in the background?).
56
The Princess Diaries 2001,  G)
The Princess Diaries
For young people and the young at heart. Good performances in a familiar idea. A feel good film. U.S. girl finds out she's really a princess of another country and has to decide whether to accept the role.
57
The Hammer 2007,  R)
The Hammer
Low-key movie. I really liked Adam Carolla's character, a guy who never gives 100 percent, and has reaped the consequences of it. The character should have been immersed in angst over his lot in life, but wasn't. Warm, human, positive, this movie was a restorative for me. I recommend it.
58
Wasabi 2001,  R)
Wasabi
I love Jean Reno, so I probably rate this movie too high. It was violent, funny, and touching. The English of the Japanese girl was quite hard to understand (try subtitles if you have the same difficulty I had). Another ending where I got to water my cheeks.
59
Lake Placid 1999,  R)
Lake Placid
Big Snapper in a lake where it can't possibly be. Plenty of humor accompanying the scares. Better than the promo pics suggest.
60
The Whole Nine Yards 2000,  R)
The Whole Nine Yards
Amanda Peet was a lot of fun in this. She put in some nice touches.
61
Dante's Peak 1997,  PG-13)
Dante's Peak
Teeth clenching scenes, good special effects. Volcano stops being dormant, everybody runs. Like the volcano, the movie's quiet for awhile, then it's nonstop action.
62
Coneheads 1993,  PG)
Coneheads
Still fun to watch. Loads of comedic talent in an entertaining movie with points.
63
Joe Versus the Volcano 1990,  PG)
Joe Versus the Volcano
I didn't like this the first time I saw it. I've watched it several times now and I have to say I've grown fond of it. A guy with a horrible job is tricked into jumping into a volcano on an island where the chief is Abe Vigoda. Meg Ryan plays three different women. Dreamlike and touching.
64
They Call Me Trinity (Lo chiamavano Trinità) 1970,  G)
They Call Me Trinity (Lo chiamavano Trinità)
Silly, but very watchable. The Italian westerns are so overdone that they're fun.
65
Rudy 1993,  PG)
Rudy
Inspiring football film. Little guy gets respect and his fondest wish.
66
Tall Story 1960,  Unrated)
Tall Story
Basketball romance between two unlikely people. Jane Fonda the cheerleader, Anthony Perkins the jock.
